AE MGT 8.0 Brushless Conversion

Hi all, thought I'd start a thread of my ongoing MGT 8.0 conversion and story so far.

So here's my AE MGT 8.0, I've had this truck nearly 10 years now and I love it to bits.

I got back into the hobby a few months a go, ran the truck for a bit but the old 8.0 engine finally died so I put in a force 32:

Was running OK but after about 6 or 7 tanks of fuel I realise nitro just isn't for me anymore, too messy and too much effort and I want to just enjoy this truck properly.
Part of me just told me to buy a newer brushless model but i'm too attached to this truck to let it go and I love the design and layout of it, even if parts are rare to come by these days.

So I stripped it down and cleaned off years of nitro gunk:

I found a seller on eBay in Greece that makes some very nice motor mount/centre diff conversion kits so I bought one of them up. Solid machined aluminum, very nice quality!  Adjustable for any standard centre diff you can think of!

The seller also provided part numbers of drive shafts the correct length which was very helpful, here's everything that came so far:

I went for a hyper 7 diff as they're cheap, common, pretty strong and come with the 46t spur required to fit in the chassis.

Gone for a 16t pinion, just guessing atm no idea what size I will need.

Still waiting on my motor to arrive, gone for a Banggood special "X-team". No idea how good it's gonna be but its 4090 size and 1300kv so should have plenty of torque for my needs. Plan is to run on 6S (2 x 3S)

Also waiting on 2 generic battery trays from china.

I fitted the centre diff and mocked up the ESC, should just about be enough room!

Close! but fits very nicely:

Will update once my motor arrives. Can't wait to enjoy this truck on BL power!

So now I'm just waiting on the motor! Banggood say it's not in stock until the 20th so won't ship until then :(

Need to get 2 3S batteries as well but that'll just be turnigy's from Hobbyking

  • 3 weeks later...

Little update on the MGT, I waited a month for banggood to ship my motor then they said they won't have it in stock for another month!!!

So I cancelled that order and went over a few different ideas for motors, I've ended up ordering a leopard 4282 2000kv which will be here next week so pretty excited about that.

In the mean time my batteries have arrived, I'd never heard of the Zeee batteries before but did some research and they're decent by all accounts.

I would have went with my usual Turnigys but Hobbyking don't have a lot in stock atm so I couldn't!

These are 5200mah and 50c so should be plenty powerful for my needs, I will be soldering XT90 connectors on and making a series adapter.

Only £60 for the pair on amazon.

Snug fit!

Finally another update!!

My motor arrived today, a leopard 4282 2000kv:

Slightly bigger than an old 1515 I have (dead):

So I got to soldering on XT90s and building. All came together nicely!

So yeah all done, really happy with it!

However it is way over geared with the 17t pinion, not happy at all.  So I will be ordering a 14t then I can rip it properly and upload some vids :)

I reinstalled the front drive shaft after the pics don't worry lol, just needed to do some work on the front end.

It's finally working properly!

Had quite a few teething issues. Firstly the hyper 7 diff died instantly. The old big joes were VERY unbalanced and shaking it to pieces so I suspect that had a hand to play.

I have put a HPI trophy buggy flux diff in there now which should hopefully be stronger and hold up, and it actually fits better anyway. Plus can get hardened gears for that if it ever does die.

I have also gone down to a 13t pinion for now as it was getting warm seems good at the moment.

Here's a little vid, on temporary old truggy wheels I had laying around lol, until I get paid and buy some new proper MT wheels. Will get a proper vid when I take it somewhere on the weekend.

Can't wait to blast it properly on the weekend!
