Running time & Smoke

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Finally had the first run with my MT2 just wondering how long a full tank should last as I only got about 10mins if that?

There is also smoke coming from the heat sink on top of the engine so I'm guessing there is a leak? What would cause that a gaskett maybe?

Also the exhaust is very smoky pretty much all the time....I've tried making it run leaner but it doesn't seem to make any difference....my engine only has a single needle. Any advice?

What Burridge is getting at is some fuel brands tend to generate more smoke than others, making it harder to tune using the smoke trail. Optifuel RTR is an example of a smokey fuel. In this case you could either tune using a temp gun (if you have one), or the way I used to tune is to lean the high speed needle until the car runs at it's fastest then wind the needle out by approx 1/4 of a turn. This way, you should be on the richer (safer) side.

10 mins run time is about right but of course varies a lot depending on your driving style. Obviously the richer the tune, the shorter the run time. Smoke from the heatsink could indicate an overheating engine.

Ah I see.

Yes it's the optifuel RTR so I'm guessing that's normal then

I haven't got a temp gun so I'll give what you suggested a try. I'm guessing overheating the engine is a recipe for disaster.......is there a way of ensuring that I don't overheat it without a temp gun?

once its up and running , try the spit test , yep spit on the head and if its fizzes straight away its running really hot , i would get a temp gun for the furture , for the guys and girls who run nitro for years can tell its running lean of rich by sound and performance , over time your pick that up

i listen to the engine sound
Once i've got the sound i wanna hear and i've got some smoke = me happy
If i wanna double check - i'd throw a temp guage on it too
