Is there a sensor monitoring the motor temp? If not, what symptoms did the truck give that it was over temp?

Sounds like a few mods to the shell to reduce the chances of ripping it off.

The sensor is included I believe, you just need the bluetooth module

If there was no sensor.  then all i can assume is the ESC wasn't flashing to indicate overheating so he looked straight at the motor as the issue.

If that's the case, the motor must've been steaming!

So what happens? The motor gets hot, this causes the ESC to shutdown temporarily? Ala Hobbywing style? Sounds good if that's the case.

Explains why Traxxas have the motor heatsink fitted from new .

gearing up or bigger/heavier wheels may not be an option  on the stock leccy's ......a god old British winter will keep the temps though

It's a smooth can, probably cheap, so might run hot in a Pede, let alone this behemoth. Aftermarket motor mount and bang in a 1717. Sorted. (Well, it's got to be an improvement at least.)

I'm going to buy this:

And then hopefully I can use the app to monitor temps?

I've got this on the xo1 it's a good gadget and you link it a rpm sensor aswell, but if your worried about temps I would still use a temp gun

I zoomed in, definitely an E on the side, but I believe it's running 112S.

Well spotted!  I thought it might have been camouflage, like when 1:1 Manufacturers cover there new models in black and white stripes etc.

I did spot them testing the mk1 anti walk of shame feature that day, guess they improved it a little for the production models:
