Something different - Liam Doran DS3/Vorza

Recommended Posts

I recently caved an got back into RC when I saw a Vorza going for a decent price on ebay.  I'd wanted one for the speed when I was first playing with RC's again, but I couldn't justify the expense.  As most will know, it isn't that easy to resist when you see something though!

It was only when I searched on the MSUK forums for some other Vorza's that I found the Hobbytech DS3 shell on one in the "Show us you Buggy" thread.  It was almost as if I was supposed to own this car - because I was instantly reminded of this thread: http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/topic/163571-hobbytech-18-citroen-ds3-rally-body-shell/?hl=hobbytech

I think you can see where this is going!

So this is the plan:

Screen8.jpg

A lot of work will be needed - I can't get in touch with the bloke on here who did the previous conversion to find how he made his body mounts, but I am looking forward to this one.  If I can do it justice, I may even get it signed by Liam himself at the World Rallycross event at Lydden in May.

Here is the base and the shell roughly placed over it.

I had to source the shell from Spain as there are not many left about.  I can't screw it up!

And here are the wheels I chose.  Pretty impressed.  Asia tees are awesome!  Delivered in about a week and very cheap!

I hope this is not clogging up the board.  I think people can probably tell I am quite excited!

Gonna be flowing this mate. Always thought about doing a replica rally cross car

I got back into RC in the first place when I made this replica of my dad's old Rallycross mini!

About time I got round to updating this a bit.

Firstly the awesome stickers created by the awesome thestickeranddecalman.co.uk

11129897_10153264421919686_3345251852441

I tried spraying over these with flat clear to see if it would affect the vinyl  It didn't!

Shell fully cut

This started a a proper bodge to just offer the shell up, but I actually think it may provide a good way of velcroing the shell to get a decent finish with no holes/posts.  Still to be decided, although this looks terrible!

Masked the Union Jack for the roof.  Looks way off here due to **** lines and bad angle.  I think it looks okay in the flesh and it luckily has a distressed look in real life anyway!

I've had to quit for the night.  I need some 3mm masking tape for 'piping' the luminous green.  Maybe tomorrow!

Bit more done.  A few frustrations including a crack on one of the arches - god knows where that came from.  Also some of the masking has bled which is frustrating because I spent hours on it.

Still happy with it so far though.  Plenty more to do...

Tested the wheel stickers.

Thought I'd try some of this to mask off some of the gray on the sides.  Probably gone a bit overboard but I think it will look decent still.

Update time!  Gutted that I didn't get to this stage by last week when I went to the World Rallycross at Lydden, but I will try to get Liam's take on it on Twitter.  Pretty much finished now.  Take no notice of it sitting on the chassis - I still need to work out how best to do it.  If anybody knows how to get less (or even 'no') toe-in on the rear of a Vorza, I am all ears!

When it is all done I will be taking it out with the SLR to get some proper shots.

Once all the stickers were on it was time to mask off the outside so I could put the flat clear on it.

And here it is!  With the wing mirrors, air filter and spoiler on, and a very obvious Vorza underneath.  When I work out how to mount it, I will create a cover of some kind for the car underneath.

Garry ( the fellow that did the rep your wanted info on) , does pop into the forum now and again.

he is now a Photographer of motorsports , and is usually found at motorsport venues

clutching his trusty workhorse steed the camera while dodging the cars that forget how to corner fast.

Some ideas for mounting:

the side padding could be swapped out to something like slash or the likes side bumpers (rocksliders).

two bodyposts could be then inserted into each side slider/bumper and hold the body out away how you want.

top bonnet - rear roof deck mount points ( where its normally pegged and pinned)

we have a bit of a reach on this rear end to get to the body, so an extendable rear body mount peg system.

long rear body posts mounted to the rear shock tower ( most rc have this body mount system running from the rear towers on rc's)

front bonnet is the same a smaller shorter body mount post system is used and allows the body to be hung at the right level.

When finish you will have an 8 point body mount. 2 body posts on each side totaling 4 all in. then two up front on the bonnet/shock tower

and another two at the rear tower on the roof.

check out other vorza flux powered hpi, But in a monstertruck chassis base - truggy base. look at the shock towers and how they are fitted to the chassis.

also look and see if the chassis is a take off from the buggy, ( truggys tend to have a buggy like chassis same as trucks) so its then possible you could shoehorn a few mounts on

to get the body propped up at its height required.

Looks great fella!

A tip for the future if spraying the Matt clear coat on the outside - before removing the overspray film, run a craft knife around the windows and leave them covered in film. Spray your clear coat then remove the film from the windows. Saves all the masking you did!

Hope you figure out a way to get it mounted :)
