I'd go for a Hobbywing ESC over a SKYRC ESC I reckon.

 

HW's are sufficiently good QC that Modelsport stock them.

May well go for that one in that case, should definitely last me a good while.

My train of thought is, if it's brand new, there's no chance it's been abused, and it's got warranty too

Yes, but the thing is that ESCs are close tolerance devices, and they will sometimes let off that puff of magic smoke. It can happen with a cheap one or a good one. Having a warranty is a big plus though.

 

Not stressing your ESC's Caps by monitoring temps, having good batteries with a high C rating, adding a cap bank, and keeping power input cables short to avoid ripple current will all help take the load off your ESC.

It's a new club Mark but I'm sure some will have hi end stuff, but I'm on the Trackstar combo for the time being.

Cancelled the 10.5t Sky rc motor (not in stock anyway) and ordered the same combo as you, 8.5t motor, esc, and program box.

Got one pair or saddle packs sorted (for sale ad on here), just pinion/s and radio gear, might just go for another Flysky GT3b, cheap pretty good, to the point i've already got two of em lol

With an 8.5 I wouldn't go above 25t, this is track dependant of course. If you don't have a big track then start at 21t then work up or down.
