One more ST brushless conversion.

Recommended Posts

Fitted the 4076 2000kv yesterday with a 16t pinion I found and took it for a bash earlier. Its seems to run really nice now. I can feel the power and the speed on just 4s was very good.

Put some new badlands on that I've had for ages as well and the grip on gravel and grass is much better than the bawled standard tyres I was using.

It seems i have created some bananas today. Bent 3 drive shafts both centre front+rear and a dog bone. Bent a CVD as well. I was only running 4s with 16t pin :P

broke the rear chassis brace as well.

anyone know where i can get a cnc rear chassis brace? the rear braces seem to be hard to find compared to the fronts :( i have spare drive shafts, but not the centre drive shafts so i have to order both of those.

Unfortunate. Good mesh? No damage to spur ? Cheap eBay pinions?

rw pin from modelsport. not the best mesh, i think it was a little tighter than i would have liked, but i have to mesh the gears outside of the car because the radio box is in the way :( spur is fine :)

With the absima type mounts the servo mount is often in the way, awkward even when using a right angled allen key - I just whip the servo mount out - 3 or 4 screws, adjust mesh and replace.

  • 2 weeks later...

A cap blew up on my ESC on the last run so i am working on improving it. Also the heatsink keeps falling off and apparently cable ties and duct tape cant fix everything.

Old caps:

VRM's

IMG_20180620_223433_HDR.jpg

New Caps with 210uF more capacity each.

IMG_20180620_223411_HDR.jpg

IMG_20180620_223505_HDR.jpg

New heatsink mounts and i am using the bottom of the original case modified slightly to accept the larger screws.

IMG_20180621_195509.jpgIMG_20180621_195518.jpg

Just need to remount the fan and then its good to go again.

Also i have got a 48T spur which means with the 18T pin, the motor is right at the limit of the motor mount when properly meshed, so it is not possible for the motor to back off. The only issue is the bearing hub on the spur for the 48T pin is a totally different size from the 46T and 52T spur so i am going to have to go back to modelsport tomorrow and get one XD. I have also put 500K oil in the centre now so it should bleed even less power to the front than it was with the 100k oil i had before.

I think my next step i want to take is to do something with the suspension. The truggy is very heavy with my brick 7.2Ah 4s hardcase and the standard shock and spring tend to have a hard time keeping the front and rear ends up and on landings the chassis is slapping on the ground very hard. I am not sure whether i can go with some kind of 16mm+ big bore shock conversion or if stiffer spring and thicker oil would be better. I have never had a shock, shock bolt or tower break on me yet, so i dont want to put on shocks that are bigger but make the truggy less durable.

At this point my esc's are starting to become a meme.

I put some effort into making this better after it blew a cap the first time. I thought my heatsink mounting was pretty good and the new caps were better.

did a few passes on tarmac on 4s with the current clamp duck taped on :P

first runs i built up the power slowly until flat out. you can see just over 160A draw. I guess this will go up on grass which i might test on sunday when i have more time.

  IMG_20180628_173803.jpg

2 run was again 4s doing a rolling wheelie on tarmac uphill. i am guessing this is more of a burst current than a constant reading. the meter goes upto 400a and its a cheap £25 one from ebay, but i believe it to be fairly accurate and it seems constant enough.

destroyhyperst.exe was enabled once more. i'm pretty sure i enjoy breaking it more than driving it XD

Also i got a reading of the max amperage draw on grass building up the throttle slowly and it seem the max constant draw is 168A with the current motor and gearing. it was a pretty hot day on Sunday too and the motor did feel hot, but it didnt smell bad or instantly vaporize  my finger, so its good for now.

Oops - doing well though - ST's are tough old beasts.

yes. i bent the hinge pin, then bent it back again. then went for a triple backflip and didnt quite make it i think i might need to break out the 6s next time.

That's the trouble with cast aluminium. It's brittle.

You definitely need a CNC part

RW i think. i wouldnt touch anything made by traxxas with a barge poll :P

I have said CNC part now.  @Wrighty8766 hooked me up with CNC front+rear braces as well as a spare chassis with mud guards and that middle bit.  :)

It's a good job you have the YR twin fan unit in there the rate you're going

I think you'd fry without it by the sound of things.

I got around a 15+ Celsius drop in motor temps when I fitted mine.

Doing well so far :D

Yes the Yr heatsink and fan were a great investment. I would really like to water cool the motor as I am big into extreme cooling for my computers, but I am afraid it will just break and add complications which I don't want when I'm beating on it.

I would really like a motor mount and heatsink that was all one piece and had 4 bolt holes to keep the motor meshed correctly and 6 bolts to keep the centre diff and mount held down. I feel it would add strength to the chassis and hold the motor in place much better. I feel like 2 m3 screws at one end holding a motor with a decent size heatsink with fans on it isn't a robust solution even with thread locking the screws.

Lovely build!!

Excellent work.

Here is mine :)

Looks good. What motor have you got there?

I have ordered a 1700kv motor for mine now, I am considering getting 6s as one of my 4s packs is starting to get a bad cell, so I might end up making it a 3s. I think the 1700kv motor with my gearing will be a bit better on 6s.
