honedanny28
Hi i managed to fit a hobbyking 5025kv 25a combo to the ftx colt,u will need a seperate servo and mount, all quite a tight fit under the body, runs fine on 2s and 3s lipo temps were around 120f for motor and 95f esc after a good 20mins of runs in a car park, I originally put a 6100kv motor which was good on 2s but on 3s had lots of smoke from the motor after about 3mins! Renllek
Hi, i only took delivery of the car itself yesterday and can now see what you mean about there not being much room and the need for a new servo due to the 3 in 1 unit, any recomendations on the servo your used? Altho i have the new motor and ESC (they came yesterday too) im gunna hang fire on the U/G until i get used to the car a little. This is my first RC car as i dont count the one i had when i was about 10 (kids toy RC's went much cop 25 years ago!), so when i took it out for a quick blast in the back street lastnight i managed to break a front dogbone and front suspension hanger , will pick up some Alu dogbones from CML and a few hangers as they are cheap as chips. All in all tho i LOVE this litte thing, its so cute and my 2 year old loves it to, he just wants to chase it around, wasent interested in trying to make move with the transmitter. But no doubt that will come in time haha.
honedanny28
Cool yeh its not a bad little car for the money, ive broke front cvd too, quite pricey for replacement!the servo i used was this http://www.modelsport.co.uk/ripmax-mini-servo-jackal-husky/rc-car-products/379896 With this mount http://www.modelsport.co.uk/ripmax-dingo-servo-mount/rc-car-products/379916 Your soon want it to go faster! Renllek
Cheers for the links! Well i had it apart lastnight to have a look at this little 3in1 box so i work out how to wire up the brusless gear to it and i have a question for you, have you utilised this box or have you ripped it all out and stuck your own radio gear in there? This is what im leaning toward doing as it looks like it'll be less hassle to do it this way, now i just need to choose some radio gear , have also orderd some replacment bearings for it as the ones on mine are shot (i bought one of the ex demo colts from modelsport), some Alu rear dogbones and front cvd, and last of all picked up a carbon front shockmount for it. Cant wait until it all arrives, now i just need to find a good guide on building your own lipo battery pack, i have a few Sony US18650VTC4 18650 batteries. These are unreal, and the specs are pretty good. I use them in my PV's (e-cig) for sub-ohm coils, check the specs, and 2 of these in a pack will be smaller than the colts standard battery so should work out fine for the 25a hobbyking ESC Specs: Size: 18650 (18mm diameter / 65mm long) Type: Li-Mn Hybrid Rated Capacity: 2100mAh (High Drain) Nominal Voltage: 3.8V / Peak Voltage: 4.2V Maximum Rated Discharging Current: 30A Maximum Pulse Discharging Current: 60A Maximum Continuous Charging Current: 6.5A Nominal Voltage: 3.8V Maximum Charge Voltage: 4.2V Edited September 2, 2014 by Renllek
honedanny28
Yeh i used my own radio gear, just a hobbyking 3 channel, that 3 in 1 u cant use it for anything really, what combo did u go for in the end?nice little hop ups on their way then! I use similar batteries in my vamo v3,18650 panasonics was thinking of doing this too, will have to keep me posted on that!
Renllek
I havent purchased one yet just cant make my mind up, whether to get something cheap or spend a little and get something a bit better as i am planing to get an RC boat at some point and a bigger car, do quite like the look of the abisma CR3P on modelsport. Renllek
well i ordered the Absima CR2S V2 in the end, and found a tiny servo that should allow me to comfortably fit everything in, i should be getting it all on friday so will be able to give it a test at the weekend. Renllek
Did the upgrade and the car is now in a different league, and that still running on the standary NiMh battery. One thing i have found is that the servo that i have picked up is not quite up to the job, i went for the the smallest 1kg i could find and while it does turn the wheels it struggles after a few minutes running. however i did not need to go so small and have now ordered one of these as ther is still plenty of room for it http://www.modelsport.co.uk/savox-sh-0255-micro-size-digital-servo/rc-car-products/367262 its should be well up to the job. Another thing i have found is that now the car is so fast, even the smallest crash reminds you that standard parts are made of cheese. I have since broken the front left steering knuckle and upright, mind you i might not have lost control if id have had the new Alu front CVD's fitted but they still have not been delivered yet (damn you CLM/shopatron) so i disabled the FWD and running RWD only. Sooooo i have more hopups on the way, yes yes i know i could have spent the moneys on a better car in the first place (somthing like the Associated RC18T2/B2 1/18th Scale 4WD Team Kit) but you live and learn. new order has included replacemnt Alu steering knuckles and uprights, also front alu swing arms, altho i do not know what other things are gunna hamper my fun so i have bought a second colt for the trans parts as it would work out cheaper than buying them sepreatly. once i have it as robust as i require ill sort out the power requirements Watch this space
tank-uk
Hi all. I orderred my colt last night with a few of the carbon upgrades. if i am going to leave the standard motor etc in it ( due to my 10 year old wanting a go lol) what are the main parts i need to upgrade to stronger ones?
Renllek
well so far i have got alu front CVDs, alu front steering knuckles and uprights, carbon shock mount. basically anything upfont that would be suject to high stress during an impact I woulnt say that you would NEED to upgrade them but i would certainly recomend placing an order for some spare parts now, as it will take their time for shopatron to get them to you. i placed my order for the front CVD and carbon shock mount last sunday and i still dont have them. I have a feeling that no mater where you order them from they will be coming via shopatron, and if you do a google search on them they dont exactly have a good replutaion for delivery speed
tank-uk
awesome thanks for that mate. Looks like i will be on the modelsport parts page later then. Hopefully my daughter will love the buggy. She loves to have a go and hopefully if she likes this one i will get her her own one to use.
Renllek
Well finished my brushless U/G and thought id share the pics of the job, as you will see form the pics a little moding was required and it is also running on a 3s lipo that fits perfectly in The whole lot fits in so snug that there is no issues getting the body on. you can see the modification needed in this side shot; Wires tidied up; Wires moved outo the way so you can see the electronic positioning; 3s lipo sitting snug i would almost say that its too fast but the grin on my face everytime i take it out says otherwise, it impossible to pin the throttle from standstill as it just spins, pinning its from 1/4 throttle makes it flip. give it a good increase from 1/3 to full and its the otherside of our local supermarket carpark in less than second (a fare distance) and its twitchy as hell in the process! Guess i need to set the shocks up now but to be frank the standard ones are poo. dont really want to go for the Colt upgraded shocks as id like a little adjustability, so looking at other options. tank-uk
If you find any that will fit mate let me know. The standard ones on mine keep popping apart under strain. I was thinking of trying the losi mini 8 shocks to see if they fit?
Fiend
I did one of these Bit of a faff for various reasons but it's pretty nippy: I used the standard FTX Colt brushless ESC (can't take 3S alas), FTX Colt servo (still waiting for the sodding out-of-stock servo mounts), but spiced it up with a Hobbywing EZRun 7800kv motor.
