my sisters car got driven into and it was said to be a insurance loss cat c

so insurance companies messed about liek they do then 2 months later came to the conclusion that theyd pay out and give her the car for free

so she gave me the car

she got loads of letter explaining stuff and that if she didnt want the car to send the docs away to the other persons insurance company

so i just wanted to know how do / who notifies the dvla that a car has been written off ?

cheers

Andy

As above mate, You will need to also inform the dvla that the vehicle is off the road for tax reasons and just to make sure the insurers are doing their job. **Talking from previous experience** If your thinking of fixing the car it will need to be check by VOSA and have to have a fresh mot to ensure its fit to be on the road as the old one will be void. What sort of damage has it got. If its gunnarequire jigging, I wouldn't bother to be honest as once a car is bent its weak and it basically a deathtrap

can you still re register write off's under a designated plate (it used to be a prefix Q i think) once repaired?

i think there was some procedure and check or something....mind you the end result was still a car worth about 3 empty crisp packets if you did it......

as far as i under stand it needs to have a current MOT to be able to be taken for a VIC test which is were they check the vin numbers the dvla is then notified that it passed and then i can re apply for the documents

but its been over 2 months now and its still not recorded as anything

does the old "q" plate thing still exist?

yes, when I did my reg. transfer, I found out that you cannot put a cherished plate on a Q prefix - not sure why as its not hiding the history of the car.

Edit:

Q prefix DVLA numberplates are assigned to any vehicle of which the age or origins are uncertain e.g. kit conversion vehicles which are built of major components from more than one donor vehicle, or imported vehicles where the date of first registration cannot be established. These plates are not transferable to other vehicles, even if they already carry Q prefixed DVLA plates.

i suppose the issue with this corsa is that it is low value to begin with which is why written off. i had a bump in my old corsa, just a light smashed and a crease in my tailgate. I bagged a peak at the invoice that went to the insurance (not mine) and vardy charged £1600 for it.

My old escort had a front end...needed a bonnet and a bumper. talked to a bloke i know who said he cold do it for 300 for me but if it went through the insurance it would be about 800 the invoice he would put in.
