Clutch Tools - Spring or Generic Type..?

Hi All,

Q1

Will be embarking on taking apart/putting clutch shoes back (Hyper 7 clutch is original!), and wondering if the spring tools, such as the HPI Clutch Shoe Spring Tool or EDS Racing Products Buggy Clutch Spring Tool are better than the generic/Special Clutch Tool? Have read that the generic tool can snap.

Q2

The clutch shoes on an engine bought off ebay have a mix of black and gold springs, which I don’t think is right, based on the gold being a differing tension? The engine has never been run, and no markings on the inside of the clutch bell.

Also the springs don’t line up with the groove andlook as though they will rub on/touch the clutch bell by the looks of it. I guess I’m better off buying new shoes and springs – is https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/answer-rc-3-shoe-clutch-high-bite-low-wear-clutch-w-3pks-springs-422932 better/more preferable to the fastrax ones? https://wheelspinmodels.co.uk/i/72647/. I’m assuming it’s got the fastrax blue shoes currently (albeit gouged).

Cheers!

I never bothered with aspecial tool to wrangle clutch shoes into position. It's fiddly..sure...but I never had a tool....and just got hte job done.

Nice as I sure the EDS tool is, its a fair chunk of money for a tool you may only ever use a couple of times. I'd try a cheap one first and see how you get on

Yeah .. it's a fun job for sure. You could wrap some tape around the outside edge of the flywheel and grip it with a pair of mole-grips. I never had much of a problem with it turning.

Just make 100% sure you are fitting the shoes the right way round. It's not a job I love so much I would want to do it twice......
