I usually get mine off ebay.

Either new or new unopened. Never had trouble with use however if withing last 4-6 years dated.

WD all the way. Black or purple.

 

I've a 2015 6tb purple in a media player. On nearly 24/7.

 

(reds tend to be 5400) great for storing media though.
