SeagullMan
Had my 30dnt a week and cannot for the life of me get it started, replaced spark plug, tried with air filter out, disconnected kill switch and still nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated
Bajadre
have you reset the carb settings buddy? is the plug getting wet?
SeagullMan
yes, reset the carb to what it says in manual, plug is just damp, I left eh plug out overnight just incase it was flooded and then cranked it a bit this morning with it out, still won't start
Mack1
Check for a spark, see if you can rule that out as a problem.
SeagullMan
spark is fine
Mack1
When you say you had it a week is it brand new or second hand?
SeagullMan
it's brand new
Mack1
So pretty much rules a worn out engine. Assuming you have fuel pressure and fuel going to the carb, a decent spark I can think only of 3 things 1st, it is still flooded. My favourite is to close off both needles and turn the engine over for a couple of minutes to expell unwanted fuel. Other people remove the carb altogether, I think its just personal preference. 2nd are you using the choke correctly? And 3rd an air leak. Check for oil seeping out from the base of the barrel (the head bolts do come loose from time to time) or leaking around the carb.
SeagullMan
I have just closed both needles and turned it over for about 2 mins, still no sign of life, it doesn't sound like its even trying to start, there is a slight leak onto the battery box from where the exhaust joins the manifold but I doubt that would make a difference? Mack1
Agree with you on the exhaust leak. Could you put about a teaspoon of petrol down the spark plug hole and see if it will at least try to fire up?
SeagullMan
i've tried that, also tried startup fluid, no luck
Mack1
Are you getting compression? You should be able to feel it if you pull slowly on the pull starter. It should try to lift the car up off the ground. If there is little to no compression it will be really easy to use the pull starter. SeagullMan
oh, theres compression, it feels quite clunky like it comes up in stages ( the pull start) not smooth
Mack1
Just on the off chance then is the throttle butterfly slightly open to allow air into the mix and the choke butterfly, when cold shut for the first couple of pulls then fully open to start the engine? SeagullMan
Throttle butterfly has a slight gap at the bottom for air it seems and I've tried to start with choke on and off but no luck, also tried it with throttle open a bit more
Mack1
Literally then the only thing I can think of is an air leak somewhere. I know from when I had this problem I had a blown head gasket. Maybe try and tighten everything up a bit. Maybe things have settled in a bit during running it in?
SeagullMan
it's never been ran in hah, it's first time trying to start the damn thing
SeagullMan
i've ran my finger underneath the carb and there seems to be some oil there, not enough to be dripping onto chassis, could this be the issue?
Mack1
Just reread your first post again, has it ever been started? It could be how you are starting it. What process are you going through?
SeagullMan
bulb primed, receiver/transmitter on, choke in down position until it tries to start and then horizontal but it never even sounds like its about to start
Mack1
Yes that's the correct procedure. It's a long shot you could take the carb off and check that the gasket is the correct way around as it has a small hole in it that should align with the pulse holes in the carb and manifold. You can remove the carb and it will still start and run for 1 - 3 seconds if you put some fuel down the plug hole. if all you said above is true and you haven't over looked anything then it could be the plug breaking down under compression (I have seen this a few times in the past) or it could be the ignition timing. SeagullMan
So replace the spark plug again?
hamradioguy
I wouldn't go out and buy a new plug as it's not been proven to be the problem but it would be good to try another in it.
