Popular Post NITO Posted December 31, 2017 Popular Post Share Posted December 31, 2017 (edited) Hello everyone, Santa brought me an RC courtesy of the Mrs. as is xmas tradition. This year it was a G6-01Konghead. It’s hasn’t been my favourite Tamiya build, quite messy with grease required for so many steps and some fiddly bits and pieces, seemed to take ages to build although looking back it was maybe about 4 hours for the chassis to completion. I then spent some further time messing about programming the transmitter and no doubt the shell will take at least double that at least! The shocks are basic like the WT01’s, easy to build but dissatisfying end result however the gearbox internals on the other hand are very interesting with a healthy appetite for bearings!! 4300KV 9T Brushless motor fitted on this example, and 4ws option is installed... I’ve only tried it indoors so far, the end result is I have to say, very cool. I like the 4WS option and its great that the parts required are included (sort of makes the lack of esc easier to swallow -not that the Tamiya one is much of a loss anyway) I have configured the 4WS with my Futaba 10J so that it is switchable with dual rates on the rear. Savox matching servos...the 10J Futaba radio allows me to have these on seperate channels with programmable mixing and have same steer, opposite steer and dual rates. I’ve also needed to adjust the end points as the front pulls the servo and bracket so I’ve restricted the EPA’s to prevent any binding or over stressing, the rear wheels can catch the middle wheels at full throw also, so again the EPA’s are knocked down to control this taking balooning into account. The dual rate is set as 50% of the configured full rate on the rear. It’s fantastic having this level of control through the radio. Waterproof ESC and receiver enclosed in a water resistant enclosure...note that I’ve deviated from the suggested mounting points for these items... That concludes the chassis, my full spec is; Stock Konghead+ Futaba 6ch receiver Tamiya sealed receiver box from TT02 Savox metal geared servos front and rear HPI Waterproof ESC HPI 4300kv Brushless Motor Rubber sealed bearings to hubs and steering arms and Metal shielded to gearbox Spiral wrap for wiring tidy up and velcro for ESC mounting. The setup allows the battery cover to hinge and doesn’t effect its operation. I’m really looking forward to trying this outside but I have a plan for the shell paint scheme and it won’t be a ten minute job so that may take a little time. The ESC is all programmed and its raring to go. However I disabled the crab steer option as I found that it simply dragged the middle wheels sideways. The ability to switch on the fly between 4WS for slow driving with a focus on maneuverability and 2WS for speedier driving is very useful though. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You’re not wrong XV, I left the crab steer option configured still, the only time I think it could be useful is in a high speed run situation, although it drags the middle wheels, it seems to maintain stability better but my testing has been limited so far. The dual rate on the rear opposite steer seems a good option to have. I’m currently running the 18T stock pinion at the moment as I forgot to order a steel one. I do have a steel 20T in the box but I’ll see how the 18T goes first before deciding on which one to have installed. I plan to do a little vid showing the turning circle difference with the 4WS, even with the reduced EPA over stock that Injave set up. It could be tighter stil but I didn’t like the strain on the servo bracket. I do have a metal servo bracket I got for the GF01, I need to check if it’s the same setup but that could possibly help and allow me to restore the tighter steering. That said, I know some have suffered with grip roll so it may be better to leave as is! After the neat install, one thing I forgot to add was LED’s of which I have some in stock, would quite like some on this I think. I have a slightly ambitious plan for the paintwork, not sure yet how that will pan out but I’m looking forward to the ‘intended’ outcome!
