17t is acceleration 23t is top speed, but it's more about torque and motor temps, I'd say you would be running much more efficiently on the motor setup you've quoted with a 23T

Alright so congrats to me! I just broken 3 teeth of the stock spur gear :D I should probably change it as soon as possible and not run a lot with it :P The thing is i want to try out different things with the gearing and make it less fast and more powerful for climbing etc. Besides the 17t pinion gear that is probably needed which spur gear would you suggest? Also, go for a plastic one or a metal one? Has anyone tried below 17t pinion gears? I know it's not supposed to go below 17 but why?? :P

 The only way to run different pinion gears other than 17t and 23t would be to have a custom mate motor mount made up to either reposition the motor accordingly or be adjustable so it can be adjusted accordingly, I did think about it but there is honestly no point 17T on the right motor/esc/battery setup will give you what ever you need from the outlaw, High turn motors give great controllable tourqe for climbing ect and are not to fast, a good sensored brushless setup on a crawler specific esc and 3s for good power also gives a good and most of all smooth crawling setup giving you option of drag brake/and it can raise and lower the % of power given to the motor ect so you really can tune them more on the esc and motor choice than the pinion I think the 17t and 23t are good enough to get you setup for whatever you have planned although more option would be nice you don't really need them

I see. Fair enough then :P What about the spur gear? Do you think one with more teeth than the stock one can be placed?

 It's is "Possible" but if you change the size/amount of the th then you have to change the pinion also to match as above the motor mount is t adjustable so you wouldn't be able to take up the gap that will be left or the opposite you won't be able to move the motor away to get the clearance for a bigger spur, If your going to do anything with the spur your best bet is to either have custom made or spend many hours online and cross reference a metal spur of the s!e size/teeth as the outlaw one that is a direct replacement for the stock plastic one or at least a easy mod to be adapted into the outlaw.

 

(p.s I am actually looking myself at the moment also for a metal spur from a different model to adapt into the outlaw)

I was thinking about trying the 17t pinion gear and the 64t pinion gear that the Yeti and the Bomber use. That was i should be able to achieve more torque and less speed which is what i'm after right now. In fact the Yeti uses a 16t pinion and a 64t spur so the 17t pinion is pretty close. Have you read those two articles of Axial (http://www.axialracing.com/blog_posts/1073910694 and http://www.axialracing.com/blog_posts/1073921336)? This line "Again, bigger pinion, more speed. Smaller spur, more speed." explains it all i think :P It basically means that if we use a smaller pinion and a bigger spur we will achieve less speed and more torque. I still don't understand why can't we fit a 16t pinion in there or something smaller. Could it be because of the motor's shaft? Because the mount isn't even the same diameter as the gear.

I've got Spurs from 12t right upto about 50t but you can fit anything other than the 17T or the 23t as there are only two pre drilled motor mounts avalible to cater for these spur gears, I think your getting a little confused and need to pull the motor out to understand the issue.

Hm yes i think i'm getting a little confused over the gearing now :P Still an amateur on that department i'm afraid xD So the only pinion gears i can put in are the 17t and the 23t because of the pre drilled motor mounts right? But as far as spur gears go, i can fit in bigger or smaller than the stock 62t right?

First bit yh but second bit no,

 

Right so FTX Make two motor mounts one for a 17T pinion and one for a 23t pinion.

 

you aren't able to change the spur at all as it's the spur and pinion gear that mesh to feather to give you drive so say for instance you put a smaller than stock spur gear in then the motor would need to be adjusted (which we can't do) to bring the pinion back into contact with the sour..

 

see this pic that's the spur and pinion if either one of them changes size adjustments need to be made to bring the gear back together...

Also note in this pic the motor

mount has that big slot in to allow you to "swing" the motor back and forth to allow different pinions and spurs to be used, we don't have a slot we just have 2 fixed mounting holes seen here...

^^^ Thy is one of the FTX Motor mounts, Not the two round holes are wher the motor is bolted up so there is no adjustment.

I think i get it now :D So we are basically stuck with the 62t spurs but we can change between 17t and 23t pinions. That kinda sucks :( I suppose adjustments in the pinion gear to blend in with a bigger or smaller spur are not that easy to make :P

Haha :P I basically wanna make the Outlaw have less speed and more torque in order to be able to crawl better. I've compared it with the Yeti which has different gearing and the yeti seems to crawl smoother. Of course this is also because of the locked rear diff ;)

 Try a high turn Motor like 55t or 65t
