FTX Outback Ford F100 (was Land Cruiser)

Arrived today.

 

Yes it's an inexpensive scaler / crawler but actually rather good for the money. Body is fairly well detailed Land it does look the part. Components are what I'd call OK quality. Not great but good enough to actually allow it to crawl properly without doing any mods. Tyres are fairly soft with reasonable grip. I'm intending to keep it stock for now as I want to see how this cheap and cheerfull crawler holds up.

 

Only problem with it initially is that a screw was missing from the front suspension but found it in the bottom of the box. So as per normal with any new RC check that all screws and bolts are present and correct.

Brief test of the Land Cruiser. Does run rather well I have to say. Left front wheel tends to rub occasionally as the suspension on that corner doesn't always return to normal right away. Shock maybe?

I'd say the shock is at fault, the FP rig doesn't suffer that issue...

 

Good, aren't they? Nice turn of speed and reasonably capable.

Remove shocks and check oil levels I think.  Faster than I expected with a little 370 in it. Did notice the motor got hot but not too hot though. Might fit a heat sink.

For the money I reckon there a bloody great way to get into the crawler/scaler scene tbh it just shows how over priced the new rtr crawlers from axial and alike are. Needless to say I've ordered mine today

Lipo battery

 

Found that a Nanotech 2200mah 2s LiPo is a perfect fit. Now just have to sort out a battery plug adaptor.

The Outback is a 250mm wheelbase so you'd have to lengthen the wheelbase with new links and drive-shafts. Kamtec's Bowler shell is about right though at 257mm wheelbase.

Nice. I have thought about getting one of these, but have enough stuff to play with.

 

The shock not returning properly, could that be torque twist as well?

Doesn't happen in a straight line. Only when going over something that pushes the wheel up or a sharp turn and the car stays tilted over until a change of direction. Will remove the shocks and put new oil in them and make sure they're all working smoothly.

Very uncrawler like.....that tiny can has some poke, surprising poke!

Few little things done this morning.

 

Removed the shocks. All had the correct level of oil albeit very lightweight. Refilled with 45 wt oil and suspension feels much better. Controlled but still soft. Pic shows size of shock compared to a standard 1/10 85mm alloy shock. Also threadlocked some of the suspension screws.

Wheel wideners are fitted as stock

 

 

Raised the body mounts by one hole all round and moved the front bumper one mounting hole further out as well. Just that bit more tyre clearance now. Got rid of those stickers on the doors as well.

Those stickers really didn't want to come off. Very strong adhesive !!!

Looking good there, and for the price tag it's a real bargain. I've never really looked into crawlers, but I'm tempted with one of these, particularly the Ranger..
