Well its doing it again... ffs
The old Castle ESC died a cogging death (overheating within 1minute)

So i got a new ESC
Hobbyking Xcar 120A Esc

Been fine for about 4 runs
Went for a run today - and it was great for 5mins, then suddenly, no power, and coggy start....

Loss of brakes and suddenly no reverse....

So the info
Hyperion 3s 4000mah, 25c
Traxxas Veloine 3500KVH motor
Hobbyking 120A X-car esc
4mm Bullets
Traxxas connector

Car powers up fine - Fan nice and fast - Steering okay...

(Video coming - Photobucket been slow to upload)

cogging issues will be a rubbish lipo  or faulty motor or ESC.  But as i said before a bad motor will destroy the ESC

100A constant pack for a 120a esc??

Oh, and hobbyking esc's are a bit crap, in my experience.

I thought Hobbyking was alright lol maybe not?
100A maxed motor with a 120A Constant ESC (480Amp Burst)

The esc in thoery shudda been perfectly happy with it....

But the Suspect ""bad motor"" Ran perfectly fine for 5 1/2 packs
If it was "bad" it'd be from the word go

maybe the lipo is the issue? could be - but again why would appear to be faulty after 5 1/2 packs from last one?

Eitherway - confirmed dead esc, losi motor's replicating same fault....

If the motor is pulling 100a max, then a lipo that gives 100c constant is not adequate, as there is no head room allowance.

A 120a esc should have a battery attached giving 140a constant, so as never to be working at full capacity.

Specs say it handles a 2-3s lipo so you're on the limit there. My guess is you've also got it geared high so you're on the limit with amps and voltage. No wonder it poofs. How hot does that battery get? As Noj said, you should be over the esc by at least 20% ie 4000mah 35c = 140 amps so esc isn't stressing it.

Dump the xcar and get a Hobbywing 4s sc8 and be done with it. At least then you won't be on the voltage limit.

Battery runs pretty cool tbh...

What temp? I've got my system running so the battery peaks at 45 celcius, motor 70, esc 50. That's as far as I'm willing to push. Been like that for a long time.

My gut feeling is the 2-3s escs are not really liking 3s even tho the specs say yes. If you can fit it in I think you should try a 4s Hobbywing SC8 or similar. The SC8 is prob around the smallest footprint in terms of a 4s 120A capable esc.

Unless someone else knows a smaller one.

The SC8 states that with a 3s lipo attached motor kv should be below 4000kv so it will run your 3500 on 3s easy

Now reading the specs of the SC8 I'm thinking the smaller 2-3s types may only be able to handle 3000kv ish with 3s which could be the problem. At or over the limit on volts and KV.

I just spotted the Hobbywing Max 10

well im putting the Traxxas motor on shelf for a short while - and gonna run with the donor Losi 4700kvh, just because of the fact - its looking like the motor could be killing everything

Why cant castle max the mamba max again - it was a cracking ESC
