I'm sure these questions have been asked before.. 

 

What are people's thoughts on these?

I'm looking for a bashing buggy probably 2 wheel drive and brushless. 

 

I'm happy to build up a kit but don't want to spend loads of cash. 

 

Could you recommend an alternative?

An expensive hiding to nothing. Whatever you buy, ensure it is not that.

 

I cannot offer a suitable alternative suggestion, other than than not buying the Acme.
