Drilling into crank shaft - bad idea?

Recommended Posts

I've got a crank shaft but it's a bump start version and I want to convert it to pull start, but there is no hole in the end for the pin of the pull starter to locate. So I want to drill a small hole in the crank part. I will use a pillar drill to get it straight.

Any advice on metal drilling or should I leave it alone?

Considering the revs these spin at, accuracy would be my first concern. Even with a pillar drill

My next concern would be the hardness of the metal...and what drillbit

Lastly would be the issue of crankshaft balance.

Personally...I'd leave it alone. Depends if you can afford to get it wrong

Id leave it alone. Drilling it out will upset the balance. But then again its only a single cylinder so it may not effect it that much but it does let go at 30000rpm its gonna be messy for a little engine
