Battery query

Recommended Posts

use your charger and put them into storage mode.

a 3s battery would be kept at around 11.1v

a 2s lipo battery would have a storage charge of 7.4v

a 1s lipo would be 3.7v

these above are the most common batterys you will encounter with flying to start with.

what we do is this, fill our battery and have a good time flying. when the battery auto shuts down ( the speed controller  does this and cuts power to motor)

we know the battery is fairly empty. when we get home we will recharge the battery to 7.4v , its what we call a storage charge. its neither full to the brim or down right empty.

its a midway point where the battery is most stable .

A battery stored at its storage voltage should be check every week or couple, you want that battery to stay at 7.4v

but a battery stored like this can last a lifetime as long as its topped up when the battery leaks power . ( all batterys leak power/charge left long enough they drain fully , old nicad-nimh batterys did this even more so)

hope this helps buckshot and expalins the need to keep an eye on battery when in storage for best results and safety

My charger does not have a storage mode, what can i do mr cowboy.

well it is not a problem as much, but we have to be careful and measure the voltage.

we charge our battery fully up and pop it back into our car.

we then drive around ( not crazy just a general pottering around) our aim is to use some of the charge in the battery

so the batterys voltage drops to a required level.

it is a bit more hassle but its a safe way to draw power from the battery slowly

we also require a new device ( not have to but a very good idea to have one) they are not expensive and worth every penny.

your going to need a lipo voltage checker/alarm.

using a voltage alarm/checker, we can set it to sound a warning when our battery cells reach a certain voltage ( mine is set to 3.7v )

so if any battery cell in the pack reaches 3.7v the alarm wails a warning.

at the same time with a slight glance you can see how much voltage is in the whole battery and in each battery cell ( lipos like a 2s or 3s have more than one cell, a 2s has 2x cells / and a big 3s has 3x cells in it)

you can find these devices in model stores - ebay - amazon - banggood and the likes, cheap but nearly all members have something like this to help them in the field or at the track
