And using some copper bushings in order to rise up the battery tray so I could keep the side guards:

Cheers for these, very helpful.

That motor mount is for a Hyper 8 I see, is the battery tray and the tray mount part of a Hyper 8 conversion kit too?

sorry if this has already been covered here or elsewhere but i need some help.  Hyper ST Pro conversion to start with we fitted a hobbywing 150a 2000kv combo, for reasons still unknown it burst into flames after 5mins.... so moving on we have now purchased a mmm combo with 2200kv motor new from castle and want to be sure that we are doing this right. 52T (stock spider diff spur) and 16t pinion running it on 5s is this a recipe for disaster?

Sounds good to me, but 5s might be a little quick. Maybe start with 4s. Just make sure the batteries are at least 5000mAh and 30C+

You sure them diffs are all nice and smooth? Right gearing and all that? When I say gearing I mean diff gearing. I run 14T with 52T and it's perfect , motor is quite cool I could go up a couple of tooths easily

Whoop, paid for the motor mount and battery tray with mount today from Vr5fx (many thanks Steve)

Finally taking my first steps into the world of brushless.

Time to strip it down and get selling bits now

Looking good there mate, jeez it looks bare with just the leccys in!!

So I have been reading up on my brushless tech and I understand that I need an ESC with a high enough ampage to cope with what the maximum the motor can pull.

I am looking for around 1900KV and I am still unsure whether I need sensored or sensorless, any ideas?

Also, batteries, I understand the mah rating and the power but what is the 'c' rating? ie 25c batteries?

And...what is an EDF motor?

Only worry about going sensored if your into racing. If it is bashing sensorless is fine.

For the batteries, the C rating is the discharge, or amount of "punch" the pack has.

The C rating works with the mAh for the amount of amps it can supply.

As an example, a 5000mAh 25c rating battery can put out 125a (5 x 25).

An EDF fan is a Electronic Ducted Fan, no good for us.

This is the speed controller I use, as do a lot of other peeps.

I just put a HPI Tork 2200 motor in my ST, not tried it yet.

Cheers Steve.

Cleared a couple of bits up for me there.

So what is the general consensus regarding c rating then, what do people use with the ST which provides a good balance of punch and run time?

I am trying to do this conversion on abit of a budget at the moment as it took all my time getting the other half to be OK with me doing it so I have looked at a couple more Hobbyking 150a combos and wondered what peoples thoughts are.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__39663__Hobbyking_X_Car_Brushless_Power_System_2150KV_150A.html - not to sure on this one yet as it only goes up to 4 cells and I think I would like the freedom to be able to try 6 cells if I fancied it.

I'm hoping to twist your arm to steer away from hobbyking, I blew two of my Turnigy ESCs in a space of 2 weeks, but that was probably down to how I treat my cars. :whistling:

But if I was forced to buy one, at say gunpoint, I would pick this one. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__39817__Turnigy_8th_5th_Scale_Car_Brushless_Power_System_2000KV_150A.html

Keep in mind, you will get punished with import, as only the US warehouse stock that combo.

Batteries will be the next sting, personally run 2 packs in series. Reason for this is that if a cell goes bad, or gets damaged you will lose less.

Say a cell goes bad in a 4s pack, people will say to dispose of it, so 3 good cells go with it, unlike a 2s, where you will lose only 1 good cell.

If you get 4 of these, it will give you 2 runs. around 15-20 minutes steady bashing

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__31930__Turnigy_5000mAh_2S_40C_Lipo_Pack_UK_Warehouse_.html

Then later down the line if you wanted more speed you can get 1 or 2 of these and mix it up

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__26737__Turnigy_5000mAh_3S_40C_Lipo_Pack_UK_Warehouse_.html

You can put one of each of these batteries in series, 2s + 3s for 5s.

Must have

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__42953__Hobbyking_2_8S_Cell_Checker_with_Low_Voltage_Alarm_UK_Warehouse_.html

Then pick up an ammo box or similar to store you LiPo packs.

had my fingers burned (literally) with hobbywing recently on an esc when it burst into flames 2 days old, needles to say i used the refund to go towards a castle setup. In my opinion spend the money in the first place and your less likely to spend it 3 times over when it goes wrong.

I would get a Hobbywing (not hobbyking, dont get them confused) 150a esc. Takes 4-6s lipo, Loads of people run them. Motors from Hobbyking are ok, the red can Turnigy ones, but ESC's can be abit naff.

Well I have a motor mount and battery mount sorted, have also got a motor and ESC sorted but I won't be getting them til the back end of next week - got this motor in 1950kv flavour - http://www.modelsport.co.uk/orion-vortex-bls-vortex-mr8-1950kv-4-poles/rc-car-products/40323 and this ESC - http://www.modelsport.co.uk/orion-vortex-r8-pro-bls-esc-180a-2-6s-/rc-car-products/365665

This combo will be OK I assume?

How and where does everybody mount the ESC?

What batteries should I be looking at buying? Ill be buying some 2s and some 3s so I can run 4/5/6s if required but which C rating do I buy?
