Andy20xe
Any body have any ideas of any way of converting an ion mt to use a hex type wheel ?
jtheg
You eill need to get outdrives with a pin type fitting, losi mini t or rc18. But getting the buggers to fit tidy is a pain!! Once you get to pins then you can go to hex's with an adapter. Or get a clamp style hex adapter, hard to find though for that size. What size hex do you want to go to?? 12mm?? thesnake505
Can you fit mini recon axles? In place of the ion ones! Then although no hex you will at least have loads of options for wheels! Jtheg can you measure your drive shaft and ill measure a recon one and then we can compare!
jtheg
I'll get some pics and measurements.
Critch
I think we should start a Ion upgrade stickie thread

thesnake505
so here are the pictures as promised, it will be interesting to compare to an ion. I have been tempted by an ion my self as an in the boot car run it on nimhs, so I can have always charged batteries large bearing small bearing shaft diameter for wheel/hex to fit on overall length small lip, large bearing sits against this amount sticking out after assembly
jtheg
I'll try and put them in the same order: Large bearing: Small bearing Shaft diameter Overall length Little lip Amount sticking out Dogbone length pin to pin diameter skinny bit length of pin Edited May 27, 2013 by jtheg
thesnake505
So recon ones are longer! I recon it will still do the trick! Might be worth trying a recon one in an ion! Jtheg do you want to send me your address ill pop one in the post I have a few spare! Also ill measure the dog bone later to compare
jtheg
Pm on way mate
jtheg
here we go recon axles on the ion: They do fit dogbones are a bit tight because the slot for the pin is a bit shallower, could be cut out though!!
thesnake505
So that means that with recon axles and pin's all rc18t wheels will fit!
jtheg
Nope, tried that before they hit the hubs! Wrong offset. Edited June 6, 2013 by jtheg
jtheg
But you could go to 12mm hex using delrin adapters for the rc18 (from the toyz) then use touring car wheels. They are the same hight and width as stock:D

Greenshot
I have proceed to the same modification. Original ion axles are just good for poor brushed... Thanks again jtheg!
-Rune
Jtheg: Thanks for the tip and advice in this post, just what I was looking for Did you do any changes when you mount them? see you write that they are a bit narrow, but it is possible to use them? Are you using the original axles or Mini Recon?

bosq
I've done the same mod. With only small difference - I used standard axles - jest drilled in them 1,5mm hole in the end of flat surface. The drilling was not easy, as the material is a bit hardened (but not too much - its possible to drill in it in standard way). Now I'd say it gives +300% to stability and +200% to offroad traction. +it gives some speed as wheels are a little bit bigger . One of the best modifications (with BL modded setup of course - I doubt stock would handle this) P.S> Remember to glue tires to the rims Edited March 1, 2015 by bosq
-Rune
Hi bosq! I do not know if I understood you rightly, but you drilled in the center of the drive shaft to use original axles? Some pictures you can show us? Running with 7900kv, 2s lipo but with original wheels. Has not been time to rebuild axles yet, but maybe I should have it done now if one can use original axles, for those I have in alu.
