Sometimes buying a new toy causes more cost than anticipated.....

Big tanks require suitable transporters....I give you the humble Ford Escort 55 1.8D van, in white, with steel wheels, no abs, turbo, central locking or electric windows and mirrors....

What it does have is Tank capacity, power steering, working CD player (lol), 67k on the clock, half a tank of diesel, FSH, four good tyres, new belts 10k ago, fresh alternator, battery and a clean MOT.....All for £900. Sat happily at 70mph on the way back up the A1 yesterday, heater works hot and cold, chuffed to bits I am :good:

The (04 plate) Bimmer set me back nigh on £600 yesterday and requires more work on Monday (all brake pipes corroded) with just over 70k on the clock.......:crying:

Goes to show that they don't make 'em like they used to!

Is that an Ateca @Bigjimknickers ? How you finding it?

It is mate, an 2017 seat ateca, SE Technology 1.6 Tdi ecomotive.

what a mouthful!

we are loving it, the kids love it compared to the MK5 Gti we had before, loads of room lots of toys.

excellent economy (compared to the 20mpg Gti!) all in all they are well worth a look & cheaper than a Tiguan, I honestly thought it wouldn't be much bigger than the golf (same sort of floorplan) but I was wrong.

Acceleration is pedestrian, about 110 horses down on the bimmer.....Overtaking requires some planning, for sho....

All part of the van's charms, long as it hauls rigs around, all is good.....

Cheers fella, getting my independent to sort it, which is where she should have gone for the previous work, clearly...:banghead:

Certainly not selling her now, will reduce the mileage and have more van action. Actually improving my driving and general attitude to the road.....Go with the flow and accept that everything is faster, especially uphill with no run up :043:

In another 20 years, I could have two classics on the drive :040:

Thats a nice clean tidy van! Looks like a good find to me.

Have got a soft spot for the escort vans, saw a mk1 today in mint condition. Bet it would be worth crazy money!

Any one intressted in the chevette its on the road! Passed mot! Done a few hours driving in it yesterday and today. Ran well!

Few issues that need sorting but it has put a big smile on my face! Well worth the hours spent welding her up, looks better underneath than on top...

Still need some more money and lots of time to get it to show condition but happy enough for now!

Could do with a 5speed gear box when not on country roads, it will sit at 50/60 okay but anything higher its reving too much for my liking/comfort!

But thats next year or year afters issue!

Eunos hardtop!

Ever see the one that competed in the pukekohe speed run in nz??

Competed next to yokomako hiranao's legendary R32, think it was pushing close to 600bhp, had lead weights in passenger footwell to balance it out, monster...

There's a few crazy ones out there. Mike whidetts quad rotor mx5 is 1000bhp + as far as I can remember. Mental.

Old car, a 57-reg Civic had been an excellent car.

The starter motor failed, which ended up with me having to change the entire clutch as well - bendix had mashed the gears on the (modified single mass flywheel).

It had an uprated pressure plate to handle the 32% increase in power, 22%  increase in torque - this had pushed the clutch hydraulics to the limit - weak point was the 'damper'. Once bypassed the gearchange was really nice again.

The 'failure' had me thinking that owning the same car for 10 years might be 'a sign' a change was due.

Always loved the 'toblerone triangular originality' of the 8G, but earlier 9G's lost something in the looks department, despite apparently being a better vehicle.

The new 10G - this one - got much of that slightly controversial originality back again, so I decided on a budget and started working things out.

Outright purchase like I did with the 1st one wasn't possible - PCP was required. Never mind - house and mortgage have limited funds but something's still on ... live once and that.

The 57-reg failure was on Monday ..... ready on Friday midday after a lot of communications ... when I went over to the new-car side of the Honda dealership.

My old car actually had a full Honda Service History and very low mileage (42,500) and was in excellent condition everywhere - top specification, so I would anticipate £4k in a private sale, perhaps £3k in a trade in.

I was offered £2k and a smile - nearly filled it!!

Still I decided to continue - time for change. I had wanted a Blue Civic Sport Plus - 11 speakers, adaptive dampers, heated front seats and sunroof over the more basic still high specification Civic Sport.

Several hours later I was winging it to USA for 2 weeks. I remembered the WeBuyAnyCar con-merchants but when I returned, asked if I could sell privately to get more than the £2k - YES.

Offered £2,750. After 5 days I opened then closed my file and it decreased to £2,660, then £2,440 without changing anything.

Once I had decided to sell the car, I 'tested' the new, stock clutch with the uprated engine - not a chance! Slips easily.

Celtic had given an option, once mapped, that an engine could have its original map re-inserted for £50. Despite being 4 years later, I rang them and 'not a problem' - arranged where to take it, and it was 'de-mapped', eventually, with my original map. Apparently a map is VERY specific, for perhaps batches of chips / ECU's but definitely not compatible with every model of the same designation. Once done, it ran perfectly, but was obviously both down on power, and no problem for the new clutch - job done.

I had been given a date of 20th September for the delivery of the Blue Civic Sport, so had 2 weeks left at this stage. Car was clean and had just vacuumed inside, so took a load of photos inside and out - looked great.

MOT and service were due. I placed an ad in Autotrader, who recommended a value of £3,530 (not bad!). In view of the pending MOT and service I set it at £3,350. Fair enough.

I had perhaps 8 enquiries within 24 hours, the 4th of which came up from Birmingham, wasn't certain of the clutch bite point (bit high but is adjustable) but said he wanted it and bought it for £3k.

Contacting the dealership they obviously had NO IDEA where the new car was but 'could arrive any day, any transporter'!!

There's a scam going on with car Insurance Companies - leave it until the same day, or one day before and they ramp up the insurance, so you have to arrange one week before.

I used several comparison sites, compared with my 'broker' and going direct with LV= was much cheaper. The broker couldn't compete, even quoting LV= so I went direct.

20th September came, and went - no sign. No news. No ideas.

I complained to Honda directly as well, who 'sympathised'! All hatchbacks globally are made in South Wales - priority is obviously elsewhere in the world, not UK!

I consulted Carwow and started receiving quotes for the Sport Plus for the same rate or LESS than I was quoted by the dealership.

I threatened to cancel ...

Honda intervened with some poor explanations - reasons were obvious but information is poor to the dealerships, so not really their fault.

I told the dealership I wanted to cancel, I had read the clause stating there could be charges incurred ...

Then was told even if I did go to the other dealer, Blue Civic Sport Pluses were not available until December ... which appeared true ... but for a slightly higher deposit, I could have a White Prestige ... and for a LOWER monthly payment ...

I reassessed all variables - made sense, particularly in view of all of the taxi bills I was paying - myself and the wife ... DONE.

There you go.

INSURANCE: I rang up LV= to advise of the change of vehicle, anticipating an 'Administration fee'. "That's fine Sir" ... I paused. She understood. "NO CHARGE".

GOOD SIGN!!

It is VERY NICE - but BIG.

To think they started like this:

Image result for Civic CVCC

That was bigger than the original Mini, but about 3 feet shorter than this one.

If you can stretch to an 'R', and you don't mind attracting a little attention, its the only car in that 'category' to get.

Others are faster - in a straight line - .... I like it but I don't think the wife would have approved if I rocked up in one, even if the young lads would have gone ballistic!!

It started kind of cute/ugly and now it's cool/ugly

I have quite a few options to weigh up before I decide anyway. I spent almost £2000 on my car in the spring so I'd like to get some more use out of that first.

Makes sense - know what you mean.

The other thought is that it could be the start of an even bigger bill .... not wishing it on you, but sometimes I believe 'there's a sign' that it's time to move on.
