Strictly speaking, pitch refers to the angles used to create the tooth profile on a given gear. However for our purposes, we can think of it as a number referring to how big the teeth are.

For your spur gear and pinion gear to mesh properly without grinding each other into oblivion, they should be of the same pitch.

The merits of different pitches is something that can lead to spirited debate between hardcore engineering types, but for our purposes, all we really need to know is that gears of the same pitch work together, while gears of different pitches tend to destroy each other.

Try and help yourself a bit! :) What car does your spur gear originally come from? Make and model would be useful. Then someone might have a chance of telling you what pitch gear you need.

Post a picture of the pinion and spur gear, maybe with a ruler for scale next to them ( decent, bright picture on a white background ); us old dogs can more than likely make a visual determination for you if you have no idea yourself.
