4WD off-roader ideas

Hi,

Bit of a newb so apologies.  I grew up with a lunchbox and have recently dug it out and rekindled my interest.  Now looking to get a 4wd off-roader that offers lots of flexibility for hop-ups etc depending how my interests developed - don't want to spend a lot upfront if can instead gradually add to a good model over time assuming my interest stays.

What I'm after (bit of a wishlist but hopefully can get all of them?):

  • Off-roader, capable of good jumps (not a truck as will keep the lunchbox as a true basher)
  • Fast - (preferably from the off) brushless and/or capable of running of a low turn brushless (9t?)
  • Robust - Strong enough to still be a bit of a basher
  • Kit - preferable as really enjoyed building my lunchbox many years ago (although my research so far suggests most cars at my level are going to be RTR)
  • Hopups - mainly aimed at fun but I'd like something that I can get running for about

Ide buy a good condition 2nd hand 1/8 buggy and then refresh it and convert it if its not already. It would be like building a kit only stripping it first. But it would need beefy elecs so could get expensive fast but could be done cheaply too.

Theres a losi 8T truggy converted roller on here for

AS has already been said, Buy something good from the offset. Strip it, use the internet and indeed this site to do sensible upgrades, rebuild with all new bearings, bushes, a quality brushless set up and go for gold. You will appreciate it and know exactly how it all goes together when you break it........and you will break it.

Thanks, think I was concerned about buying pre built (rtr or 2nd hand) as wouldn't be be able to strip it down but I figure that's not the case.

With regards to what to look out for, any more specific tips of what to look for (either in features or preferably in terms of model names)? Will look into the losi later, not come across that one yet

Thanks

Cheers. To be honest I don't really know what to look for though with the new ones, and the vast majority are going to kill my budget!

Any other tips for what to look for? Reading about the losi 8 it sounds very good-possibly more than I need- but at least I shouldn't grow out of it.

Would the electrics needed be similar/same in that as in a hyper 7? The big downside is that until I've spent all the money doing it up I'll have nothing to run I guess

It all depends where you want to run it as a basher.

I have a tamiya rising storm and a hyper 7 and arush EVO but that thing is worthless

I really enjoy my rising storm, comes as a kit like your Lunchbox. Easy enough to assemble with your little one and it does need work as standard, bearings, springs, front shock Tower is weak. But if your after a little adventure where parts are pennies the df02 is a good little basher. Mine gets ample abuse, it's still just as good as when I first got it just faster and can go on terrain it would never manage as stock.  But you can learn about that and teach your little one like the df02 bottoms out on everything as standard, so stiffer springs keeps it up.  Larger buggy wheels gives it more ground clearance etc. At 5 he may not understand much to that detail but it's nice to have a half decent base where upgrades actually make a difference.

Also there's a few df02 owners on here so info is easy tofind

Also hardcase lipo batteries fit in very snugly so they are a little safer than in other models.

I wouldn't let a youngster drive a brushless hyper 7 that is dangerous. But a plastic fantastic 1/10 brushless might leave a hefty bruise, rather than the hyper 7 that could easily break someone's leg

Thanks. New rc will be for me really but I note your point.

Been reading today about 1/10 but keep hearing how fragile they are compared to 1/8 - is there truth to that?

It's a very confusing world!

Figure I want something to bash which wouldn't be too out of place (or further upgradeable) if I did ever decide to take it to a local track. Or am I asking too much?

From what I understand fast in races are fragile in bashing.

My hyper 7 could happily jump 30foot in the air and land bad and still survive.

The df02 would struggle with jumps over 6foot high to be honest. But it'll fly along offroad all day long doing half decent jumps.

Not sure on other 1:10s vs 1:8s though
