  1. Ziggy, there's no such thing as a dangerous vehicle (unroadworthy stuff aside); it's the driver or rider that makes the difference to the accident rates. If you're a good rider or driver you have a high likelihood of being safe because you're switched on and well aware of the others in traffic around you, then if THEY make a mistake you can compenate and stay out of trouble. Plus you'll know your own limits and those of your vehicle & the weather and you will be riding/driving within them. Sadly, you do have to compensate for the inability of others to be safe out on the roads today and even more so if you drive any kind of small vehicle. If I could give any new guy setting out on the roads for the first time some advice, I'd say "Always leave yourself a way out"

  4. I didn't say they were! LTZ's, Raptors, Big reds etc certainly aren't at the cheap end of the market. You took what I said, which was in regard to Ziggy's having a primary means of transport with a good transmission so he can out some reliable miles on it, and added in my second comment about my desire for a 4x4 with real diffs and got a conclusion that I didn't intend. Maybe I should have made myself clearer, sorry. The original comment still stands; buy a good quality quad even if you have to buy secondhand as it'll be better engineered for durability and of course with the huge amount of different far eastern imports available, parts are easier to come by (and often cheaper) for the established brands.
  5. Everybody's the same Ziggy. Just don't do what my mate did and got insured as a named driver on his parent's policy. When the time came that he needed insurance in his own name, they crucified him despite being older and wiser. My opinion, FWIW; No claims bonus is assessed as a percentage of the policy price so rack up a few years' NCD on whatever is relatively cheap to insure and then when you transfer it to something dafter (like my 2 american cars, group 16 and 17), your NCD will jump in value tremendously and make the policy bearable. Depends on the quad, mate. If it's going to be your primary transport keep away from the cheaper end and buy something used but with a proper drivetrain. That's one of the main reasons I'm going the 4x4 route with min, better cornering with real diffs. Take some vehicle details from the ones on sale on the 'bay or exchangeandmart.co.uk and plug them into the webpage I linked you to earliuer. Like i said, it costs now to ask.
  6. That's a bummer. An expensive lesson; ALWAYS pay extra for insured shipping! It's not just DHL. I used to drive the trunk run from Tyneside to Kidderminster for another huge parcel company every night. We used to stop and collect at M1 J28 every night, and one time the depot themselves had called in the police who were waiting when I arrived that night. They checked me & my trailerload of stuff out afgainst the manifest and let me go. Later I discovered that they'd arrested a local delivery driver for theft; he was collecting the parcels and logging them in but somehow the valuable ones weren't making it onto the trailer!

  8. Probably because it's cool to pin out where you're going and where you've been both as a planning aid and as a reminder of happy times and big adventures once you're home. I used to drive as far afield as North Africa and I've been into Asia several times (including before the first gulf War into Iraq when we were friends witn Saddam!!) and I had a "Sunday Times" world map, about A1 size, on my office wall doitted with loads of coloured pins. each pin was an amazing story in itself.

  10. I couldn't tell you what size the screw is as i don't have my marder here. But if you don't have a spare that will fit & you'll have to buy some you might find it useful to have a complete screw kit. Long term it'll be chaper than buying the little packs of odd screws from the model shop, many of which you'll never use.   11. Oh, I'm not against that and I wouldn't call Eddie a wideboy. He's an entrepreneur who spotted an opportunity. I mentioned it so people would realise or remember that was what happened bac then, otherwise you don't get a real perspective. Eddie Jordan's was a real shoestring-budget operation for some time and I greatly respect his business sense. I'm in business myself and I fully applaud Jordan's efforts. If Eddie made more money for his team (and himself) by going that route then that was absolutely the right thing to do. In fact I'd go one step further than that; if any of the other teams had actually studied Schumacher when his dad knocked on THEIR doors they could have had hiim for free for the first year but THEY missed out. Not only did Jordan spot a potential superstar but he managed to persuade his family to PUT IN money. Now THAT's good business and a fair exchange of values: the Schumachers got a step on the ladder to Michael's ultimate goal which was to build his own team at Ferrari, and Eddie got a pot of extra money to buy a bigger bilgepump to keep his ship afloat another season. It was a brilliant move for both. I can never understand those who moan on about the truly great people in our world. Burning ambition and eager desire should be encouraged not moaned about. I guess it's the British disease. At the top of your field, whatever that is, there is only a small gap in talent between the also rans and those who truly stand out. The difference is burning desire, either you've got it or not. If you have it, failure isn't an end result, it's the start of the next step, to learning what went wrong and putting it right. If you don't have it, failure os an end in itself and the insecurity will lead on to looking for somebody else to blame. Those who have the burning desire will always be looking for the opportunity. When it arrives they might only have a couple of thousandths of a second to recognise it, weigh up risk & reward, then act upon it. Those who don't have the buring desire will not even see the opportunity, they'll just be another "also-ran" and come into the pits to b*tch about getting cut up into the first bend. It's F1 guys, this is the absolute pinnacle of motorsport, it's not a carnival procession!!!!! Schumacher or Senna? Oh that's a close one. They raced together for 2 years and Senna out-drove Schumacher over and again..... But Senna was in his mid 30s and at the peak of his career where Schumacher was an upcoming talent. It was obvious in Senna's last season that Michael would be his greatest ever rival. If only we had them together 1 or 2 more years. What would have happened if Senna hadn't lost it at Tamburello? Nobody will ever know. Remember there but for the grace of God and all that; Schumacher was the one directly behind Ayrton when he came off. That same weekend F1 lost Ratzenberger and Barichello had an almost fatal crash where he came off the track at a higher speed than Ayrton, launching himself over the tyre barrier but luckily survived with some broken bones IIRC. Burning desire!!
  12. I don't know. Eddie Jordan always sold his drives to the highest bidder and his cars fpr many years were a compilation of components from whichever supplier he could get for the best money! Schumacher's dad PAID Eddie Jordan to let his son drive the car that first season when he came out from Karting. The next few races will show how good or bad Hamilton is going to be. Burning desire is where it's at. Only 1 or 2 in F1 each season ever have it.
  13. The good news is that you won't damage anything if you get it the wrong way around. If you're not comfortable cutting pins off you can always just use a servo extension lead instead of the power switch. Plug it in when you want to play and unplug it when you're finished instead of switching on and off.
  14. Been working!! Got a nice little job, 4 nights at the Terminal 5 construction site at Heathrow, waiting around with trailerloads of bits of a big crawler crane. Total mileage, around 700 to get there and back and, erm, 30 on the job site; most of that was getting off site and driving across to the freight village to get some kip as the dayshift started and the planes started coming back in each morning! So now I'm home and I haven't slept properly for 5 days. I'm way past tired and wide awake again. D**n, airports are noisy places when you're trying to sleep!!

  16. 2 options: The first is to buy a gasket from somewhere like modelsport, S&B racing, fgandbajaspares.co.uk or similar. Get a couple, they're cheap and you can never have too many spare gaskets plus, even if you were to buy half a dozen, they'd still fit in one envelope to post. Buy them now and they'll be with you tomorrow. Keep spares in your toolbox. Second would be to go to a GOOD car shop (NOT the type of place that just does wheels & sound systems or Halfords but a proper car parts shop or motor factors) and get a sheet of GASKET PAPER. This is exactly the stuff that the original FG gasket was made from. The only difference is that FG stamp theirs out with a die that gives a clean cut. You will have to trace out the shape you want & carefully cut it out with a hobby knife & sharp scissors. Don't use instant gasket type stuff. It will make a real mess of your car and it's ne4ver very good except in a few very limnited circumstances. FG exhaust ports aren't one of those circumstances!! It's actually OK to make a temporary repair on a damaged gasket for water pumps, oil pumps, rocker & cam covers & the like but not in applications that are subject to the extreme heat & pressure of an exhaust manifold.
  17. I'm guessing it's a pullstart. If it isn't, ignore the rest of this: Does the pullstarter pull out even though the engine doesn't turn over? If so it could be the one way bearing or other pullstarter problem. Check by trying to turn the engine over from the flywheel. If the pullstart doesn't pull out and the engine won't turn from the flywheel, take the glowplug out. Can you turn it over now? If so it was probably just stuck at TDC because of a tight pinch. If not then it sounds like it has seized up.
  18. The reason it all failed is because the surfaces weren't clean when you put the sticky pads on, then followed up with the superglue. All you have to do when you get all the old crud off (new baja owner's right, you can buy superglue remover but its just acetone, same as you can buy by the litre, dirt cheap, as nail polish remover) is to clean the surfaces. Again your acetone/nail polish remover will do fine. Let it evaporate thoroughly, press the double sided tape onto the receiver first, take off the masking paper from the second sticky side and press it onto wherever you want it to go. Car shops sell double sided sticky pads that are exactly the size you want, for fixing mirrors back onto windscreens. I buy them in bulk and use them for allsorts; all the numberplates on our vehicles are stuck on with just 2 of them (no screw holes so it looks neater) and they're about impossible to pull off without heating up first.
  19. Yep, they've all been sprayed, they come with a white shell as standard. The secret to getting an excellent paint job is preparation. The surface of the shell needs to be completely clean and keyed to allow the paint to "grip" the surface. If paint's flaking off it's because the surface wasn't properly prepared & primed beforehand. Here's a tutorial. It's aimed at car customisers but the process is exactly the same: http://www.torquecars.co.uk/styling/plastic-painting.php Remove the window grilles carefully and follow the instructions in the link. It's extremely important to wash the shell in warm soapy water first. Don't be tempted to skip this step, it's vital to make sure the paint bonds to the surface so it won't scratch or chip off. It will get rid of any remining mould release agent (a silicone compound used by the moulders so they can get the shells out of the moulds quicker and with less damage) before you key it up. If you key it up before washing it you riun the risk of forcing mould release agent into the texture of the keyed surface. Follow the tutorial and enjoy a happy evening's painting!
  20. Shouldn't be a problem. MT do at least 4 different fuel blends that have nitro content up to 25% and at least one at 30%. Out of those, Big Bang is designed for monster trucks and I'm sure there will be some others suitable for your car. But be aware that some of the blends designed for r/c flying use a lot of oil.   21. The situation is that you will have already paid the "over the counter" price to Hobbythek, which includes VAT at the standard rate (17.5% in this country and IIRC 16% in Germany). There is no import duty on goods coming into this country from other EU countries. So, you do pay VAT, but you pay it at the source and there's no import duty so it's just like buying from this country. I've never seen a 5% overcharge from Hobbythek, or of I have I haven't noticed it. If I were you I'd call them and ask about it. They speak very good English and aren't the kind of company to deliberately set out to rob you.
  22. Yep, you can do that ziggy but remember that you'd need to clean it out afterwards if you were ever to use plain water again in it. I think the best way must be to use soapy water to get the thick off in the ultrasonic. Normal detergent is a good degreaser and de-oiler, and it's all the industrial guys ever use that I work with. Their ultrasonic machine has a bath 2.5m by 2.4m by 2.5m deep and as I said they clean jet engine parts in there including turbine blades (and bearings!). The water won't harm the bearings unless you let them go rusty. You can prevent this by drying off properly and then dunking or soaking in WD40. WD40 is a water dispersant (that's what the "WD" stands for in the name) so it will drive off any remaining water from the insides of the bearings and leave a coating preventing rust when it evaporates off, leaving you a spanky clean bearing to relube and use again.

Ziggy, your description of how it works is close.. but you don't quite have the physics right. :good: :good: It works great on everything including engine components and electronics and yes, even bearings: My mate uses a 50/50 mix of deionised (or distilled) water and meths for cleaning the elctronics, and I have a customer in my business that carries out ultrasonic cleaning on an industrial scale on jet engines, turbine blades and even ship & oil rig components.
  24. Yep, they definitely work and you can also use them to clean electronic components etc with the right solvent. A mate if mine uses them to get dead & water damaged mobile phones working again, 5 minutes' work he says it's the easiest 30 quid he hever earns!!
  25. Hamilton was incredible. I started watching Schumacher closely about 8 or 9 years ago and to me, right upto the end he was head and shoulders above the rest, even his brother who developed into a fine racer. He didn't always get the result he wanted but he always gave 110 percent. Even in his controversial days when people "got their own back" on him, he never moaned about it bit on the days when he was perceived to have done wrong to others, they ALL moaned about him to anybody who would listen. It's called composure, burning desire and ambition. Schuey had it in spades. but the kid Hamilton certainly showed a lot of that today. When you couple that with the 10 years of training Hamilton has been going through with Ron Dennis, just waiting for his main chance, I think this guy might well be the new Schuey. I hope so, we need another Michael to stand head-and-shoulders above the rest of the "also-rans" and show them how mediocre they are. That said, I think it might well be a ferrari championship again this year, those red cars are smokin'.
