Hello TC,
I hope you don't mind me bothering you like this.
I couldn't help noticing as I trawled through some posts from a few months ago that you have an astonishing knowledge of scooter carburettors.
So I'm wondering if you might be able to offer some insight on a small problem I have with my scooter?
It's a Piaggo Sfera 125 RST from about 1996. It has the pre-leader engine with a Mikuni BS24 carburettor. Now, it doesn't enjoy starting from cold unless I twist the throttle a bit, then release it before pressing the starter. It fires straight away if I do this. This is fine by me, but after a little bit of a ride, or even a long one, if it's left switched off for a few minutes for something like going into a shop it takes quite a few turns on the starter to get going, and then it stutters and judders and won't produce full power for a couple of hundred metres in a very embarrassing and slightly irritating manner, which is exaggerated when you have a queue of impatient cars 2 inches from the tiny rear wheel!
It has defied my efforts so far- the spark plug is new, the air filter clean, the valves set correctly, the fuel tank cleaned out, the carb cleaned, a new tap and fuel lines fitted, the breather tube is clear and I'm all out of ideas!
It will 65 mph on a flat road if I duck down behind the screen and do everything else quickly enough, it's just this juddering thing now
Thank you
Nikki

awesome news to hear Nikki .
a wrongly re-set needle clip can cause overfueling , if all the above was to fail my last place would ahve been a re-look at the carb and its slide needle settings just to be fully sure .
great to hear the sfera is back to being itself again, i just got new rubber on the piaggio skipper, went with avon viper strykers this time round .Ride safe <3

hi nikki sorry i not been about much
first off, check your carb connection to the motors manifold, a slight air leak caused by perrished rubber hose/poor fitted clamp - no gasket can provide just enough extra air to cause starting problems . can be either end the airbox hose to carb join or the carb to motor manifold , usually these two places get overlooked.
if that does not help, try tweeking the idle screw slightly to bring up the resting idle, what this is doing is moving the throttle slide up slightly , when your cold start its like an added little extra air and fuel and can sometimes stop poor starting right from the bat. the other area is the coldstarter aka the auto choke, these can start to fail over time and leave the choke semi engaged so it acts up , or just does not open the choke when starting due to it failing.
If all else fails you could come and join The Scooter Shack forum, we have a whole forum of scooter tuners and motorcycle mechanics logging in that could offer other insights that could be the problemheres a link to the shack if you wanna pop by and lurk /read up https://www.scootershack.co.uk/

Gone fishing....
Pics from Seaton beach, e.devon

mackerel feathers all done, pennel pulley rigs all built, spare snoods made up, reel backed with 50lb shock leader, now all i need to do is make a rod bag up so i can carry the telescopic 5pc rod on my back with my rucksack on the scooter and im ready for some mackerel bait fish fishing
-
Just converted my camera tripod into a sea fishing beach rod tripod holder, used a 1/4 to 3/8 camera thread adaptor, reamed out a chunk of hardwood ( half inch thick by about 2.5 inch wide ) , mounted the thread adapter into the reamed out hole and buttoned it down so it fits the quick release base on teh tripod head , now all i need to do is carve / sand out a nice semi circle to hold the rod blank in and use some small tack nails and some rubber inner tube to make a nice padded rubber base so not to scratch the rod blank.
should he able to use some old left of webbing straps to make up some sort of clips i can then strap the tripod to my rucksack , being small when closed down its not so large and having extender legs means i can adjust it to suit the beach - rod length

Spark plugs !!!!, how many different variations !!!!, gave up trying to find in the real world (yep in a store), back home, EBay, within seconds found the correct ones and purchased a box of 10.
-
aye its very rare they keep stock of plugs for small block motors, you would expect them to given they sometimes sell chainsaws and strimmers etc etc....... i would look through yellow pages and find a couple lawnmower/chainsaw repair shops local to you, then pop in and see them, i think you will find they will have a good knowledge of places that stock the small plugs and if not they will have some stock on shelf

places like halfords will only stock the most used sparkies in bikes and cars.
bike shops you may get the small motor sparkies, but again they tend to stock plugs for the bikes they sell and most of the time the most popular sizes used in bikes .
take the br8hsa its a popular scooter plug used in most scooters in the 50cc range and its a fairly stocked product but then you goto something your largescales use your gonna find bike stores not holding them as much, BUT if you pop to places that sell and repair chainsaws and lawn mowers your going to have a chance they stock your required plugs due to the fact they are the same type of motor and use undersized plugs

Petrol Problems

compression test see what sorta psi your getting, saves you tearing down the cylinder for inspection can rule out rings that way.
check seals on carb, if your using gaskets you should replace them each time you remove carb, but check they aint leaking, an air leak is a pain in the arse .......... pop the carb off clean the float bowl / primer bulb and check the jets ain got a bit o dirt in, the main jet will be clogged if your getting an idle but bog n stop on throttling up

Can't believe what happened tonight.
Approached the roundabout turning right all nice and proper. Saw a car on the left thinking he would stop. But oh no. I just cleared the roundabout and bam straight into the side of me at full speed... ffs...!!
-
Had one today. just come out of the city main centre onto the outer ring road. was first at the left turn only at traffic lights , being on a scooter i took my position centre of the road in a defensive manner. all was good. lights change and i rode the corner onto a dual section of road, indicated with fair warning done my lifesave checks and mirror checks and made my way into that lane. all i saw was a silver Merc hauling speed ( limit is 30 i was at 30, he was doing atleast 45+) , he under took me very close so yes i gave him the two finger salute , he then could not decide what lane to take, left only or left - straight on.
i went into the left straight on due to the road being dual and i needed to be in the right hand lane. made my move and got round the roundabout and corner. stopped at the pedestrian lights on red and it happened, felt this slight push forwards, the merc drive had came right up behind me and tailtapped my rear tyre. i pulled forwards and he intentionaly did the same again. so i sat middle the road for the next mile doing 20mph lol . he drew up beside me at roundabout and i let loose, called him a ****ing muppet how dare he tailtap me how dare he try bully a leaner rider. same time the van driver behind started shouting at him, he had followed the same dude watching him.
Poxy merc drivers if i see that retard again im going to rub my nice dirty toe guard along is nice shiney piece of scrap of a car, teach him a lesson. got home to a bust L-plate

know how you feel guns, had a esa medical assessment they found me fit to work, had to wait a month before i could claim universal credit, filled forms went to interview for them to cancel my universal credit claim stating i am unfit to work. yeah got one side of dwp saying im fit to work and the other side saying i am not..... worse part i now have to go to appeal courts and clog up the courts .... way to go Tory idiots how can you be fit for work but not fit for work .... its the best way to cut numbers from claiming benefits and kill them off so they dont ever reclaim
see if you can find a scrapped ECU buddy , for the sake of £30-50 quid its worth a try , just take a battery with you throw battery on donor car plug in osbII module and read it off see if there many faults showing. then its just wipe the faults clean and install into your motor.

I just got my exhaust from aus i think that was fast im happy with it. But it looks like rust is setting in. Being raw finish mayb this is normal and easy to fix?
-
oil method : run the large scale till its gotta hot pipe then take an oiled rag and wipe it over . problem here is OIL AND HEAT makes fire , its possible the oil will catch and burn leaving you with an even worse mess .
other method is buff polishing and using a steel / metal polish to keep the pipe coated and slow down oxidizing
all these methods need to be done every so often not once in a blue moon so to keep ontop you have to hold a hardcore cleaning and buffing regime

the patina comes from the pipe constantly heating and cooling you get the blue'ing and purp staining
what ever happens a pipes gonna rust you cant keep factory works pipes sparkley shine on mx bikes and you wont on your large scales either BUT you can do some hard core care to keep them looking sweet.
first off you want propper red scotchbrite pads , give the pipe a good rubdown with scotch brite, thats gonna get rid of most of the fine dust rust, next a big can of wd40. with your scotchbrite pipe done wash it off and blow dry it or towel dry it now get that wd40 and spray that sucker all over , leave the wd on dont wipe it off let it evap away.
every couple weeks/month grab the scotchbrite rub the pipe down and give it the wd40 spray.
