Mack1
Well the new carb didn't get much use today what so ever. Wasn't long before it started to play up with no apparent reason. Did notice a black gunge but nothing clicked. Got it home and started taking everything off. Soon found an answer though. Right by my thumb in the picture what looked like a gasket. Confirmed when I took the head off. I have now decided to strip off all the bits and change the crank gasket whilst I'm at it.
.AJ.
That’s the big problem with 2 bolt engines, luckily it’s a easy fix, maybe if worth trying a upgraded gasket?
Mack1
At the moment I have a spare set of gaskets at hand so will use these for now. Ironically this is the second head gasket since fitting the OBR head kit. The original supplied OBR head gasket disintegrated pretty quickly if I remember correctly. I'm thinking that maybe a copper gasket might last longer what do you reckon?
.AJ.
I would try steel reinforced first, copper are meant to be real hard to get to seal properly http://www.davesmotors.com/heavy-duty-steel-reinforced-replacement-cylinder-gasket-set-2-bolt.html
Mack1
Not done much today on the engine. Been to work so decided to do some polishing. Finished one part but still need to work on the other. Too many curves and after nearly breaking my hand when it stuck in the wheel I decided to leave it for a bit as the blood and pain stopped me from holding on to it for a while 🙄. Some before and after pics.
Mack1
Next on job list was to sort out the manifold insulator. The gasket was a perfect match to the bore of the barrel so the next obvious move was to make the insulator match the gasket. Then once that was done it was the same process for the new carb. Results were small but rewarding.
Mack1
Done some more polishing on the clutch carrier, tried with the polishing wheel on my dremel. Looks better up close but not perfect. Think I will leave it at that as I reckon within a week it will be caked in mud anyway. Whilst I was in the area I have ordered a new genuine losi clutch, not another KM clutch. As you can see in the second pic there is no lining left and the spring is so stretched it wont even hold the shoes together.
.AJ.
Port matching definitely makes a difference and the polished parts looks so much better than the rough casting 👍
Mack1
Can't wait now for the clutch to arrive so I get get going. At the moment I'm putting new shock boots on and cleaning what I can. Looking good so far. 1
Mack1
New losi clutch arrived Saturday but working the weekend meant I couldn't fit it till today. Well now all is fitted and engine now back in the truck. Amazed at how quickly I got it to start, set the carb to OBR recommended setting then 4 to 5 primed pumps on the pull start then it started on first proper pull, only need to adjust the tickover.
Mack1
Reinforced DDM gaskets came this morning thanks @.AJ. for reccomending them, won't be using them this time but on the next rebuild they are here and ready.
