best motor combo for a 1/10 2wd buggy

hey guys ive just bought myself a schumacer cougar KR and want to get a decent motor and esc combo. to be honest its probably mainly gonna be used for fun so no need to follow racing regulations etc lol

so recommend me some good ones guys...im pretty **** at soldering so one without awkward terminals is a bonus so at the moment the top 3 on my list are reedy sonic mach 2, orion, or top choice right now is a castle combo.

ive heard good and bad things about everything so just need some advice regarding,

- ease of setup i.e calibrating etc

- power/speed and what KV or turn to go for in a RWD buggy (i want something fast but not so powerful that its gonna do an instant wheelie)

- reliability (hearing some horror stories about castle inparticular)

im in no rush to buy anything as im gonna get the kit built first. so i wanna do some homework as i bought a speed passion combo and tbh have found it difficult to maintain and use, problematic, and very hard to solder.

any advice appreciated.

Trident XT12 ESC and 15t 550 can. Ok, it's brushed but it's cheap and bonkers in my DT-02 chassis. Just a thought.

I'll go away now.

Firstly you want sensored. Yes you don't need it as much bashing as racing, but you are putting a lot of power though only 2 wheels so the more control you have the better.

Next you want nothing beyond 6.5t (around 6000kV). I find my DEX210 not much use for bashing because with its HPI Pro 7.5t motor its just too powerful unless you are running expensive racing tyres that don't last. As a basher it was better when I used a 10.5t motor - slower but you could drive it. But it is set as a mid motor car which is good on high traction surfaces but sucks on slippery ones.

As for what to get:

Mental option - Fusion Exceed 6.5t. Good luck controlling it!

Budget option - Speed Passion 8.5t

What I'd get - Hobbywing Xerun 120A and HPI 7.5t motor

Orions top end escs are good (they are rebadged Hobbywing's) but their cheaper combos are only so-so for the money. Quality stuff, but you can get the same for less with a different badge. Their motors are the same.

Reedy stuff is OK, but again nothing special and you can get the same elsewhere. Reedy isn't the great name it used to be back in the day - these days LRP is the favored brand of AE drivers.

Hobbywing is king of the cheaper end of the market. Most other peoples offerings are either rebadged Hobbywings (Orion, HPI, some Speed Passion) or basically knock offs of Hobbywings.

I have moved to Vampire SR1 speedo and a 8.5T for my 2WD. I also have the slightly better Vampire SR1+ with a 7.5T in my 4WD. Very impressed with them, top line performance and extremely smooth operation compared with the LRP and Hobbywing stuff I had last. Think I paid around

I haven't heard good things about the vampire ESC

Its like everything, everyone has their favourites. There is a thread on the Vampire ESC on oOple and I know a lot of people who rate them. Equally I know people who prefer Orion and LRP. You pays you money and takes you choice. Vampire I can get off the shelf close to my house with outstanding support so it makes sense for me.

Darren does polarize opinion rather but with so many shops now internet only and mostly holding shadow stock rather than physical stock, I consider myself fortunate that I have a real bricks and mortar shop with excellent stock for racing just down the road.

I do not underestimate how hard it is to keep a hobby shop open these days, price competition is brutal as we have seen with JE models closing shortly.

I agree alex, in my experience, if you dont buy, they dont help. Im lucky enough at hobbystores that I know the workers so pop in there to get bits, have a chat, have a coffee and even sit and use their net to search for parts :)

I am not here to defend DMS, they are what they are and I know exactly what you mean by your comments but they are not a social club. They are a business and one that has survived for 20 odd years in a specialised industry serving a fairly small segment of it. I agree they are far better suited to a racer needing a specific part or kit rather than a casual browser looking to kill an hour and drink coffee but there are only two people running it rather than a whole shop staff. I am sure they would love to have the time to chat about RC but the modern business world makes that pretty hard to do.

Like I said I am no apologist for DMS, I am glad they exist and selfishly they are very convenient for me.

I know someone at Hobby stores as well but it is a lot further away for me. I got my sons first buggy there a few years ago and it has always struck me as more of a toy shop, nothing wrong with that but these days I only race so I get stuff appropriate to that.

That's useful

BTW, are you the Alex who races at Lees wood ?

Hobbystores in St Albans has 2 members of staff, DMS sometimes has 4. Both of them do major business online so spend half their working day behind the scenes anyway. Sometimes I like to mooch about and sometimes I go in for specific parts so its nice to have a choice in shops to be able to either just pop in or buy everything you need in one hit, DMS is my wallet killer :D

Ive driven god knows how many miles just to find new shops, distance isnt a problem being a van driver ;)
