Newboy
Can anyone tell me is it worth getting the Himoto mastadonas this is already brushless according to the website I have seen it on, or would you stick with the ion MT?
Greenshot
Hi Newboy, Yes Himoto is brushless but a way less powerfull than iON brushless with Turnigy motor. By th way I just received my pistol radio... let's start the race!
Greenshot
OMG, this small thing is going FAAAAAAAAAAAAST !!!!! I love my iON BL !!!! Nothing broken yet but with that amount of power... I will post pictures soon! What's up on your side guys?
Colicab
Is that the Turnigy Trackstar motor/esc from hobbyking? Contemplating one for my RC18MT
mrsossidge
Broken dogbone here aswell. The smile on my lads face as we ragged it up and down the street tonight was cool. We were drag racing up and down with our Hobao H2. Even with 3 wheel drive it was flying.

Critch
Mine has died of death, none of the wheels will turn under throttle, think I may need to look at some upgrade gear parts, On the plus side my Losi Micro Rally running on 2s is awsome,
MrSix
First of all thank you for your detailed posts about your brushless Maverick. After hunting the web for which cheap little RTR RC car to get it was your thread that sold it to me! Anyway, I've had it a couple of days now and I'm already itching to upgrade it. In all honesty it's plenty fast enough for me with the stock motor, but the 10 minute battery times are killing me. I've ordered some larger capacity ones to tide me over for now but even if it was no faster (I know it will be) the additional battery life alone from the brushless set up is reason enough to upgrade. I was wondering if you could help me out with speccing a brushless set up which wouldn't be too much trouble to install as I'm a total RC novice. I'm using the stock Tx so I'm looking for a plug and play solution. Also I'm interested in upgrading other parts like the suspension and steering to make it handle better or just be a little more durable as I'm sure I'm going to be crashing now and then! Based on the above what would be your suggestions? Thanks in advance!
jtheg
You aint gonna being doing a lot if you keep stock tx as its an all in one receiver and speed controller (esc)! If you are gonna go brushless then it will need: Motor, esc http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=20995 receiver and transmitter: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__31671__HobbyKing_HK_GT2B_3CH_2_4GHz_Transmitter_and_Receiver_w_Rechargable_Li_ion_Battery.html batteries: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=29023 and charger http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__7028__Turnigy_Accucel_6_50W_6A_Balancer_Charger_w_accessories.html A servo, servo mount, motor pinion etcetc Its not an easy changeover. But if your gonna go for it, its worth it!!! and if you push it too hard your gonna need, diffs, dogbones and centre axle. Suspension wise you need I tried the 3 racing ones but they leak! Ive just got some from hobbyking ready to test: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=19870 Edited August 7, 2013 by jtheg
MrSix
Thanks for that mate, do you have a link to the servo, diff and pinion you used? (Or everything else needed for the conversion).Hope I'm not coming across as lazy, I'd usually search myself but in this instance I'm a total novice and have literally no idea what I'm looking for! mrsossidge
JT, how are the hobbyking shocks working out? Need to replace the ones on my lads. Although I may take a punt on the mastadon stuff you linked. Dogbones and shocks.
Tewks crawling
Swapped my plastic dog bones for some nice helion anodised ones after snapping a few plastic ones, If getting them you will have to pack the front diff cups on the diff end a few mill as on full lock the front ones come out and lock on the edge of the hub cups. Once packed I've had no problems.
bosq
Thes could be interesting peeps: http://www.asiatees.com/article?High-Mounting-For-Himoto&id=191 I've just installed these parts, very nice, high quality, fit perfectly - I've also bought other parts for himoto at the same time as spare, they all fit ion : http://www.asiatees.com/model?brand=Himoto&model=Barren&color=&pid=1&rank= As I've burned 2 (brushed) motors I got also heat sink : http://www.asiatees.com/display?Himoto-Barren-Parts%20Hop-Ups&brand=Himoto&model=Barren&id=62790 Also perfect fit - and by now - like 20h with 2200 20c lipo without problems (dont want to go brushless now, I like that set as it is by now - it consumes too much parts already, I'm gonna recover previous motors - they have only brushes broken).
jtheg
Those shocks look rather good, do they leak?
bosq
Those shocks look rather good, do they leak? at the moment no (like 15-20h driving by now). They have 2 small o-rings in the bottom part, seems to be enough I quess
andyinthecloud
Having followed this excellent thread, and had a great day with our Maverick (wife loves it), we decided to search for some new parts (standard shocks are failing already). Cannot wait for them to arrive, also considering taking the step to brushless, but will see how these mods go first! :-) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261317500081&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160
bosq
Guys, how are your BL setups working? (I mean gear mostly)... I'm so tired of repairing brushes and exchanging motors (heat sink helped for a while, but brushes got damage anyway sooner or later - and its a matter of severla hours later in the best case), I might go BL, but will it cause another problems after time? Is it worth or is it abysmal sack for money? Edited December 29, 2013 by bosq
Rhysgent
After seeing this thread i decided to go and buy a maverick ion mt and convert to brushless, Going for the turnigy Esc motor combo Turnigy 2s 7.2v 2200mah Absima r3wp rx (to go with tx in virus 3.0) Animus steel oudrives and aluminium drive shafts and 4 gear diffs I have a alturn usa low profile servo http://www.modelsport.co.uk/alturn-usa-low-profile-servo-bb-mg-high-speed-/rc-car-products/359810 And mounts which i will try and mount for steering the rx has dual rate so if travel is too far i can limit it down with this Few questions as its my first proper for ages as I've been more nitro and petrol How many pinion gear teeth would be a best all rounder (accel/topspeed) Will this work to charge the lipo? www.wirelessmadness.com/rc-accessories/batteries-chargers/chargers/overlander-rc6-vsp-80w-7a-output-ac-dc-lipo-li-ion-life-nimh-and-pb-charger-ol2604 Or would this be better www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Turnigy-Accucel-6-lipo-charger-LiPo-LiFe-NiMH-Nicad-UK-/180676231920?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item2a112482f0 Any help would be appreciated as im a total noob when it comes to leccy Edited January 20, 2014 by Rhysgent
jtheg
Im using this one: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=21689 charger wise if you got the cash then buy the overlander one as it allready has the power supply built in. But the accucell is a lot cheaper on hobbyking (like everything else). Edited January 20, 2014 by jtheg
Rhysgent
Thanks gonna get the overlander one as its what the lhs has in In stock will get pinion too as canr can't wait for delivery Im too impatient Thanks for help just need to make servo fit now
Rhysgent
Got everything up and running now working good except the front dogbones pop out sometimes, I've got the helion animus dogbones and outdrives, measuring the animus ones with the stock maverick they are about 3-4mm smaller, i am going to upgrade to turnbuckles throughout from the mini recon to get some negative camber on the front but what else will help Btw its wicked fast and needs punch control set to full and still gets all wheels spinning and front ones off the ground
Rhysgent
i installed the 12t 5050kv http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=43532 and a 13t pinion but the motor gets really hot to the point of not being able to it, does this mean i need to change to a higher pinion gear or lower and what gear would be best thanks
