My dog has a yeast infection took him to the vets 2wks ago spent quite alot and its just getting worse the vet must have spoken 10 words to me in the 5minutes we was there ( I've seen a lot of vets but this one time I feel ripped off I had to go back for dosage requirements that's how bad it was)

He's had a course of anti biotics

I'm using the shampoo twice weekly , pure coconut oil and pro biotics after afew days anti biotics ran out. Now I want to try raw diet since that boosts imune systems.

I understand it needs to be balanced nutrition but how do I gauge this and what ingredients are best but cost effective ( butchers shops offal would be my 1st thought)

If you've been thru this or use these pet diets ide really appreciate any input things I've read are good are.

Hearts , lungs , bones , celery , tripe , peas ( even chicken bones which I've always been told never do )

We are booked back in the vets his foot is more swollen and red but not weeping or anything like that I also read it gets worse before getting better but its not nice he's a soldier doesn't seem to bother him he just licks it which I'm constantly stopping him wrapping it up but he chews it off and Im scared he'll hurt his foot or open it up.

some joint cause the dog worse as i can vouch for ive never done it properly as my dog got worse a few days after and sadly passed

i wouldnt say dont do it just dont be bothered to much about your wallet yes he may/may not get worse before he gets better

in the sad case of suzie (my dog) she got worse and never got better all due to a bad chea food company

is it your dog in the picture? a staff?

what you may want to do is sign up on a dog forum you will have more chance of getting hold of someone who might know something more about it and if there is a staff forum someone may of gone through what you are now and be able to help get him better.

i dont know anything to be honest but hope he feels better and you get him sorted soon buddy :)

have you thought of changing vets?

Thanks guys he has had canka before in his ears yrs ago but there ok now no smells or iching constantly I wish it was as easy as that ear drops and clean twice a day. I've been putting 100% coconut oil on from forum advice but I'm starting to think its not a good idea since he's not allowed to lick it but I'm keeping it moist with oil so I'm going to stop now ill still give him a table spoon orally.

Were booked in the vets tomorrow but I've read of vets taking far too long to find out what's going on and why. My last visit deminished my respect for this surgery atleast cos I read the last thing he needed was anti biotics but they put him on them.

I know the internet cannot be a vet substitute but hearing others stories can give me an idea if my vet is going the right route.

I'm sorry to hear about Suzie that's heart breaking I can't imagine max not being here and I didn't even consider it could lead to death amputation at worst but not yet he has 3 sores now and I can only imagine what's going on in the toe gaps since there squashed together being swollen he's a great dog and perfect staffy to change perception of the beeed. More of a cat than a dog and gets bullied by a neighborhood cat lol once attacked by a grounded magpie and he fled.

Yeah the pic is max at 10mnth he's 4 now

That goes hand in with everything I've read about them developing allergies later in life the worst would be if he's allergic to his own yeast. Westies are terriers too arnt they ceaser dog I think cute n cuddly

My GSD is on a raw diet, just don't over do it. Lamb hearts are excellent and only cost about 40p, tripe, liver & pet mince (beef, turkey etc) are also worth looking into. There's a guy round here that sells frozen meats for dogs but i'm sure they do it nationwide. If I can dig out the website i'll inbox you it.

Hi,

Our rescue bullie has a skin yeast infection due to a drop in her immune system due to the stress of being rehomed then we lost our other dog and that compounded her problem

The vets will no doubt give you antibiotics to cure any damage done by your dog through scratching, this will appear to work for a few days but then get alot lot worse, so then they'll prescribe steroids, which seem a miracle cure for a week or so then your back to square one with the problem ............................. antibiotics feed the yeast then the steroids supress the dogs natural immune system so it doesn't react to the yeast infection therfore the dog shows no signs till the steroids wear off - it's a never ending viscious circle, not to mention steroids damage a dogs liver and kidneys

Our bullie is now on a lamb & rice diet knibble - dogs are usually intolerent of beef, wheat, oats, cereals

We wanted to boost her own natural immune system, she has one echinacea capsule (the ones from holland & barret)

Plus she has a tablespoon of natural probiotic yogurt morning and night - this has the good bacteria in to help balance her gut and get the yeast levels back to normal

50/50 cider vinegar and water is aslo very good for spraying onto the skin that the yeast has affected - helps to soothe and repair, it changes the pH levels on the skin which the yeast cant grow in thus helping to kill it

Yeast feeds off sugar, carbohydrates are broken down into sugars so the likes of pasta, cereals, breads, potatoes etc such not be fed to a dog with a yeast problem.

The strain of yeast is Malassezia - the condition is Malassezia pachydermatitis ........... It will appear in ears, paws, under the tail, under the legs, wrinkles or folds of skin this is due to yeast liking warm moist conditions, around 25 degrees is their optimum temperature but they can be resiliant down to about 15 degrees and up to around 30.

Im a microbiologist so do have some background in how bacteria grows and what environment they need to grow in

Hope you can get it cleared up soon, and your dog is back to his bouncy self

That's brilliant infomation mate thank you very much I already researched yeast feeding foods so made sure he's had none of those things. Mayb this is down to stress also as he was in a pack of 4 dogs until 10mnth came to me we moved in with my mum for just over a year and she got a 12wk old jack russle and max fatherd it from day one until we moved out again I knew he missed the jack but didn't think it could stress enough to weaken his immune system bless him.

I would like to get the probiotic yogurt I've tried to find it but they all had sugar in where I was looking. And so did natural yogurt I am giving him probiotics in powder form from pets at home you just put a spoon in the water but I want to go natural with him from now on.

Can I buy cider vinegar off the shelf in supermarkets then just mist the areas yeast cling to.

Thank you very much.

He's been put back on antibiotics I tried to state there no good but was told there is improvment so stick with pills and come back next week and the shampoo I'm using is anti fungal so I went with it.

I will be buying the cider vinegar and yogurt if I can find sugar free.

The most important thing is stoping him licking it but if I cover it he chews it off or if its fabric like a sock he drenches it so I put a sock on then carrier bag to water proof but I think condensation makes it wet still or he finds a way in I've got a vet collar but doesn't stop him getting to his back foot so the vet said to try a blow up rubber ring so Ill try that.

Now he's back on antibiotics should I stop giving the pet pro biotics.

He loves the odd carrot are they good for him?

Are hell just wrote reply then my computer froze :shockingscary:

Lets try again .....................

Hey Bud,

Unless your vets is a specialist dermitologist they will only ever prescibe antibiotics and steriods, and when repeated doses dont work they'll say the dog must have an allergy and to give them benedryl or piriton

They have done this to our current bulldog and our previous one, and when i pointed out there treatment was having no benefit and actually making the problem worse i was told if i wanted a "healthy" dog i shouldn't have a bulldog !!! to say i was well pi$$ed of is an understatement.

What shampoo have they given you ??

Malaseb is the best antifungal one but this is only avalible on prescription

The yogurt i use is just from the supermarket, you'll never be able to get one with no sugar in it at all just try and get the lowest value you can

yep the cider vinegar can be bought from any normal supermarket (used on salad dressing's)

Im using "aspell's" at the moment but any brand will do

I have one of those house hold plant spray bottles that i've mixed a 50/50 solution in, i then spray her belly and armpits each morning, teatime and before bed patting any excess off with kitchen roll.

She used to spend all day slugging herself around the carpets and patio plus scratching her belly till she bled :( this has now stopped and she is all waggy tailed, bouncing around and generally enjoying life - never ending food dustbin too :xd:

Carrots wont do him any harm, ours likes apples

Maybe try the yogurt and vinegar along the antibiotics and see how it goes, if you dont feel comftable giving him the pills they leave them off

Ive listened to the vets for many years but an icident with the Dexter our staffy cross we lost 6 weeks ago made my mind up to go down the natural root and so far im finding it a much better kinder way to treat Daisy (the bullie) and she is the happiest she has being since we got her.

If you need any other help please just yell - i notice your in stafford so not far away im by market drayton

Good luck and hope your boy is soon on the road to recovery

Thanks mate the shampoo is malaseb anti bacterial and anti fungal. I hope that's the same you mentioned defo same brand. The vet I saw last night was a lot better she didn't hesitate to touch him like some vets. I did try and say anti biotics are bad this that and she replied don't believe the net lol. (every professionals enemy the net lol)

I always thought bull breeds were healthy dogs well any dog closer to a working dog with the worst being pure bred for show dogs being well suffering at humans hands not sure if you seen the documentary called pedigree dogs exposed part 1 that brought tears to my eyes afew times the breeders on there are no better than dog fighters. ( have you seen wats happening to the German Shepard its disgusting google show type gsd they think it looks better)

I will write down the products mentioned and go find them now max is lucky atm because he's not itchy I've heard that drives em mental he's just licking his back foot and now lips ther turning pink but I can't use the shampoo on his face I've been told.

Yes please that sounds good my butcher said hell give me as much bone as i want but only has good meats I.didnt ask about hearts i will tho but he did tell me to pop up to the slaghter house and buy some dog grade meat direct like bruised meat and stuff ( I didnt know if a blood vessle bursts it bruises the meat and then its not fit for humans) ill take max some of that but before I do that I want to understand it fully 1st or at least to the point I can give him balanced meals I've had some good tips so far and there's some good vids on YouTube.

What would be a typical main meal for your gsd ill guess its around 45kg so I wouldnt feed max the same but gauge it down to his weight ( this is a guess but do you feed dogs 3% of their body weight)

Up until 2wks ago I was getting a staff x gsd beautiful little puppy well bigger than max but I won't bring another dog in now for along while. Gsd are the true dogs but I love every breed too lol
