Smash savage xs build

Righto guys and gals, got my xs a couple of weeks back used off of eBay, came with a couple of battered shells and some knackered centre drive cups, to be fair tho it did already have the turnbuckle mod done and overall is very clean, the shell and new wheels are sorted..

Received nearly all of my goodies today :) just waiting on my drive cups which should arrive any day now.. As you can see I have some proline power strokes with fixing kit and a sway bar set, and a cc blower and a bunch of stainless cap heads to replace the button heads with..

Photos and update will follow as it gets done, feedback good or back welcome :)

Sweet, the penultimate parts have arrived :)

Hot racing drive cups and the final stainless fastners, gonna use those instead of the ridiculously pricey e-clip eliminators..

Just got to round up the hob nobs and a jar of coffee and some patience ready for Saturdays big build..

Righto, no hangover so here abrief write up with some pics of what i did to my xs yeserday afternoon, to about 3.5 hrs to do in total and imho and contrary most opinion out there i found the xs platform quite easy to work on.. i didnt stumble upon anything that was a major ball ache so it's all good an im pleased with the result.. enough waffle here are some pics :)

first up was tranny removal to replace the knacked drive cups for the hot racing ones, this is a simple job to do, 2 nuts and 7 screws later the tranny slips out very easily..

next job on the list was a bit of diff shimming and change the diff pinion gear drive shaft on each end of the truck, again hpi have made some good steps forward in the serviceability dept. with this simple job only needing five screws removed at the front and 7 screws removed at the rear to drop out the bulkheads and get access to the diffs.. nice!

okie dokie, where was i??

next job on the list was to get shot of those pesky e-clips and pins that hold the c-hubs in place, i will just add at this point that i had already removed the bumper set prior to this build and shimmed the lower arms with a couple of m3 washers either side to remove any slack (there is plenty).. getting back to the job in hand tho this is another dead easy job to do and costs pennies compared to the 16 quid hpi would like you to spend on their own version, all you need is 4 m3x40 cap head screws 4 m3 locknuts and 8 m3 washers, simply remove the existing hadware and bin it, replace with the new stuff and the dremel the ends off whilst in place.. the last part is cheating a little i know but it works :)

time to get those shocks off now ready for the sway bare kit and powerstrokes

at this point i would like to apologise because i didnt take any photos of the process as i got so involved in what i was doing it clean slipped my mind, i will say however that the sway bar fitting was relatively easy if fiddly and the schock mounting process was a doddle as the shocks were pre built and only required some oil and some of the mounting hardware from the original shocks to make them fit.. in the spirit of completion here is a youtube link to the shock change tutorial..

hers what mine looked like finished

and heres what it looks like back in one piece

Oops, theres always one isnt there.. hope its not important :)

Got the shocks off of eBay from the toads rc shop, on a side note tho this just happened when I powered her up and blipped the throttle, one of the hot racing cups sheared in half, not happy :(

I've emailed toads to see if they'll give me a new set, if not I'll open a dispute, I have ordered the genuine part also from tower hobbies just to be sure, still peeved tho as I wanted to have a pop at her today..

Yeah have to agree HR stuff just seems to be hit and miss i have some bits from them on my merv and they are tops but bits for the XS dont seem that great as i have heard a lot of people snap them just get the stock ones and heat them up red hot and then stick'em in some old engine oil did it to mine and they anit broke or worn as bad yet about 25 packs on 2s so maybe thats the way to go shame thou as after a long wait they crap out on you

Had my first proper bash with the xs this lunchtime, fun little truck, imho 2s is easily enough power for this size truck, especially as it seems to have inherited the 1/8 savvys handling or lack thereof :) still heaps of fun tho and seems near bullet proof

As said in mdoddy's thread i am going to try and widen my xs with wheely king axles and the wheely king widening kit to make it not so tippy over.not sure if the bearings will hold up to the extra strain put on them tho as i have seen alot of xs's blow wheel bearings with the satandard set up.All i need now is the money to buy the parts :xd: .
