it sounds like your using the older type speed control . servo with a swipe plate and a resistor ? if so check its all making contact as there a pain ..

I cut some of the side out of my battery box and got a aa hump to fit 2cells in the top 3 bottom with the sides trimmed . had it like this for years ... may not work with all cells as some are fatter ..
