RC Storage Devices

Recommended Posts

Hi to all RC Car Enthusiasts,

I’m an A-Level Product Design Student who is currently undergoing research into Storage devices for RC Cars.

I own 2 cars of my own but don’t currently have any storage for them so I am looking to ask other enthusiasts about their own storage devices, especially portable storage devices designed for transporting cars to track days for example.

If any of you could fill out the questionnaire below then that would be brilliant,

Thanks in Advance,

RORKen.

  1. How often do you race your own RC cars at local race tracks?

  2. How many RC Cars do you take to race at one time?

  3. What storage devices do you currently use for storing RC equipment at home?

  4. How do you currently transport both your RC Car and Maintenance equipment to the Track?

  5. If it is a specialist RC Car transport system can you tell me the advantages and disadvantages of it?

  6. If you could change anything about the storage system what would you change? And Why?

  7. Would you consider a storage system that would allow you to easily transport both you Cars, Tools and Maintenance equipment to a Race Track as well as it becoming an area suitable for Maintenance and tuning when in the Pit Lane (for example including an integrated Stand)?

Lets see

How often do you race your own RC cars at local race tracks?

Typically every 2 weeks or so. It can be weekly in summer, and monthly in winter though.

How many RC Cars do you take to race at one time?

2-4 normally. I've got 2 2wd cars so I take both. I normally also take my 4wd as it shares parts with one of the 2wds. I may then also bring one of my other RC's to play with between races.

What storage devices do you currently use for storing RC equipment at home?

My 2wd race cars live in a 2 compartment Caster Racing car carrier.  My tools and other gear travel in a converted fishing tackle box. All the other RC's and their radios live on a shelf/worktop.

How do you currently transport both your RC Car and Maintenance equipment to the Track?

For racing I'll take the Caster bag and the tackle box. I've recently acquired a Turnigy rucksac which I use to carry the 3rd/4th car if I take them, and is used when I go bashing.

If it is a specialist RC Car transport system can you tell me the advantages and disadvantages of it?

Well I suppose the Caster and Turnigy bags are both technically specialist RC transport systems of a sort. The Caster bag is great in that its a good size, not to heavy and pretty robust. Each draw has space for the car and its TX, but little else. The Turnigy rucksac has lots of pockets for tools etc, including 2 that can hold wheel TX's, but the main section is just a big open space, and has no supporting cardboard liner like the Caster has. It can hold 2 1/10th RC's but they aren't compartmentalized and will bump around. The plus side of that is the I can use it for my boats and quads too.

If you could change anything about the storage system what would you change? And Why?

Well I'd love a proper RC hauler bag, because lets face it the converted tackle box looks like, well a fishing box! A decent sized hauler would replace the tackle box and rucksac, carrying the tools plus an extra RC or 2 in the drawers. But they are very expensive considering they don't actually do the job any better, and in some ways are more limited. For example you can use the tackle box as a seat, but I wouldn't suggest sitting on a hauler bag!

Would you consider a storage system that would allow you to easily transport both you Cars, Tools and Maintenance equipment to a Race Track as well as it becoming an area suitable for Maintenance and tuning when in the Pit Lane (for example including an integrated Stand)?

Yes - if the price was right. My chief objection to current haulers is the cost - my current 3 bag/box setup cost less than one of the smaller sized haulers but has greater capacity than a mega-hauler. You'll notice I have no objection to spending money on RC stuff but I expect value in return, which most current RC specific bags simply aren't offering. Make it under £100 and featuring stuff other bags don't and I'd be interested.

I don't race I just bash, but at times I take 3 sometimes 4 cars plus fuel, tools and some spares. I borrowed a co'op shopping basket with a pull up handle and wheels lol it's actually pretty practical and works well. Only thing I would change when it breaks is modifiy it for some bigger wheels...
