Brushless Hyper 7 diff shim thingy

Hi, I wasn't sure where to put this thread so it ended up here because the 7 is brushless...

Basically I'm cleaning up the diff housings and on one of the outputs to the wheels the is a shim which I suppose slots into the groove pictured below:

The other side doesn't have this shim, does it matter if it is absent or do I need to get hold of some more?

Thanks.

There has not been any shims in that location on any cars that I have stripped the diffs apart before, HPI Trophy, Hyper ST and Hyper 9....

Ok, thanks. Annoyingly I've just put it back on the car but I have noticed that with it in place the out drive has less play in it than the other side that doesn't have the shim. I'm going to see if I can find a PDF manual.

The car was bought as a roller and I'm trying to give it a spruce up, I suppose you can never really tell what you are going to get buying second hand.

Also when twisting the output for the rear centre drive shaft it doesn't feel very smooth. The diff feels ok on its own though. I think I'm going to order some bearings but was wondering if this is normal...

Depends what you mean by not smooth, you should be able to feel the bevel/planetary gears meshing slightly but not to the extent where they feel like they are catching.....or it could indeed be the bearings which are shot.

I've seen those shims before, not sure if it was one of the many hypers that have passed through my hands or not.

Certainly not seen them on any of the recent buys and nothing in the most recent complete diff I just got from marder boy.

Noob error!

I put the diff in the wrong way around.

There is a little notch inside the housing that was catching on the diff itself. Flipped the diff 180deg and all is smooth. I will still order some bearings though as some of them seem worn but I just want to get it built so it ca have its first run (in my hands). New bearings will give me another opportunity to do a tear down.
