Colicab
Ok so got myself a new motor for my truggy. A nice Castle 1515 2200kv. So after soldering on some connections and getting it set up I go out to test today. 10secs in and I have smoke coming from the can and my temp guns reading 80c!!! Dunno whats wrong, as its meant to be a brand new motor. Could my bearings be gubbed? I have noticed that the can doesnt seem to turn over as smoothly as other motors Ive had. Little ****** off as I bought this new for
Tug
What voltage? What gearing? These are far superior to Turnigy, that shouldn't happen. Trouble is, buying second hand is risky business.

Colicab
Its a brand new motor!! Gearing is 15/50 and ESC is a Hobbywing Quickrun, again 1 month old. Running on 5s which again was all fine. Only the motor got hot, 50c on a 5 sec run! And 80c on initial notice of smoke. The only thing I did after getting it was to solder on new bullets as the ones it had were too large. Think I have 5mm and it had 5.5mm on or something. But the same setup ran my Turnigy motor fine, all be it a little hot. But even that ran a full battery before it got hot. This is just insta-heat!! Assume I can replace entire innards of a Castle 1515 anyway? Will need to strip it open I guess and have a look.... Just annoying as i got it from DollarHobbzy as its came out a brand new Traxxass kit, shipped Edited July 15, 2014 by Colicab

Tug
If it's brand new, take it back and get the vendor to deal with it. If your saying you took readings and it hit 50C that quickly, it's sounding duff.

Colicab
Thnx lads, think i,ll email them tonite and explain the situation. Am gutted, as I`d been looking forward to getting my hands on one of these motors for a while and had to wait a month after I bent my Tekno kits driveshaft, and was left with it installed and awaiting the shaft ><. Colicab
You shouldn't need to replace the innards if it's new, castle will warranty it for you. They offer repair on anything of theirs but I was lead to believe they were good when things went wrong with new kit? There's a UK distributor I believe for proper warranty claims. I take it the fact I ordered via U.S site which removes these motors from brand new Traxxas kits would make a diff? Tho I guess the serial number on motor lets Castle track it? Smoothybb
Yeah that might make it more complicated for sure. However they won't refuse to take it back for evaluation and depending on what they find, they'll contact you and tell you options. At least that's what happening when I sent mine back, although that was couple fo years I think. Initial contact was a bit slow because of a backlog (of repairs????) but then they made it real easy. Mine wasn't even close to being in warranty though so it was basically a paid for repair.
Smoothybb
Oh, I see, real smooth. I think you were technically correct with your first assumption actually.

arogon1235
Did you say it wasn't as smooth as the other ones if so it sounds to me like the rotor isn't centered properly. I had this with my motor, turns out the the end bell cap on the shaft side had not been tightend down correctly and was causing the rotor to touch the windings slightly, if I were you I would take the end bell cap off and tighten the screws down evenly and see if it makes a difference. I usually go to opposite corners tightening the screws down a little bit at a time.
atom3624
I would contact Castle. They're toughening up their Warranty Claims - I'm blacklisted now, no idea why! They have excellent after sales service - contact them, explain in full, and ask if they can help. They are real enthusiasts. If they can, they really will help you. Al. shdaxner
I dont know Castles returns policy but if you open it up would it void the warranty?
Colicab
Well I took things apart today to see what had happened. Seems it was something much simpler than I had anticipated... Screws for the motor mount were too long and had been rubbing the inside of the motor. Simply swapped them over and the motor suddenly turned as smooth and as normal as my older Turnigy lump. Will try to test with a few revs before putting back in D8T, but hopefully should be ok, as inside of motor seemed a-ok when I looked. cyronn
Trooper did that to his Tekin motor for his 8T and killed it Always make sure the screws are fine, otherwise can be expensive.

Good, Im not the only one lol. Tested it out and seems fine. Got to 41c after a good 10secs burst at full throttle. Spins along fine Hopefully get a shot of it tonight after work

Colicab
Well had a shot or two of this now and I think its been damaged. Last time out I got a whopping 110c Running following : Hobbywing Quickrun 150A / Turnigy 5s (25-35c) / 15t pinion 50t spur. Everything else is like 50-60c max. Battery is cool as 30c
ajlovering
Don't let the smoke out of the motor. You need to keep all the smoke inside as its essential to the workings. I read it on the internet so must be true
