New SSD trail king pro scale chassis

    ssd00300_1.jpg?width=950

The SSD Trail King Pro Scale Chassis Builders Kit was developed to offer discriminating scale builders a more effective weapon for their arsenal. The Trail King offers a level of scale realism that has never been available in a box stock kit - until now. By combining their proven, high performance option parts with an array of unique parts that are only found in the Trail King, SSD has raised the bar and created a kit that can be effectively utilized by scale enthusiasts and performance oriented crawlers alike.

    Scale Engine & Transmission Assembly
The SSD Trail King includes a first of its kind multi-piece molded plastic V8 engine that is complimented by a scale transmission and transfer case assembly. The scale engine houses a forward mounted motor and each component is meticulously modeled as close to the 1:1 parts as possible. The engine is made up of 14 individual pieces, and with a little creativity can be detailed and modified even further. Plus, the transmission holds the motor extremely low in the chassis, providing a lower CG and increased performance when compared to motor forward configurations from other brands.

    Offset Pro44 Front Axle
By using their proven Pro44 axle parts, and combining them with a unique offset axle tube configuration, SSD has designed a scale axle housing that is durable and lightweight. The axle tubes are one piece, so they eliminate the link mounts and associated hardware that shows in the front of the axle - creating an incredibly realistic looking, lightweight axle housing. The axle is finished off with machined aluminum c-hubs and knuckles, 6 bolt locker/ring gear assembly, and hardened steel offset universal joint axles that allow up to 50° of steering throw!

    Hardened Steel & Titanium
The Trail King is a true premium level builders kit. With high quality precision machined parts throughout, the kit is guaranteed to impress even the most demanding builders. From hardened steel machined gears and driveshafts, to the titanium links and SSD Pro Scale 90mm shocks, this kit is fully equipped out of the box. With no need to throw a bunch of upgrade parts at the truck, you can focus on choosing the body, wheels and tires you want - and build a truly unique, high performance scale truck.

£354 converted over, right where i was hoping it would be.

I’m all over this for that money!

My current scx10 is rapidly becoming an SSD build, the quality is right up there, and look just as good as Vanquish imo, but the biggest plus is the price point, and has always been affordable to most people.

I have to say, I kinda agree with you there chap,  biggest let down is the fact it’s a u.k based company that doesn’t directly sell to us, I have to use Rcmart to get my stuff, apart from wheels which come from Rc-bitz.

motor could do with coming forward a little more (IMO). I would like one of those fuel cells though, they look really smart

The Vanquish will have much better axle articulation on both the front and certainly the back due to the chassis shape. The SSD is just straight at the back putting weight up high but not allowing for more articulation. The SSD also has way to much weight in the middle and with a fat battery in there, it could even have rear weight bias. The Vanquish has all the weight as far forward as possible. Plastic axles and transmission, no wheel wells, no chassis stiffeners, no provision for a winch servo. But you get a plastic engine you'll never see.

There's no comparison. It's a shame as I expected more from SSD and I would like to sell themselves. It's hard to support a UK company when they don't sell locally and the supplier that does charges more than shops abroad.

Must admit it's right around the price point I thought since I've been following the teasing from Chris.

I would like if it was sold in the UK though... Having said that, with inflation, we could expect to pay a lot more, so swings and roundabouts I think, if we can get a free shipping deal or something from RCmart it won't be too bad.

I've spoke to Chris about selling stuff directly and he said it's due to time restraints more than anything, it's much easier for him as a very small company to supply to other sellers, rather than advertise, sell, package up and ship to individuals.

Had a proper look over all the photos, and i’ve got to say i’m still all over this like a dirty shirt.

    Things i really like;

Offset pumpkin on the front axle,

Chassis mounted servo sits right behind the bumper mount, stopping the panhard jamming on the servo arm,

    All titanium links,

    That transmission tho 😍

Transmission gears, and all of the shafts look mega duty,

Engine/motor mount, and fuel cell/rx box, being made of injection moulded ABS - which is pretty sense for a plastic, so these should have some weight to them, and with the engine/motor being sat very low in the chassis.

Honestly can’t see anything I don’t really like to be honest.

Yes the VS410 may have better points and aspects vs the Trail King, but remember Vanquish has been around for quite some time now, and don’t get me wrong, i’d still love to get my hands on one. But the price point is way too far above my head to even consider pricing up a build.

For the cost of a VS410 built to rtr, you could buy two of these SSD kits and have them built to full running rigs that are directly comparable to Origin in terms of performance and still have change.

Because of this, coupled with the fact it doesn’t and won’t need an upgrade anywhere, anytime soon, with the only thing i can foresee being upgraded will be to more performance oriented chassis rails.

Thinking I'm more interested in the new VP trans coming out [emoji106]
See no reason why I couldn't put that in something bespoke and then mix in the individual parts from the likes of SSD to get a top of the line rig without the wasted stock parts of which there will bound to be some of, regardless of the manufacturer of any kit.

They aren't comparable though. This Trail king is $449. The VS4-10 can be had for $700. The SSD has no body, no wheels, no bumpers, no wheel wells. Add those up and you're not far off the VS4-10 in terms of price but you still have a plastic gearbox, axles etc and a chassis which looks to have poor weight bias and potentially poor articulation.

You’re the one that made the comparison in the first place lol.

Still reckon you can put one of these in the same place as a VS410 with the same ease.

Mine should also be here next week. I've deliberated back and forth for a few weeks between this and the Element Enduro. I was hoping to see more builds/running vids on the Trail King, but after seeing loads of reviews of the Enduro i decided it would need some investment to make it as durable as the Trail King, so went with SSD.
