If you're going to use a Tamiya TT02 then you're going to want to add the "Tamiya High Speed Gear Set".
Link: https://www.plazajapan.com/4950344545001/?setCurrencyId=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhuL105bQ9QIVSO3tCh2IwgfrEAQYBCABEgI-0_D_BwEIt will allow you to run more gearing options as well as a larger gear pitch (I ran 48DP) to cope better with the increased power from a brushless system.
You'll also want to do a little mod to the chassis so that you can run bigger pinion gears. Basically you just need to cut out some plastic, ...first picture shows my car with the high speed gear newly fitted. If you look at the second picture and compare to the first you should be able to see the plastic part I removed.
You'll also need a "Yeah Racing Aluminium Adjustable Motor Mount" so that you can adjust the motor position for larger pinions.
Link: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353790687435?hash=item525f9178cb:g:qAUAAOSwahVfpBf-Motor wise if you're doing speed runs then you could try the fake Castle motors available from China. They're a lot cheaper and usually do well in my experience.
Personally I'd go for more KV like the 7700KV. I'm using that in one of my speed run cars a 1/12th scale Serpent S120LTX and so far run 106mph on 3S.
Regarding ESC's I agree with Stew that Castle really is the best way to go.
I'd recommend the Castle Mamba Monster 2.
I actually ran a speed run TT02 for one session but decided to sell it before I did any real runs because I had too many speed run cars so wanted to concentrate more on my other cars.
This was how my TT02 Type SR was set up for running a 2S shorty pack...
Have a read of this great article about the TT02 and mods/ideas.

Wish you luck.Dear @GMballistic
Thank you for your guidance and suggestions, very much appreciated !
As you recommended I have ordered the Yeah Racing Tamiya TT-02 Adjustable Aluminum Motor Mount (Blue) ($26 with shipping) and the Tamiya 54500 RC Car TT02 High Speed Gear (68T) Set TT-02 Hop Up Parts OP1500 ($28 with shipping).
Can you tell me more about using the 48DP gears ? I was not aware of the difference and did a search. What spur and pinion did you use for your speed run ? Thank you !
Stew Mack mentions, Robinson Racing (48DP) 49T spur and 48T pinion almost 1:1
Thank you for mentioning the 1/12th scale Serpent S120LTX (your PB 106mph on 3S, very impressive ). Also thank you for mentioning the 7700KV fake Castle motor, I was not aware of the motors.
Cheers

Hello mate, welcome to the forum
Hi @James.S
Thank you !
I see that you have a 124018. Have you changed your gearing ?
I have a 124019 and have upgraded to brushless and would like to learn more about changing the gearing. I believe the stock gearing is 44T and 27T, I have tried to follow the QuadifyRC Ultimate Brushless upgrade Guide brought the 15T pinion gear.
Cheers

Hi All,
I am upgrading my 124019 to brushless and would like to upgrade the spur and pinion for high speed runs.
I have installed the 15 T Pinion Gear on the Racerstar 2445 3600kv Motor Senseless Brushless Waterproof installed the motor on the Motor Mount. But I don't think the stock plastic spur gear will last long with the 15T pinion metal gear and the stock plastic spur gear and 15T pinion gear seems to be slipping, I will open up to confirm.
I am trying to follow the quadifyrc brushless upgrade. A couple of questions;
1. Is that correct to use the 15 T Pinion Gear on a Racerstar 2445 3600kv Motor Senseless Brushless Waterproof with stock Spur for speed runs ?
2. Do I need to change the plastic spur gear to metal ?
I am using this motor mount;
Thank you, cheers

Hi all,
I left on message for Stew Mac and I heard back;
"Yeah the TT02 makes for a great starter to speed runs. Heaps of options and cheap spares. The esc was a Hobbywing 8bl150. But honestly I prefer castle esc. The mamba monster X or the older mamba monster 2 are both really good.
Colt RC make some great Le Monds type bodies. A good motor combo would be the Mamba Monster X and castle 6900kv 1410 motor on 3s"
I was surprised the Mamba Monster X is about the same price as the XR8 Plus.
I would appreciate any suggestions, thank you !
Cheers

Can't go wrong with Stew and his fast Tamiya.
I picked up a 100£ drift car, put in the same electronics as you have listed and got 108 mph on 4s, the cheap cars can do it albeit a bit of tinkering needed.
The other choice was twice the price and i would be less likely to cut holes in a hpi rs 4 chassis for big motors without testing a cheaper car first.
The WL toys can be made very fast, some guys doing 150mph+ with his.
There was also a maveric strada same price as the ftx and similar chassis that also did 101mph with less mods.Dear @Redback
Happy New Year !
Thank you for the message and the suggestions, very much appreciated !
Is there a build thread for your TT02 ?
The Fastest Banzai looks like a fun project. In some ways I have more fun making the cheap cars into something and I learn more. Thank you for sharing.
Very impressive ! Looks like you are using the XeRun XR8 Plus
I was not aware of the HPI Maverick Strada or the HPI RS4
Cheers

I would appreciate feedback, I am new to speed run cars
Maybe 104001 ?
- 104001 $170 with shipping
- Body $50
- XeRun XR8 Plus ($160 plus shipping and program card) Has turbo, 6S, and sensored
- Foam Tires $30
- Power HD R12 $45 plus shipping
- CNHL Battery $100, 3S or 4S
- Gears $30
- Total $585
I have not been very impressed by the WL Toys quality. Another option would be TT02 with similar electronics

Hi All,
I am new to the msuk forum just posted an introduction. I only started with RC in August but I have gotten the RC bug bad !
I have built a 124019 and enjoy researching, building and speed run testing.
Would like a better 1:10 chassis, is there a "go to" $200 to $300 1:10 chassis for speed runs ? Thinking about $500 to $600 for the total build (plus transmitter).
- Chassis $250
- Body $50
- ESC $150
- Servo $100 Power HD
- Battery $100, 3S or 4S
- Total $650
Thinking maybe 104001, but I have not been very impressed by the WL Toys quality
Thought about LC Racing LC1085 ($319), seems like it would make a great entry level 4WD race buggy / basher, but would take lots of work to make into a speedrun chassis
Maybe TT-02
I welcome other suggestions, thank you !
Cheers

Hi All,
Happy New Year !
I have gotten the RC bug ! August 15th 2021 I was at a local park and they were having an RC car race, knowing nothing I thought "looks fun and good hobby during COVID-19" and started doing research. Searching on "RC" quickly started finding cars, and quadcopters. Took a long time to start to understand the vocabulary LiPo, ESC, mah, brushless, FPV, KV. Literally spent the first week just understanding the vocabulary. Before August 15, 2021, I knew next to nothing about Radio Control (RC) cars or quadcopters.
I have found a few forums that I like; https://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/ and https://intofpv.com/ and https://www.rctech.net/forum/. Very nice communities of people !
I am 57 and fun for me to start to learn something completely new. I am from the USA and living in Mexico City during COVID-19, have found RC a great hobby during COID-19 although shipping has been a challenge. To be honest I enjoy the building more than the driving, fun for me to research equipment and building.So far;
Cars (Flysky FS-GT5 Transmitter😞
- TT-02 1999 Subaru Monte Carlo - Loved the build !
- WL Toys 124019 with brushless motor - Enjoy testing and speed runs
- XQ2S - Waiting for parts to start building
- MST RMX - Have ordered waiting on parts (https://supergdrift.com/store/so-you-want-to-start-rc-drifting-2/ Super-G R/C Drift Arena blog has been great for learning about RC drift)
Quadcopters (Jumper T Lite Transmitter) :
- Mobula6 - Need to practice more
- Tinyhawk S - Fun for flying in the house
- Tello - Enjoyed learning about DJI technology
Battery Charger HOTA D6 Pro Smart Charger
I found https://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/ forum looking for chassis information about building an inexpensive Speed Car, will post a seperate thread.
Cheers !
Wish List:
- Speed Car
- Flywoo LR V2
- GepRC Phantom
- LC Racing LC1085 ($319)
- WL Toys 104001 (I love playing with the 124019)
- ELRS for Jumper T
