The decision for the money to go to charity is taken individually so although you say the money from your supermarket goes to charity not all supermarkets follow suite
Also charitable contributions are taken at a corporate level and I doubt if the total contributions have increased by the amount taken in bag sale. You can just as well say yes we are giving 100% of the bag sale to charity and then reduce the total by that same exact amount.
Bottom line is that the plastic bag is the item with the biggest profits so no supermarket is going to stop selling them and they can easily. They can use paper bags and give them away free and even use plastic ones if they dont have a handle. These are also able to be given away free.
Personally i hate all plastics as they contain nonylphenols and will turn your kids into hermaphrodites

Advice time from a science bof please
trying to calibrate a temp sensor but doesn't go upto boiling temp as it has a max setting so trying the ice method but run out of ice 
now if i freeze the probe in water turning it to ice will that give me an absolute 0?-
Mix ice with water and put it in the fridge. The water will be at exactly 0 degrees due to the amount of energy it takes to turn ice from solid at exactly 0 to water at exactly 0. 1 CC of water takes 1 calorie to raise its temp by 1 degree centigrade and it takes 80 calories to turn 1 cc of ice at 0 degrees into water at 0 degrees so if you have ice and water together in a fridge you can be very sure it is exactly 0 degrees centigrade

Hmmm.. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the news when trying to make a point about educated idiots. I'll try again.
A common mistake is to judge a persons intelligence by how much knowledge he has acquired. A bit like somebody having loads of spanners and calling themselves mechanics when they dont know what to use the spanners for. Ok so now you lot are going to tell me about how your cars got screwed up at your local garage? THATS NOT THE POINT!! LOL
