actually you can use realplayer to transfer music I used to have a nano (until it died). Also, you can use amaroK on linux.

oh, and rythmbox on linux too.

I just use Itunes, its not very expensive and you can use Spotify as a try before you buy, like I now want 2 new albums, one by Seether and the other by DevilDriver.
