abyd
Like the title suggests I have just ordered a litre of 350 cst treadmill silicone oil. I intend to mix it with baby oil which I think is a very light silicone oil. Since my ftx zorro brushed just leaked its shock onto my floor! I want to make about a 30 to 50 cst equivalent by mixing baby oil with treadmill oil? I'll update this when I see how it goes, I need the treadmill oil anyway and could be useful in differentials maybe.
locky
Baby oil from Johnsons is a mineral oil ie. made from petroleum, so check what you are actually diluting your shock oil with.
abyd
Thanks. I'm not sure why I just assumed that it was silicone, I have not looked at a bottle yet. The treadmill oil will probably be very heavy and tacky. I will have to find something else to use to thin it down with if I use it. e2a: I'll try it straight first if it seems like it will work. Some treadmill oils are advertised as 500 cst so 350 might not be too heavy. Edited October 18, 2023 by abyd

abyd
Very efficient ebay seller got this to me in just 21 hours 😀😀 ! Quote Hi, 350cst shock oil is 30 wt so should be fine as it is It does seem more 'liquidy' than the 'gummy' consistency that I feared, I think that it will work. abyd
I've just filled it up and adjusted the top mounts of both left and right to be more vertical. This oil is definitely thinner than stock on the brushed zorro's front shockers. Might actually be a bit too thin, but probably very well suitable for a rock crawler. Maybe a will buy a bottle of 500 cst too for bashers / sct.
abyd
I've just been out for a blast on rainy wet tarmac and it works really good! I couldn't even really tell that the left shock (right on the picture) had lighter oil in it. Treadmill oil is now my go-to shock oil. £15 for a litre, it's like a tenth of the price!
JonnyUK
In theory you can put any sort of oil in RC shocks. I used to use 100% 3in1 oil in the crawlers. Changed it back to shock oil recently because I rebuilt them and ran out of the 3in1 oil. For stiffer shocks you could use engine oil. For stiffer still, maybe gear oil. It's quite sticky though so it might make the shocks too slow to return. No harm in trying anything though really.
