Hobbyking - Turnigy Centurion

6ft4crawler: Build Thread

This build thread of my Turnigy Centurion will contain important general information, Pictures and info of the upgrades and modifications that I do and how they effect the overall perfourmance of the boat, All helpful input is welcome...

So day one, Here it is just out if the box first thing I notice my stickers don't have any colouring !!! Maybe the printer was having an off day when they did mine ...

Technical Specs:

Length - 450mm

Width - 135mm

Hull material - Fiberglass

Propeller - 30mm X 1.4

Flexi shaft - Flexi length 130mm, Total length 185mm, Flexi diameter 2.3mm, Prop coupler diameter 3.2mm, M3 end thread

Rudder - Length 78.5mm, Width 20mm

Turn fins - Length 44mm, Width (tapered)

Motor - Brishless watercooled 2445 3000KV

Speed controller - 30A watercooled brushless ESC 2-3s Lipo

The kit come supplied as ARTR meaning there was no battery or radio gear supplied so to run mine I've used the following:

3S 11.1v 1300MAH 30C Lipo battery (Eflight high power series seems to fit perfectly)

Etronix 2.4 GHZ Transmitter and Receiver (Spare one I had left over for another RTR model)

Next thing I did was removed the XT90 battery connector from the ESC and the EC3 connectors from the battery's and fitted some deans connectors (Just personal preference as 90% of my RC gear uses deans connectors)

Before buying the boat I did do abit of research and found the same disarta happened to more than one person, The boat would dive under the water never to be seen again due to there being no flotation or buoyancy material on board, So I took pretty much everything out of the boat to get access to the bow of the boat and began to cut some polystyrene to as closer shape I could to the inside of the boat, cut 3 piece, One went in either side of the sponsors and the last went in between them in the middle of the bow, Amd I did a really good job if I do say so myself, While re fitting everything I greased the Flexi shaft with marine grade grease as it had been assembled totally dry from factory !!!!

Inside the boat everything is held down (ESC, BATTERY, RECEIVER) with a poorly designed Velcro strap system that I couldn't seem to get tight round anything and replacing the battery seemed to take forever, So I pulled the Velcro straps out and used some thick double sided sticky tape pads with some pretty strong adehsive, Also looks a lot neater inside the boat so again really happy, For the battery I used some stuck down Velcro one side fitted to the designated battery compartment in the hull and the other side applied to the back of the battery. 21150213_10212679413852800_5296005689945

It was kind of bugging me, No it was bugging the F#CK out of me that my stickers where black any white and not red as it seems they are on every other Centurion I can find pictures of so I peeled them off and just left the Turnigy decals on, Polished and waxed the hull after to remove any sticky residue.

First run didn't go to bad at my local pond.

Had to adjust the rudder passion as even with the trim set fully right it still didn't want to go straight.

Then I got that sorted and ran into Cooling issues, I think I must have kinked one of the pipes slightly as I couldn't see any water coming from the outlet on the side of the boat, And after a few minuets of back to back flat out straight line runs it kept cutting the power to come sort of safety mode only letting me have maybe 1/4 throttle to bring it back in.

Finally sorted that and the sun had moved to being directly in my eyes so I couldn't see F#CK all, But never the less I managed to get a sort video for you guys.

(Note: this was only 1/2 throttle then 3/4 throttle on the last straight as I couldn't see the boat)

Having some issues with the ESC no matter where the throttle trim is set the motor is always turning forwards or backwards and there seems to be no nutural spot, I'm out of ideas now other than maybe over heating 3/4 times caused damage inside the ESC ?

Anyhow i I ordered a new one from Amazon slightly more Ampage but it will do wpthe trick none the less.

Specs:  40A Watercooled Brushless Speed Controller

Current 43A, BEC: 3A, Programable timing 10/20/30, 2-4S Lipo capable.

While waiting for the ESC to arrive I removed all the cheap thin (2mm ID - 5mm OD) rubber cooling pipe work and replaced it with some larger (3mm ID - 7MM OD) silicone pipe work In the hope this help allow water to pass in and out of the boat faster therefor keeping motor and ESC temps lower, It also seems a lot stronger than the rubber pipe as standard and more resistant to kinking infact it doesn't really kink at all unless you do it on purpose and it's RED !!

I also removed the the grey anodised finish from all of the aluminium hardware and polished them back up to a near mirror finish.

New ESC turned up today :) Typical of Amazon I ordered a 40A Typical watered cooled heatshrunk speed controller and they sent me a 60A aluminium water cooled speed controller ? But it will do the job none the less so no complaints from me for now, Also in a strange turn of events I now have TWO Hobbyking Turnigy Centurion's.

The fate of the 2nd boat is unknown as of yet but here's a pic and look it's got the right colour stickers!

I actually kinda like the clean look with just the Turnigy stickers against the black hull, looks kinda stealthy - nice job! :good:

Cheers bud, Had so much more planned for these hull's wanted to give them both 32mm X 1.4pitch stainless or aluminium props, Aluminium dog drives, And then possibly up them from 3s to 4s now they both have nice new ESC's that can handle upto 4s.

But not everything goes to plan and today got a new pair of boats to tinker with so watch this space as the battle is still on and hopefully i can post some good videos of me n the misses racing at our local lake.

The White/Black boat mostly featured in this thread as it was my boat has gone to MSUK member "DUBZN1" & the Red/Black boat which wS my misses boat has gone to MSUK member "Smoothybb" Both where posted  out to them today.

Heres some final pics from me, And if either of you guys want to take over this thread feel free to update it as you have a blast with the boats and make your own changes to them.

(As for the lake in the video it's a old local chalk quarry famous for the "Arlesey New Brick" that struck a natural water spring in the 1980's and filled up over the course of a few weeks, It's honestly HUGE and super deep ! I have also run real boats and jetski's in the lake also.)

What and let everyone know I'm driving a girls boat......... no thank you.

Only joking, will get some footage up when I find somewhere to run it. Probably end with me swimming out to recover the boat!!

Just looking up mods/upgrades.......... 32mm x1.4 prop you say?......hmmmmmmmm

Ahaha believe me I've had my ass handed to me by that boat more that once aha, And yes for an upgrade prop you want to get a metal 32mm x 1.4 Pitch with a shaft diameter of 3.2mm which is also some times written down as 1/8" or 3.18mm, Theres plenty for sale on EBay and Amazon and even Honbyking, Hobbyking also sell lots of spares for the boat its self should you ever break anything.

Something like this,

and this

https://hobbyking.com/en_us/3-18mm-stainless-steel-dog-drive.html

also on of these M3 Prop Nuts off Amazon or eBay

Rc-Boat-1pc-M3-Thread-Bullet-Stainless-S

Not only would it look nice to have the silver metal dog drive, Upgrade prop, and bullet style prop but but it would also give massive improvements as the standard plastic props felx and warp a lot under load meaning there isn't a reliable constant pitch and they scuffnthenedges off very easily if your not careful, I think with the above on a small 4s would see 65mph without a doubt and if you didn't want to go that fast then go for the 30mm x 1.4 Metal prop instead as that's the same as what's currently on the boat only the one in the boat is plastic.
