Mitrab36
Cheers Gaz! Well its all stripped down to the bare bones right now. Ready for all the important jobs like greasing the axles. Opened up the rear one and its BONE DRY !!! Seriously Maverick, thats CRAP! Lashings of marine grease should keep it happy All the new parts are tidied up prepped and ready for painting. Will update with some pics soon.
nr73
My diffs were bone dry, they're all like that apparently. Fortunately, with the low rpmof this setup it's unlikely you'd do any real damage before a stripdown anyway. I packed mine with marine grease, along with the centre transfer case. Mitrab36
Update time. This crap weather is great for progress on projects! I managed to get everything cleaned up and prepped for painting. 1 coat of etch primer and 2 coats of Halfords satin black later..... Time to start the assembly. I thought I'd get the main chassis assembled first, then squared up and aligned before anything else. All going well so far. I just have to remember where everything went, with no plans it was a good job I took plenty of pics as it progressed.... lol
nr73
Great work yet again You've got me thinking now about making a different chassis for my Scout. Edited January 31, 2015 by Neil Robinson
Gaz!
As I said before, really is excellent work fella! Looking forward to seeing it all done
Andy20xe
do you fancy making another set of the chassis rails????!!!!
Mitrab36
Hi Andy Sorry mate. The're not a 5 min job. Simple enough to do yourself but allow a good few hours to get them right. That and there set for the mounting points how I needed them. Unless you were using the same shocks, batteries, same length links and making the exact same bumpers and mounts to fit the Dingo shell they wouldn't really be of much use to you to be honest. All you need is a hacksaw, some files and a drill (oh and a lot of patience) a diy jigsaw or grinder makes life easier but not essential. If you do all 4 at once like I did, you know they will all be the same. The best advice I could give you is to not start with cutting metal and making it fit, start with drawing up a full scale template using the existing parts and body your going to use. Its much easy and quicker to make changes on paper before you start than to find out something won't work after spending all afternoon making it...... Mitrab36
Progress update. Most of the chassis is now assembled, motor + center diff installed and the links fitted to the chassis. Everything is fitting a treat so far. Time to fit the freshly greased axles and shocks. Also if you look closely I've got a few of the led's fitted in the bumper, still need work but I'll continue them when I get busy with the electrics.
nr73
That looks superb so far, can't wait to see this finished. Been thinking about how I would make a crawler chassis if I did one sometime. I wouldn't go for a scaler type setup, it would be more spidery crawler type chassis. Anyway keep the updates coming, great job!
Mitrab36
Go on Neil, get making that new chassis. I've collected a few spares along the way and also thinking about what I fancy next, liking the super class crawlers....... no frills ultimate crawling ability meets mad max ! Mitrab36
Well the chassis and electrics are pretty much completed now. Not that you can see much of the electrics, I managed to fine a nice little project box at Maplins. Being translucent, I can still see the led's on the BEC and RX so I know all is well. As you can see from the last pic. Its a very snug fit in an attempt to centralise and lower the mass. Some of you will notice a red plug coming from the blue box, that will link to the led's on the body shell later. If anyones interested here is a diagram I drew up before I dived into the electrics.
nr73
Good idea with that project box. Looking nearly finished now by the looks of it! Been thinking about the scout chassis today...thinking about making a chassis that's as narrow as possible and the main limiting factor seems to be the motor and transfer case. Must be why most of the comp crawlers seem to use motors on the axle. I'd like to get the shocks laid down a little more so the chassis can twist and contort really easily. Jakes2514
I love the detail and effort you are putting into this!! great job so far man!
Mitrab36
Thanks everyone. Neil. Have you though about making up a wedge shaped mount / spacer for transmission housing? If you put it between the chassis plate and the housing it would rotate the unit so the motor was sitting above the transmission and narrowing the width it would need. That or make a motor mounting plate to sit the motor above the transmission. So, progress. Managed to get a bit of time on the body. Simple colour schemes (1 or 2 colous) seem to suit crawlers better, so I settled on a nice bright red with satin black details. As the Dingo body kit came with a set of lexan light buckets I thought I would give them a go. The main LED is a 10mm jobbie that was advertised for a rc plane ultra bright landing gear set. And bloody bright it is, not smd bright but very good. Below that is a 5mm for the side lights, They were epoxy'd in then painted black on the rear to stop any light bleeding out the back and illuminating the shell from inside. The painting of the shell was very simple, as were decals and fitting the cage, all standard Axial stuff. As you can see I masked off the lights ready for the lexan buckets. Axial supply you with a handy mask for just this task. Then the lights were simply fitted with double sided foam tape. I think they have come out ok for a first attempt. nr73
Top job once again I honestly don't know how you can be so patient, I'm the impatient type and I find it hard to slow down and do something properly. The thing with rotating the motor/gearbox on the scout is it moves the motor higher up, and the motor's one of the heaviest components in it. As it is, it's an ok compromise. If it's possible to buy axles suitable for a crawler, where the motor can be mounted directly on the axle like the super class seem to, I think I could build the rest of the chassis. Maybe that's a summer project.
Tomlad
Wow well done mate. I will be deffainatly be getting a scout now at some point. Your build is really inspiring.

Mitrab36
Well its finally finished...... for now lol All the lights are wired up and are switched on / off by ch3 via a simple turnigy servo switch. The arches are mounted a few mm higher and spread open a little to allow for the 2.2 wheels of the scout. Hope you like the final look.
