  1. Old post I know, but google is date blind and so makes ANY post relevant for those searching for relevant information. Quoting "Igottabeme" @ rcuniverse "The volcano 18 is the same as the himoto and iron track 1/18's. Asiatees is one place to go to for upgraded parts. Just search for himoto and iron track parts. That being said I use a helion animus spur gear and 13t hot racing steel pinion from the dromidas. You get two spur gears for the price of one volcano spur and its pretty much a direct fit. Just remember the volcano spur is a mod .1 gear and the animus spur is mod .6 two different gears. Redcat does make steel input gears for the center drive shaft. The way the motor mount and gear cover is designed does not allow to much room for pinion changes without modification. I run my brian deegan metal mulisha (himoto tricer) (volcano 18 just has extended body posts) with a tacon 3800kv brushless motor, hobbywing 25a esc , aluminium outdrives, aluminum center driveshaft, volcano 18 tires, wltoys a959 steel driveshafts, animus spur, hot racing pinion, mg90s servo everything else stock and have not had to many problems (except while trying 3s lipo bad idea different story)." personally I used metal internal diff gears from a metal wltoys a9x9 diffrential, the a9x9 diffrential is slightly larger and uses larger bearings. I used a metal driveshaft for the a9x9 but just used a dremel to shorten it a bit as its a little longer. I used a metal Himoto ring gear. And metal animus spur gear made by hot racing. For a Full Metal Maverick! But, the best upgrade for cheap is to just use a 50,000 rpm Chi Hai motor. It has ball bearings, wet formed magnets, carbon brushes, & anodised red. Its available on Aliexpress and RCMart for under a U.S. $10 spot! Runs on the stock ESC and makes the Maverick a much more enjoyable , faster and more powerful buggy. Now I wrote "buggy", Chi Hai makes even better motors that work better in my Truggy, monster truck and Desert Runner (i have all the 1:18 Mavericks). For the Monster Truck look at the Chi Hai CHR-370SD, its a 26,000rpm, wet formed NdFeB magnets, carbon brushes, ball bearings, anodised titanium, and it's a power house! For the Truggy look at the Gold colored CHR-K370WD it is similar to the red ChiHai but it is the High Torque version. It has NdFeB wet formed magnets and can run on 3s! For NOTHING BUT SPEED RUNS look to the Pink anodised Chi Hai CHR-RS370WP, it has 65,000rpm, NdFeB wet mags, ball bearings and is a ridiculously fast motor on 2s but can handle 3s for just insane speed. I do not work for Chi Hai, just had incredible luck using their motors. I even stuffed the Red one in a 1/28 WLToys K989 using the stock 2in1 esc (upgraded the onboard capacitor) and it is faster with more power than any brushkess k989 i have come up against! Good luck to anyone messing around with microscale RC. Its a blast!
  2. Cheers! That's the CORRECT answer! Thank you for that! Beat me to it! I know old post but Google is date blind so old posts come up as new information for many that search. So trolls stop bashing for posting on old topics! (Nobody here, just in general, 😂) Anyways: For a cheep but cheerful, (easily faster than my 4700kv 2040 BL motor) I added ONLY a brushed red anodized ChiHai 7.4v 50,000rpm 370 ball bearing motor from AliExpress. It was only $8GBP shipped and arrived in the states in 10 days. It DRASTICALLY improved power, torque & top speed was ridiculous in my Maverick iON XB! I had to force cram the same make & model motor into my XK 1/28 k989, but again it drastically improved performance! No ESC upgrades (except cap in the k989, more later) , no battery changes, no new radio or servo or alloy parts, and no lipo alarms, just a lil high performance ChiHai 370 brushed and the cars came alive. I have two 1/28 XK k989 cars, one has a 7500kv 1510 BL and the k989 with the brushed ChiHai is so much faster and more powerful. I did upgrade the Capacitor in the k989's stock 2in1 RX/ESC to a 470 microfarad, but that's because it would have voltage drop and slow the car down every 20 or 30 seconds. That was an extra $2.70GBP. Hope this helps anyone wanting to upgrade, it's a direct drop in upgrade for the Maverick. No drilling or different screws or pinions. Put the motor heatsink on, and the motor and ESC stay cool, maybe barely warm.
  3. The a979b pinion should, as long as you for sure have the "B" version with the 540 motor in it. I used the pinion on several motors like a Tamiya Torque Tuned and Sport tuned, as well as a HobbyKing Trackstar sensored 13.5 brushless. Is the Brushless motor you have a 540/3650? Or is it one of the smaller brushless many use like a 2030 or 2450? I like a 2845 for the a9x9 series. Its a lil smaller than a 540 so lighter and makes for a lower center of gravity but it isn't SO SMALL that it lacks punch and so it wont cog! I just finished rebuilding my first a979. Im trying to find the right "turn" brushed motor for these cars! I'm going try a bunch since I can't really find anything about recommend brushed motor types. I have an Axial 27t, HPI FireBolt 15t, im using a Tamiya Torque Tuned out of a TT-02 kit and it works very well with the stock WLToys a9x9b ESC/Radio. The car its in is mostly stock except ball bearings and oil shocks. Im going to also try some old school brushed like Twisters, Trinity Monster, Bolink, Team Associated, Kyosho 240ws, etc... I need to find what brushed motor "Turn" works best!
