  1. Evening all, I used to race buggies many (many, MANY) moons ago as a teenager and as I head towards my midlife crisis I've decided to have a bash at the R/C game again. I've dabbled with a few buggies on and off for fun between then and now but nothing too serious. All the clubs within what I feel is a 'doable' distance are indoor on road affairs offering Tamiya M Chasis, 1:10 Touring Cars and GT12 races. I plan on a visit to the club this week but am a litle impatient so thoguht I'd ask you lot some questions IF all works out I think I've decided on entering the world of RC on-road racing by via the M-Chassis route. From what I can gather this should be the best way for me to get back into the swing of things and learn some race craft. Is my thinking correct? Secondly is it worth releasing the moths from my wallet and getting a V2 R chassis or should I be looking at getting a standard kit and learn how to tinker? I'm unsure whether the initial outlay is a false economy. Budget isn't really an issue but I don't wan't to burn the pennies just for the hell of it. Appreciate your thoughts. Cheers
  2. Well the replacement arrived so I've been itching to get started on the build, I finally got around to it this evening. Got around to testing the radio gear and it looks like the supplied servo is dead. Going to be a long ol' build this!
  3. Urgh I missed a day. Yesterday my Neo Fighter Today a Kamtec body for my Astute restoration
  4. Looks like it has all been sorted today which is great. Should expect a replacement to arrive on Wednesday. Better cancel all plans for the Bank Holiday weekend!
  5. Too many Saturday mornings spent in Beatties toy shop in Aylesbury in the '80s led to me falling in love with the box of the Tamiya Astute. My dad grabbed me one in '90/91. Raced it a little behind the garden centre at Toddington with a school mate. I was the uncool one at that stage as if I recall, if you raced you didn't own a Tamiya. Digging the Astute out of the loft a few years back kicked off the desire to get started again.
  6. Ran the old RC10 B4 for the first time in a good couple years. Not sure the batteries are in the best state after a few years of storage/
  7. ModelSport. Fingers crossed hear back from them tomorrow else I'll have to start chasing by phone. Stav
  8. Ordered a Tamiya Neo Fighter just before the bank holiday weekend for no other reason than an attack of trigger finger and a desire to play "hide it from the wife". Since then I've managed to convince myself that the model was cheap (excluding all of the other gubbins required) and therefore the Mrs doesn't need to know about the latter. Also it's a fine start for my 3 year old daughter right? Sadly though its been "lost" by the courier so waiting to hear about a replacement. No building for me for another week .
  9. Ha! Well there's not much to take photos of as it's....well, well dismantled but point taken so I shall get on it later today
  10. Finally got off my backside this evening and started the restoration job on an old Tamiya Astute I received as a birthday present many many moons ago ('90 I think). A few bits broken and missing. I've ordered a new Repo body from Kamtec and am going to see if I can get the Super Astute Knuckles to fit/work. Beyond that I think it's all pretty much there. I seem to remember breaking a part on the front suspension when taking to to school (I left in '94 so was a while ago). I think 20 years is enough for it to be broken! Fingers crossed the ol' girl will run again. Stav
  11. Hi all, I'm returning to the hobby after a good few years away and am contemplating my next move. Am I right in thinking (after a good read of this thread) that the danger points (ok possibly power phrasing) for Lipo are: 1. When charging 2. When storing in an 'unsafe' state, e.g. fully charged 3. Any time a cell is damaged? The only reason I ask is that I'm seriously considering Lipo as a power source and am looking at taking a new purchase away with me on hols which involves a couple hours travel by ferry. Oh btw I'm a proper nervous person so am generally uber stupidly careful about stuff (nervous as suffer proper panic/anxiety disorders). I'd hate to be that bloke with a burning car on a ferry

    Help Me

Cheers for the replies guys (and the PM Sean). Good food for thought! Got a couple of weeks to make up my mind before I've got the do$h in my pocket. Something that might steer the decision is the noise thing. Lots of open space around here but still on the hunt for a suitable bashing location for a nitro. Leccy will mean more frequent running as I can hop to the local park.

    Help Me

I've always had electric models so fancy something a little different. Charging and looking after batteries always feels is to me like filling the car with diesel. I do a lot of miles and it's the job I hate most. I like the idea of...well a car that I fill with fuel as opposed to buggering about with charging and discharging batteries. Modern battery maintenance feels like hard work. Nitro maintenance feels ... well mechanical and manly and will annoy the wife when there's dirt and grime all over the dining room table. Imagine being a 35 with a mental age of 15 with Chrimbo money on your pocket and parents to annoy!

That's on the list for a deeper look!

    Help Me

That Sawback looks pretty cool. I keep thinking of working on the kit love with a cheapo Tamiya kit (I'm a child of the 80's) and then maybe something Nitro. Would love to club race but there seems to be very little off road within a reasonable distance (40 mins / hour of Leighton Buzzard). Always the same...think you've got your minds sorted and then you get the cash in your pocket and it all goes to ....
