  1. Do you fix and repair? Soon to be a lucrative business keeping the highly specialised cars on the road. I should imagine modifying will soon become a thing. The Twizzy scene is already enjoying motor and battery swaps with ECU upgrades an alike.
  2. Ignore me, my fat thumbs and luddite brain and read my next post.
  3. The battery is incredibly weak on these, change the battery for another 2 cell lipo and you'll be good!
  4. That looks awesome, crawling is not my thing really but I appreciate the detail and the patience you have when constructing. How waterproof are the servos and RX equipment?
  5. Check out 18650.com too for cells, they have some good deals and won't sell cheap Chinese/cast off cells. Soldering is ok, I solder hot with up to 380C on the tip and have a sponge next me to cool straight away, if the solder allows then I have soldered at 320C. The tops are not too bad to solder as these stand off from the interior fabric of the cell but the bottom is in contact and is where the damage can occur. Scratch the bottom of the cell with a file or alike, clean the cell with solvent and solder as quick as you can. I try for less than 2 seconds contact time, if it doesn't work or isn't in the correct place, stop and cool the cell and try again. Lead solder is better too, just don't inhale. 😜
  6. 1/10th scale ish. It was my rough guess at its weight, just stuck it on the scales and its just over 4kg without the batt and running gear so probably more like 6kg+ when finished.
  7. Please let me know how your pack works out, I was thinking that at the very least a couple of 2S emergency packs would fit in mine and my sons car and would still be dirt cheap compared to shop bought packs. How do you connect them together, do you have a spot welder or solder them?
  8. Hi All, I finished doing some checks over the weekend to ensure the gear selection, motor and battery are compatible. I never thought it would be quite so involved to do a conversion, most people just whack a motor and esc in and off they go. To double check my fag packet calcs were correct I used Excel (yes, I am an Excel freak) and reworked all my gearing, the motor selection and pulley calcs to ensure I was correct to within a few decimal places. Without boring you all too much, I have attached my workings sheets. You are more than welcome to use it for your projects if required or just rip it to bits and use the parts of it you need. I should make a more user friendly one at some point. In summary - The NT-16 Nitro equivalent is approx. 950Watts in electrical terms, to get the gearing of the motor in the 30-40,000rpm range with the 3S battery I wanted to select something like a 3000kv motor (just so happened it has the potential for 1900Watts). The final gear ratio of the standard gearing is between 10 and 14 for the first and second gears, the new ratio with the belt system gets me in at 11 with a top theoretical speed of 43mph. The 3S battery is 2.2Ah and 35C so should be good for 77A up to 143A burst power. I am hoping for some performance from this with a acceleration and a top speed that would rival the old nitro engine! Total Spend so far - £109.38 Still need a controller, my Kyosho is on the blink so another £40ish to complete the build. RC Conversion Sheet.xlsx
  9. Hi, I am currently experimenting with various 18650 Li-Ion cells (are you defining Lipos as pouch cells?) that I have acquired from ebikes and alike. The Samsung INR cells are far better than the others although capacity is a mere 2000mAh whereas some of the unknown brands are tested at a capacity of 2200 or more. I think the discharge is only about 5C though which would make sense for the 250W ebike motor. I was looking over the weekend at some of the newer cells available, the 20700 and 21700 with discharge rates of 30C continuous and 65C bursts. The capacity is also up to 4000mAh and for £5-8 per cell, I think I could make a DIY pack for less than a similar 3s 4000mAh pack.
  10. Hi all, Just wondered how many of you make your own battery packs. I have made a few prototype 2s and 3s packs, they work well but I dont think the lithium cells are the greatest for discharge rates. I was going to order some new 3000mah cells with 30c discharge just to see how they perform. Cheers, Pete
  11. Hello, Good to hear father and daughter getting into RC cars, are you doing the spannering or teaching and letting her do some? My son is getting into RC cars, we have a few now and he always helps with spannering and wants to learn. Pete
  12. I'm working on the electricity distribution networks, planning and developing them for the future needs (mass electrification of the UK). The networks pretty mashed up at the moment so we are busy fools.
  13. I can't help thinking this is the start of personal tracking by the government and once permissions are given you'll never be able to retract as it'll be in your interest of keeping you safe. I'll let my wife download it first!
  14. Yes, slowly realising nitros aren't appropriate for the playing fields anymore! I think if my conversion goes well, the other nitros may follow suit or at least the other CEN. The Tribe is too reliable at the moment to convert just yet and I love the smell of nitro in the morning.
  15. What is the plan with it now you know the make and model? Full restoration or mod and make good?
