RC Kit Cars

Can't find a specific forum to discuss Kit Cars, so wanted to start one...  So here we are:

With a history of models, planes, engineering, moving parts, and such other things in the blood, I knew I had to do some RC cars before I had kids..!

After some decent research I decided the 'Lunch Box' was the ultimate classic RC first build.  So I built one (classic colour scheme, some mods, see previous posts).
And.. Then I built another one; heavily modified.

Thus, following two Lunch Box builds I am looking for my next build:
But research requires a set of rules; as follows:
    - 1:10 / 1:12 Off-Road Kit RC (has to have the joy of building out the box - any old plod can get RTR)
    - Electric NiMh 7.2v Stick / 540 Brushed Motor (The best of old tech)
    - Fun, Fast & Some-what Rugged (strip down required on annual basis only).

I have found the following models for consideration so far:
    Monster Truck:
Lunch Box / Midnight Pumpkin (Another!)
            Super Clod / Bullhead (4WD)
            Agrios (4WD)
    Rock Racer:
            Axial Wraith (4WD)
    Multi-Surface Rally:
            Lancia Integrale (TT-02 R) (4WD)
    Buggy:
        Kyosho:
            Sand Master / NeXXt
        Associated:
            RC10 Classic / RC10 Classic World's Car
        Team C:
EP Buggy Minion TR04 / Jekyll
        HoBao:
            H2 Pro
        Tamiya:
            Rising Fighter
            Neo Fighter Buggy
            Mad Bull
            Sand Rover
            Neo Scorcher (4WD)
            The Hornet
            Nova Fox
            Fast Attack Vehicle
            Sand Viper
            Gravel Hound Dog (4WD)
            The Frog
            Dark Impact (4WD)
            Hot Shot (4WD) *
            Super Hot Shot (4WD)
            Sand Scorcher
            Egress (4WD)
[Artist Platform - Wild Willy - WR-02 etc]

       [stadium Truggy:]
            [blitzer Beetle / Stadium Blitzer]
            [Team Associated 10T4.2]

[Rock Crawlers, Trail Trucks, and HGV's have been ruled out, but you can try and convince me if you want!]

[square Brackets mean its been ruled out]

*'s Means someone has give a car a thumbs up

Don't want to hear arguments about going brushless and Lipo.  Don't want to discuss RTR, I want to build.

If I have missed a forum, please shout and laugh at me, but I did search for one, promise

Firstly tell me what I have missed.

Secondly tell me if I need to tweak any rules.

Thirdly, and most importantly, what to dismiss...

Have a look at the Axial scx10 dingo and wrangler g6 too, and maybe the RC4WD Trailfinder 2 and Gelande 2.

These are all scale trail trucks which will be fun to build, are hugely capable machines with hour plus run times, and have a massive amount of hop ups and scale accesories available.

Word of warning though, if you do get bitten by the scaling bug, it can get expensive fast lol

Do they still make the Falcon? Probably all round my best and fastest out the box tamiya car. The Hotshot 2 was great and a joy to build. But the 540 motor was too weak for a 4x4.

I don't deny that these would be fun to build, and I get the appeal of the Rock Crawlers and trail trucks, I am particularly enjoying the looks of the GMade SAWBACK, but I am looking for an element of speed and grind.  So I removed these from the line up...

Thanks for capturing this though.  (I have added speed to my brief).

For brushed and NiMH the speed is going to be very low. Why do you want to build a car so much? Most people strip their cars and rebuild them so you will build it at some point.

No re-re-Falcon's, and I think the only legacy of the Falcon still purchasable is the beefed up and bulked out Blitzer Beetle...

4WD 540 noted.

I want something I can take care building out the box, run for a year or more (having a lot of fun) without having to strip down every 2nd day out.  I don't mind the odd thing breaking, but rugged and fast is essential.

After either a fatal accident, or a medal for long service, Ill either strip for parts or rebuild after a 12 months and set off again.

I envisage a wall of long standing hero's.

I don't mind spending money on a piece of chassis that will last forever, but I don't want to spend money on Lipo and brushless.

Call me old fashioned, but I want the best of old technology (however I don't mind a bit of new age design).

Most rcs break and parts wear down. Striping and cleaning them is all part of the hobby. Most cars need there shocks refilled every so often and their diff's. The tamiya kits are very basic and really only a small step up from toygrade RCS. Have a look at the 1/10 racing buggy's as they are all kits but some require saddle packs so it may be a no.

An annual strip down?? Too long to wait, IMO, should be stripping and checking more often. No RC ever complained about being well maintained and serviced ;)

OK, get where you are coming from, but lets say heavy usage between strip downs:

Say Build in the winter,

4 good months of mid-spring into Summer running: Re-oil and brush up.

     Rebuild in the mid-Autumn

Few runs in the winter (depending on conditions and frequency rebuild say 1-2 times)

Wet winter months shelved (oiled and brushed off before and after shelving).

I think your putting a bit much into this, these are just big boys toys. You clean it when its dirty and strip it after and long hard run. If you rebuild it all the time things are less lightly to break and the car will run by far better.

When you say fast what do you mean by fast? 70mph? 20mph? You will get waaaayyy more speed and power from a brushless setup and lipo than with a nihm and brushed motor.
