  1. Upgraded the pinion from 12t to 14t experienced no overheating issues with the motor

14t broke fitted 16t went out for a run yesterday open area on grass and boy does it shift to the point where it's uncontrollable, at speed it was doing wheelies and rolled over a few times. I think the rear needs to be more weighted down, although I had removed the rear tyre off the back which may have played a part.

Also on 16t the ESC and motor was really hot to the point where I presume the safety cut off kicked in to prevent damage so couldn't use until temps dropped. 5 mins later was back in action.

Safe bet would be to stick with 14t or 15t? And if going beyond that you would definitely need to fit cooling to the motor and a more robust fan on the heatsink

  2. A month out of action as pinion broke, took the car out for a  run yesterday with a surpass hobby 14t pinion. Speed runs on gravel and grass was great fun! But the pinion broke again, lost one tooth!

Seems if you do high speed runs and braking things break!

What brand pinions are people using? anything better out there?

Just a headache having to strip it down again to replace the pinion again!

  3. Spoke to ftx technical support who advised it is normal where the left wheel will not turn as much/fully lockout in comparison to the right wheel.

The chap I spoke to said it's quite common not just with ftx models

Also I think it's mentioned here or elsewhere the servo saver link/horn at full lock hits the blue motor mount, which also will affect the left wheel from fully locking out

Have you checked the servo saver? Pointedscarab had a similar issue on page 2 of this thread - rebuilt the servo saver and all good.

Thanks! Tightened up the silver servo saver nut which has significantly improved the steering,

However steering to the right works perfectly fully locks out whereas the left the steering throw isn't as much compared to the right, is this normal?

  5. Replaced the servo with a 25kg DS3225 but still have the same issue the wheels are hardly turning.

I haven't used the car for a while, last used was on grass and I didn't bother cleaning it, could something within the steering/wheels, hub, knuckle etc be seized?

    Thoughts would be appreciated

  6. Replaced the pinion to 14t I dare not going any higher with the stock tyres, they ballooned so much to the point I thought they'll explode! On 6s

What are the signs of a failed servo?, noticed it turns ok to the left but to the right there is not much movement

Any recommendations for a cheap Chinese alternative?

  7. Made a costly mistake, had to replace the stock pinion gear so removed the hex screws, all were removed but one! Applied too much force and the hex bit broke into the head screw!

Was left with no choice but to try and drill it out, the head of the hex broke off which left the thread part of the screw in the blue motor mount!. Tried also drilling this out but failed and has damaged the internal thread of the mount 😞

So long story short need a new motor mount £20! Is the cheapest i could find! And a new hex screw

In hindsight not sure if it would have helped as it was solid likely with excessive threadlock, should have sprayed some wd40 and some heat to it

Lesson learnt! When reassembling is it necessary to apply a tiny amout of blue lock thread to the hex screws and the pinion gear?

  8. After several speed runs on 6s,  large open grass one off the tyres has split, exposing the insulation, managed to put it all back in with no issue thereafter. Would it help if i glue the tyre on the rim?

More urgently, twice fitted a new esc fan and both have failed, either debri has got in or something causing the blade to break. Last ran the car without the esc fan the heatsink got pretty hot!

Any recommendations for a durable alternative?

And finally the stock pinion failed on me lost some of the teeth sheered 😞

is this to be expected? Given that i have been doing long continuous speed runs?

I bought a 2nd chassis for less than a set of wheels for it costs and just picked up bits along the way. Now have a HW max6 esc, 3670 2650kv motor and a skyrc tx,

I just need battery boxes ( going to run it on 4s till I fit a larger motor ) and a body but the wheelbase is 340mm, which is a weird size for bodies it seems.

no idea how much faster the dr8 will go but the tires are almost dinner plates already on a 15t, so it won’t take much more to rip them off.

I will buy some belted off road tires so that issue goes away.

I tend to show the misses what I just spent the money on, that way she can’t say no, she can whinge and whine but once it’s in my hands, not much she can do about it!! 😎

Any recommendations for belted tyres, don't want to spend too much. I use mine primarily on grass in a large open area

I’ve not noticed the motor getting hot so far and even after about 20 speed runs it was only warm, looking at what others run on a 4274 motor, we’re a long way off stressing it but I’ve also decided the DR8 isn’t for outright speed, so I’ve been building another 1/8 buggy based speed machine, road tires etc, so the DR8 will stay with the smaller pinions and try the larger ones on the buggy.

the tires did balloon on the speed runs but not as bad as I thought, they did a good job considering they aren’t ideal for 60mph+

Mrs will kill me if i buy another rc car just for outright speed haha so I'll have to stick with the DR8 what max size pinion would you recommend without blowing out the stock tyres?

Will add a heatsink and fan to be on the safe side

Not yet. I destroyed the 15t pinion as it wasn’t tight enough and then rounded off the motor screws, so drilled them out and fitted stainless bolts and the 17t pinion.

hopefully I’m over at the runway later this week 👍

Do let me know how you get on, thinking of going with 18T or 22T but concerned the stock tyres may blow out!

If i do upgrade the pinion I'm looking to also add a heatsink and 40mm fan to keep the motor temps down

You have to unscrew the two pillow balls out, put them into the carrier then screw them back on to the arms 👍🏻

Yeah lol figured it out thanks, I was trying to use brute force to get it in but failed haha

    All sorted now thanks! 😊
