  1. So rebuilt both my kids Quantums over the past week, shocks, diffs everything shimmed and solid. Took them out an hour or so ago, 1 lasted 5 mins (my fault - bevel gear was not meshed on pin correctly in rear diff housing) losing drive to rear but the other one has a weird ESC issue. Sometimes when it goes to pull away, it stutters seems to falter then will either launch or stop. Seems to happen much more often if starting on a hill or anything that might tax the motor more than a flat launch. If it stops then trigger does nothing, you have to power cycle the ESC. If it goes well, it goes... Anybody had this issue, bogs down and stops or bogs down and then launches? I am worried the ESC is playing up...

  3. Hi, excuse ignorance. Bought vrc to use with my noble nb4 which directly connected as a controller but quickly went back to sticks so now can't play vrc! Will this work ok with a Futaba r304sb receiver? Does it power the receiver from the usb bus? If it's just a plug and play setup I'll take one [emoji1303] Sent from my DUK-L09 using Tapatalk
  4. Back end bounced nearly as high as it was dropped from with stock oil in both of the kids Quantum's. What length shocks are they in the quantum, I think I'm measuring 90mm eye to eye? Edit: pulled one off the truck and is 100mm not 90mm - now to find a decent upgrade...
  5. I've just dropped in a 3mm nut to bring them out a touch but the shock springs are now deformed permanently from being held under pressure so long. The shocks are pretty naff anyway, can't get them set to stop the chassis bottoming out if dropped from more than a foot and that's with multiple oil weights I've tried, up to 75wt. May have to upgrade them [emoji1303] Sent from my DUK-L09 using Tapatalk
  6. Kids are having fun with these, when its dry enough! Nothing broken yet. Rear shock springs do not clear the rear upper arms though which I think is poor. The springs are pushed backwards as they sit against the upper arms as there is not enough clearance. I came here to check if anyone else has the same issue but I can clearly see it in the OP's pics too.
  7. Cheers, that makes me feel a bit more comfortable with the choice!! 👍
  8. This might be a daft question but my experience is with Nitro and before that analogue speed controllers - spent months polishing those bad boy copper contacts in my youth... I've ordered 2 of the XT's for my lads. The plan to get my old savage rebuilt and get them interested has worked and now we are all joining the local track/club. These are ideal to get them used to driving and learning some skills. Is there any way either through the remote or the ESC to limit max speed? just concerned they are pretty quick out of the box on 2s for kids... Just been through the manual - does the throttle EPA work in the same way as it would for a standard servo and limit throw therefore speed on the ESC?
  9. Just a word of warning. Whoever owns the land has made a very conscious and costly effort to keep people out. Where you could once clearly walk over the trading estate, there are now huge concrete blocks blocking entry. The small gate round the side of the estate is now replaced my a huge solid steel fence and gate. We made the decision to go elsewhere as it was clear we should not be attempting to get in, despite travelling some distance to go bash there.
  10. Its been a long time coming but finally have some time to update on the build so here goes!Started off with these 2nd hand bulkheads off E-Bay - crowns and pinions were in good shape so decided to rebuild and shim these rather than my older diffs off the 25. Stripped down and thoroughly cleaned out - I am pleased I did so, the third pic shows a chunk of steel inside the diff housing - that would have been fatal... The bevel gears were 100% perfect so this was left over from a previous rebuild - couldn't have been run much afterwards as this would have caused damage for sure. Both diffs shimmed and rebuilt - worked out very nicely with very little play. Went for 10k wt front and 30k wt rear diff oil.I had 2 sets of bearings from RC Bearings in the UK - bargain at £18/set - one sealed and one set unsealed. Every bearing will be replaced in the build - all external facing will be sealed. Some parts started arriving from the Far East:2 x JX CLS6322HV 21KG - High Voltage Servo's - Overkill for throttle but for £19 they are an absolute steal. They are so quick and powerful on 8.4v (and 6v!) - I was genuinely shocked. These are the first digital servo's I have ever seen yet alone fired up. Steering servo mounted along with alloy steering upgrade and bearing upgrade over stock bushes: Hit my first major issue when building up the front end. As I had upgraded to the quick access bulkhead, I only had one of the newer upper arm braces and the old stock 25 braces are much wider and do not fit. I could have purchased the new ones but stock was thin and they were orange... So I got the file out and trimmed down the original braces to fit. A touch of purple paint pen (not a perfect match but good enough) and it fitted fine. Second image below shows the correct brace, the old brace and then my filed down version. Quick mock up of the chassis - she looked absolutely huge to me at this point! Not sure if this was a result of using the new bulkhead but the upper arm rods had far too much play between the bumper points that hold them in place. I'm not totally happy with this mod but it will do for now. I drilled out the bumper plate and bolted in an M4 hex bolt to close the gap: Managed to pick up some Innovative RC dogbones from a very kind forum member here - Thanks Baj! Added an o-ring or two and they sit very nicely:Now the next issue raised its head. The fuel tank guard screw holes are higher placed on the XL chassis. The fuel tank with its proud bottom end would not sit low enough to mount. Decided to cut away (drill and file) the guard to allow the proud section to drop through. This just about gave me enough clearance to mount the tank: Thanks for reading!!
  11. Hi all, on the look out for a few Savage bits: 3 speed gearbox, preferably whole unit from a later model X or XL. I have the original 25 box without the incremental improvements over time so upgrading means replacing everything anyway. Adjustable engine mount. I know Nova did one but there were more 3rd party adjustable mounts so the engine position could be shifted. Let me know if you have anything! Ta Sent from my DUK-L09 using Tapatalk
  12. I think we take the entrance to the trading estate on the left, the turning before where you marked. Probably just park up there and walk over the bank on the right separating the estate and the bash spot. Looks like I'm definitely good for Saturday from about 12pm. If anybody else is up for joining let us know [emoji1303][emoji1303]
  13. Dropped you a PM bud. Going up depends on new parts arriving before the weekend and getting the truck sorted, then getting a pass out from the other half but either shouldn't be a problem... hopefully!
  14. Thinking about heading up here on the weekend, its about 40 mins away from me but am really struggling to find anywhere more local to bash my nitro. Has anybody been recently, is it still accessible?
  15. https://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/160090 Labelled as 'forged'. They should apparently be cheaper than the previous machined sets but time will tell how reliable... Nice to see new parts coming from HPI at last anyway.
  16. Need some help, stripped the center gearbox, replacing all bearings etc. On re-assembly the second gear wobbles and am not sure if this is right. Bearing is sat correctly and assembled as per the manual.I've recorded a mini YouTube video to show the play, does anyone know if this is normal? It's a 2 speed original Savage 25 gearbox, stock. Cheers
  17. So after several weeks graft the garage is finally sorted and moved the Savage bits in last night. The garage has always been damp, initially thought this was coming through the floor but then I spotted damage to the inside of the roof tiles above where teh moisture wouldappear on the floor. These are asbestos/cement tiles so had to be careful but repaired with some flashing. Several heavy downpours and not a spot of leakage or damp anywhere. Confident now it will stay dry.Started looking this:Spiders Everywhere:Midway through:A Vice! Always wanted a vice! Essential tool working on RC cars in my past life...After sealing and painting the floor, walls, fixing the leak in the roof and expanding foam filler around the roof edges, putting up shelves, cleaning everywhere (clearing all cobwebs and spider nests), sorting through every tool, screw, nut and bolt it's done:How long it will stay as organised as this is another matter but right now it's a great space.Obligatory Kit Pic:These are most of the parts I've accumulated, still waiting on the clutch, engine, wheels and bits for the throttle linkage mod.Cannot believe how tiny the FS-BS6 receiver is, original HPI receiver for comparison.Definitely have a few hours to myself this afternoon so will start with rebuilding and shimming the diffs. Finally getting started!
  18. Just posted this up on the savage forums but thought some people over here (particularly Savage and other HPI owners) would be interested: I have posted a message in my build log but to those that haven't read it - some interesting news I got from HPI in reply to a moaning e-mail I sent about lack of availability of parts, in particular replacements for 'glass' differentials Specifically in response to my diff problems or lack of availability of replacements they said:The sintered differential parts you enquired about, we have had several batches of stock but are currently sold out. More are expected in the next few weeks. The Machined Bulletproof differentials are an item that was affected by the factory closure in Taiwan. It has taken us much longer than we would have liked, but we have found an alternative supplier that can provide these at a quality we expect from a HPI Racing product. A large batch is due to hit the warehouse in August. We hopefully also have a new third option on the way for the Crown gear and Pinion that came about from our extensive search for alternatives, these we will be looking to announce shortly.Potential new Bevel & Crowns? Sounds good to me!Full reply below - warning LONG MESSAGE!! Lots of info here and pretty positive for HPI's future in the new owner's hands. FULL REPLY MESSAGE:Thank you for contacting HPI Racing. Thank you for your patience. We apologise for the delay in replying. HPI Racing as a brand has gone through some major changes since Vestergaard took over and we would like to outline below what they were and our challenges moving forward. All our work is with the aim of making HPI Racing a sustainable and reliable business with the focus on the long term future of the brand and its customers. Detailing everything going on right now is impossible but the main things are: The rebuilding process is very different from the previous times the HPI Racing brand has changed ownership. It is a completely new start up. No systems, staff or internal logistics were transferred in the sale which has meant that HPI Racing, as a company and as a brand, is truly rebuilding from the ground up. Over the last 9-10 months HPI Racing and Vestergaard have worked hand in hand to start that rebuilding process. Existing inventory and body production machinery in the UK has been transferred to Vestergaard Groups extensive distribution warehouse in Viborg, Denmark. The Vestergaard Group will handle all logistics for HPI Racing and Viborg will be its new central warehouse location. Manufacturing: HPI Manufacturing ( HPI’s own factory or HPIM for short) has been up and running for about 6 months now. Cars and Spares are shipping from our China factory. Not everything is available but we are working hard to get everything currently considered as on sale, produced asap. HPIM and other partners will continue to manufacture the same HPI Racing products, with the same QC to keep the same level of specification we expect in HPI Racing products. Cars in normal production schedule: E-10, RS4 Sport 3, Jumpshots, Venture, Savage XS, Wheely & Crawler King, Micro RS4, Savage X 4.6 RTR, Savage XL Flux. Trophy’s Bullet’s Vorza WR8 Manufacturing in Taiwan is still a work in progress. Unfortunately, the cars manufactured in Taiwan have been affected by a supply chain issue. These issues are largely down to the closures of sub suppliers or external manufacturers, which are circumstances outside of HPI’s control. We are in the process of trying to re-establish supply from alternative manufacturers where possible but this will probably just for spare parts supply right now. Not RTR cars. A major RC factory in Taiwan closed down in the wake of Hobbico’s financial collapse. Leaving a lot of tooling missing and financial problems all down that factories supply chain. It is a very complicated picture HPI Racing has been trying to solve/work around for a long time. We are now classing chassis made in Taiwan as On Hold. We will re-release them, resource them or discontinue them on a chassis by chassis, spare part by spare part basis as and when its future becomes clear. We are still hopeful we can bring the majority of these items back to market. Car families currently On Hold from Taiwan: Baja, Blitz, Firestorm, RS4 Nitro 3, Sprint 2. For the Savage, It will depend on which version of the car. If they are standard items from the Savage X 4.6 RTR or the Savage Flux XL then these are in production at “HPIM” and will flow through our network as normal. Many older standard items and optional parts are discontinued or will be hard to get hold of still, as they were also made in Taiwan. The Savage 5.9’s will be a mixed bag because anything that is standard on the current Savage X 4.6 will be available as normal however anything unique will be difficult to find as it was made in Taiwan. The sintered differential parts you enquired about, we have had several batches of stock but are currently sold out. We hopefully also have a new third option on the way for the Crown gear and Pinion that came about from our extensive search for alternatives, these we will be looking to announce shortly. We have been shipping from HPIM to our Distributors and Central warehouse frequently since October 2019. Several shipments of spares and kits have been delivered between then and now with more on the way every month. Parts supply has been much improved for cars in our normal production schedule. The www.hpiracing.com website is the best resource for our up to the minute catalogue. Each parts webpage will say if the item is discontinued or not. We are updating this all the time. Licencing: All of HPI Racing's Licencing agreements are being renegotiated and renewed because of the change of ownership. Until we have that particular brands licence signed and sealed we cannot restart production of that product. This effects mainly body production but also some chassis production that has a licenced bodyshell on it. Some are signed and sealed, others will come back on board later, but some are definitely not. Nissan, Ford and Subaru are back on board and we hope for others to follow shortly. The Team in the UK, is now focused around a small but dedicated group of staff that will cover all Sales, Purchasing, Marketing, Social Media, Graphics, Artwork, Videos, Website content, Range and Production management and Product development and sourcing. Distributor Network: We do not sell directly but use a large Distributor network, please check with your regions Distributor for full local retailer and stock information. You can find details of all the Distributors we are shipping to currently signed on here: www.hpiracing.com/distributors If they do not currently have stock then it is worth contacting them to make sure they have the items on order for you from there next delivery bearing in mind the restrictions I mentioned above. We are currently setting up the website to show all the retailers that have access to HPI Racing product. Our domestic region and the retailers that our Distributors have supplied details for, are listed on our shop search section of our website. www.hpiracing.com/shops If your local retailer isn't registered with them ask them to get in touch with their local Distributor. I hope this helps show we are working very hard to push HPI Racing forwards. We are building a future for HPI Racing. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience and thank you for your understanding.
  19. Primary aim and the parts I'm struggling with right now (in the UK) is the machined BP diffs. To which end I contacted HPI directly to moan about lack of parts and had a lengthy response about their current position with post takeover blues. Long story short, they are making the machined diffs again and apparently about to release something new which is interesting: Key section of their reply: The Machined Bulletproof differentials are an item that was affected by the factory closure in Taiwan. It has taken us much longer than we would have liked, but we have found an alternative supplier that can provide these at a quality we expect from a HPI Racing product. A large batch is due to hit the warehouse in August. We hopefully also have a new third option on the way for the Crown gear and Pinion that came about from our extensive search for alternatives, these we will be looking to announce shortly. As most people reading this will have an interest in the Savage this is Interesting news for sure.
  20. So after a week of questions around forums, sourcing parts and spending way too much money on little pieces of plastic and alloy I have got enough parts together to at least make a start on the rebuild of my old Savage 25. The original 25 was put away 13/14 years ago and left in a cupboard in the garage - it was never meant to be put away for so long but that's life I guess. Two kids later - its time to try and get them interested which is where the inspiration for this build came from. 3 weeks ago I had no thoughts of ever returning to RC! The plan is to rebuild the 25 - basically upgrading everything to XL spec, extended chassis, upgraded transmission components - diffs etc. suspension, .32 engine and more. Most of the major parts have been sourced off the markets but a new suite of bearings, o-rings, shell and various other parts are being installed new. There will be some self made mods in the build - nothing too great, don't have the tooling to push any boundaries. I will need to make a mount for an Arrma wheelie bar, maybe a rear spoiler and I need to flush mount a LiPo cut off switch in the radio box. I will build this out with the stock .25 before replacing with a .32, I want to make sure I can get a solid Savage put together before smashing a high power nitro in there and going through tuning - chassis etc. first get it right then drop the new engine in. I still don't know if the .25 will fire - it looks clean but not got that far yet so it may be straight in with a new .32 - time will tell! This is what I'm starting with: A few bits have arrived, enough to make a start on improving the look of the chassis and installing the cut off switch in the new radio box. Apologies for picture quality - these first images are off a Honor 8 Pro in poor lighting but will have to do until I reclaim the garage from the spiders! The TVP's were purchased off E-Bay and while straight were a little scuffed but for £30 delivered they are as expected: Pic isn't great but too late to get another! I found a carbon fiber vinyl sheet in the loft leftover from an old PC build, the 3M adhesive was still good so thought I would see how it looked. Just enough to cover one side of each TVP plate: An hours work and to be honest the finish looked pretty good. I've no idea how long it will last but decided to get another sheet off Amazon for a few quid and finish the other sides as well. As its not permanent, its not much effort to pull the TVP plates off and replace etc. Certainly looks better than they arrived. The edges were finished off with an oil based 'paint pen' inside all of the cut outs and main frame edges. Finished TVP's The TVP's will be replaced if the 'right' ones come up for sale on marketplaces - for now they will do just fine and allow me to get the rest of the build started. Received a large delivery from Wheelspin this morning with loads of bits (will post up the collection tomorrow) including the new radio box (XL) and the receiver cut off switch. The switch has a LiPo mode which cuts power once the source voltage drops below 6V preventing damage to the battery: Set to work with a craft knife and file to make a cut out for the switch in the space preset for the HPI battery meter. Ended up with this: I measured the space for the 2500mah LiPo on my old Savage radio box. I am very fortunate but the new battery JUST fits in the XL unit - Its a 1mm either way and it would not! : That's it for today's progress - Have tomorrow and Friday booked off work to clear out the garage and deal with a leak in the roof. I want to reclaim my 'workshop' from the spiders - it is infested... I am prepared with a spider nuke bomb or two... The misses won't put up with this on the dining table for much longer so I have to get it done and move in there. Also makes it much easier to hide deliveries - and there are so many coming at the moment she won't believe the 'yeah only cost a fiver' for so long... So it will be the weekend before this continues, hopefully in the garage and by which time the last remaining parts should be here. Thanks for reading! MooGoCow!

  23. Looks like my old roto start hasn't survived house moves, nowhere to be found. Need to find a shaft to drill start. Anybody got an old one knocking about? Need to get my old .25 started. Thanks Sent from my DUK-L09 using Tapatalk
  24. Am upgrading my old original Savage 25 with an XL chassis, .32 LRP Engine. Am looking for parts to update the drive train to hardened stuff but am particularly looking for: 29/9T Sintered or Machined BP Bevel Gears - https://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/105551 HPI Part #105551 or https://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/102692 HPI Part#102692 Alloy Diff Cases or even Complete Diffs considered if going cheap!! - This is the diff case https://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/86827 HPI Part#86827 Heavy Duty Diff Shafts x 4 - https://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/86248 HPI Part#86248 Heavy Duty Drive Shafts x 4 (11mm x 123mm) - https://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/86246 HPI Part#86246 Heavy Duty Cup Joint x 2 - https://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/86276 HPI Part#86276 Lost the lid to the radio box so could do with either a new lid or complete unit (minus radio gear). Added: Upgraded to 17mm Hex hubs so any decent wheel sets considered too! New, if I can source are expensive so seeing whats out there on the market or in your old toolboxes! If I can't do this at a reasonable cost I'll probably just bite the bullet and move on to something newer. I know a lot of people have moved on from the Savage so hoping there might be some old bits gathering dust available, still have affection for this old boat. I already have the updated bulkheads for easy diff access/updated 17mm axles and chassis stuff already covered so its really just transmission bits - although any other upgrades over stock 25 will certainly be considered. Appreciate any assistance! Cheers! Moo
