  1. My Savage is a heavy old beast and I bash it hard. I've never broken a single shock tower. That said, I have braced my shock towers using Hyper 7 upper suspension arms going from the top of the towers to the TVPs.

I agree on the Alza bulkhead braces though. Essential upgrade of you're going to bash your Savage anything like 'enthusiastically'.

  2. Mine started out as a bog standard 3.5 too. Too many upgrades to list later, and this is how she stands now:

Sure, it's a bit of a 'Trigger's brush' in that there's not really anything of the original truck left, but it's a good illustration Nitroholic's excellent point about Savages, they are such a blank canvas that you can go anywhere with them!

Here's my thread documenting the evolution of mine: http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/topic/142158-the-evolution-of-drexels-savage/

  3. I've never understood people's obsession with the top speed figure. It's just a number. If your truck is running right and it feels fast enough for you, then it is fast enough, the actual figure is irrelevant.

  4. As said, an all alloy Savage would be useless at anything other than looking 'pretty' sat on a shelf.

Diff upgrades should be your first point of call.

Thicker TVPs from the likes of Innovative-RC or Alza Racing are a worthwhile upgrade, not only do they add strength, but they improve the way I'd drives because they lower the centre of gravity. Another weakness that is worth addressing is the bulkhead braces, they are prone to snapping after heavy one-sided impacts, and often take the bulkheads with them. Alza Racing bulkhead braces completely solve this problem.

Alloy does have it's place, but only if you use decent manufacturers and use it where it actually has real benefits (like the above mentioned bulkhead braces) and not just to look shiny.

Savage X A-arms are more than up to the job, my truck is heavy and I'm yet to break one. If you have the old style arms, an upgrade to the Savage X ones are very worthwhile.

With a mixture of Alza and IRC upgrades my Savage is pretty nuke proof now, but there's no need to go that far, just upgrade to Savage X spec whenever you break things and enjoy it!

  5. Testing went well, a little too quick off the mark considering I've got punch down on one! I'll live with it.

The LVC is bothering me. I've got an Ezrun 150 Amp Pro ESC that's set to 3.2 volts per cell to achieve a perfect 3.4 volt cut-off, I've also got two Xerun ESCs that I've had to set to 3.0 volts per cell to achieve a perfect 3.4 volt cut-off, but this one was cutting really early, so down it went to 2.8 volts per cell. Still it cut early, so it's now set to its lowest LVC of 2.6 volts per cell! That seems to be OK, the alarm didn't go off and that's set to 3.2 volts per cell. I then charged the cells back up to 20% to go and test again, but a grub screw decided that red threadlock wasn't man enough to hold it in and backed out. I'll let the threadlock cure over night and hopefully test again tomorrow.

I've half a mind to ask for another one as that is some seriously poor calibrating! I suppose if it works, I might as well live with it. Any thoughts on that?

That's all for now, hopefully testing will resume tomorrow.

My EZRUN is exactly the same. Cuts way too early.

  6. Surely Muggy boots are no different to MT boots?

They're basically oversized truggy boots (pin style) on oversized dish wheels, with a low profile. Just like a normal truggy wheel/tyre combo, but bigger. They aren't as heavy as a proper MT combo.
