  1. Anyone gone down the 'converting a computer PSU' route for a benchtop power supply? I hear they can be a cheap alternative if you're competent at soldering and often supply up to 30A or more!

Yes I have, followed these instructions: Clicky. Works great!! :D I'm not the best solderer in the world or have an indepth knowledge of electronics, but mines been going strong for 6 months. Give it a try!

  2. Had a good run with my lipo pack in the park, and I want to be able to check whats left in it, so I can start to get a feel for how long I can run before hitting the voltage limits. I have an Ansmann xbase deluxe which gives me all kinds of volts/mah while charging, but doens't seem to give me any readings if I just hook the battery up.

is there something (cheap) that'll let me do that? and for lipos/NiMh if possible

I use the Fusion smart guard to check capacity of lipo's works pretty well, gives a percentge left rather than actual mAh:

    http://store.modelpower.co.uk/fusion-smart...ecker-103-p.asp

  3. ive fixed my dumped lipo's through a balance charge at a slightly higher amp's that usual. ( i usually charge at 3.2 and would do 4.0 on balance if they were like you described ( very slow and sluggish ) if this happens in a lipo you should really stop immedietly to prevent damage.

this trick has worked for me about 3 times. twice on my demon 3600's and once last week on my trakpower 3200's.

hope this helps and can get them running again because your running it in my favourite RC of all time

Thanks very much for this, my charger only goes to 5A and they are 5000mAh batts, so have borrowed a charger which goes to 6A so will give it a go at charging at 6A.

You're right about being your fav truck - it's insane - can't imagine what it's like using 6s cells!!

    Cheers mate, will report back!

  4. Grateful for some views please?

I bought two second hand 7.4v Nosram vtec Extreme Power Lipos from ebay They said they had only 20 cycles through them and were always balance charged.

When I had them, I checked their capacity using a fusion smart guard and they were both at 86 percent. So I thought I'd top them up before using them in my ERBE. The one went up to about 90 prcent but the other one refused to go above 86 percent on my charger (Core UDC20).

So I tried them in my ERBE and there was just no punch at all and was going about a 1/4 of the speed (at the most). I wasn't happy and thought I'd try one of my normal sets of batts to check all was ok with the truck. Using my 7.4v Trakpower's it it was back to what I'd expect - Wheelies and full speed!!

Anyone any ideas what may be up with the Lipo's?

    Thanks.

  5. Brushless motors have a huge draw on them even when working correctly. You could use a multmeter on the batter and check its polarity is ok as well as its output. it may be worth adding a capicitor to your esc's this reduces the initial jolt to your battery as well as protecting the compnents incase of surge.

Please let me kjnow how your cutomer experience gets on as its always good to know how others are treated when they have problems.

Right, time for an update on this. Despite initial reservations from Hobbytoys88 on taking responsibility for sorting out my smoked ESC, they tried to say I should have used a bigger fan!?! I pointed out that in 10 metres, it couldn't have been fan that was the problem and I was only using 6 cell NiMhs. I also poined out that Hobbywing recommend only changing to a 12v fan for 7 cell or 3s Lipos.

As a result, they said they would look at reparing it (not replacing it), so just a heads up, they say the EZRun systems don't have any kind of warranty when supplied by Hobbytoys88. In terms of cost, I had to pay for the postage to send it back to China (

  6. I know there are some recent topics on the EZrun, but thought I'd share a recent experience with others who are considering purchasing the brushless system.

Ordered 3 x eZrun systems for each of my cars. Went for the 10T 35A versions and ordered them from Hobbytoys88 from ebay.

First off, very impressed with the delivery, they arrived in 6 days from Hong Kong.

Tried out the first one in my TT-01. It went for about 5 seconds, then stopped, luckily had the shell off as smoke started bellowing out of the ESC, so thought that didn't look good and switched it off straight away. I touched the battery (a 3700mAh GP NiMH pack) and I couldn't even keep my finger on it for a second it was absolutely red hot.

Unfortunately the eZrun system is completely dead. Does anyone have any ideas what could have gone wrong? Faulty ESC, problem with the battery?

Am pleased to report, that the other 2 eZruns are perfect and am very pleased with them. Athough I haven't used that 3700 pack with them!!

I have emailed Hobbytoys, asking for a replacement, I'll post up my customer aftersales service experience if I get a response.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Cheers.

  7. Hi, grateful for some advice re the above ESC please?

Been bashing with my new TT-01 which I've had for a couple of weeks today. I bought it wihout an ESC so I could fit the Viper. I also insalled a 17x2 Turn LSP Fusion 3 motor and am running with a 58 spur and 22 pinion gearing setup.

It's been great, but suddenly today, I slammed the brakes on, then I had no response from the throttle. As the steering sevo was working I thought the ESC had just shut itself down to cool down. Upon feeling the heatsink on the motor it wasn't that hot at all. I left it for five mins and hoped it would start again. I waited with aniticipation and Hooray it did! But now the ESC won't engage reverse, it brakes but no reverse.

I re-did the setup process for the viper, just to check that the ESC's reverse didn't go into disabled mode for some reason. But it's definately in .5 seconds delay before reverse mode with 60% braking.

    Any ideas anyone please?

    Thanks!

  8. Hello mate :)

Your servo needs adjusting......remove the fitting off the steering servo and turn your radio gear on and set the steering trim to the centre and put the servo fitting on as straight/level as you can.

    This will sort it! ^_^

Thanks 53HRA, adjusted it as you said, now runs perfectly straight at max speed. Thanks very much for the advice!!!! :D

  9. Hello mate :)

Thanks very much for such a quick response! Will try doing that.

    Cheers mate!

  10. Hi, grateful if someone can help a noob out please. Took my new TT-01 out today for the first time.

Have replaced the stock ESC with a M-Tronics viper RV15, replaced stoc motor with an LRP 17x2 Fusion 3 motor and am using a 22/58 gear set up.

Am delighted with the speed of it - very quick (for me anyway!) But at full throttle, the car veers off the the right, I've played about with the trims but doesn't help. When I go slow, however, it runs pretty straight - Am using the slick tyres that came with the kit. Is the steering problem just due to the power of the motor ??

    Grateful for some advice please!!

    Cheers.

  11. Hi, I've bought an LRP Fusion 3 17x2 motor for my new TT-01. The instructions say that it's fitted with the All round Brushes (part 65921) the same as the LRP V10 Spec 4 motors sold by modelsport.

Grateful for some advice on which alternative replacement brushes to get, such as the ones on offer by Modelsport? I can't seem to source the All round brushes anywhere in the UK?

    Many thanks!!

  12. I wonder if someone can clarify this for me please? Just about to get a new TT-01. I thought I had gearing sussed, until I read two posts which say similar things but seem to contradict each other in terms of high /low FDR's for stock and faster motors.

The one from the first post on the "TT-01 essential upgrades" pinned topic says:

"In general, when you fit a faster motor, you fit a lower FDR. Fit a slower motor and you need a higher FDR. That doesn't take into account the space you've got to run the car in, so smaller areas mean a lower FDR as you're not going to be able to reach the top speed with a high FDR, so its always a balance of top speed and acceleration that match the motor and the area."

However, the one from the pinned topic on "Confused about gearing" (again 1st post) says:

"In general, when you fit a faster motor, you fit a higher FDR. Fit a slower motor and you need a low FDR. That doesn't take into account the space you've got to run the car in, so smaller areas mean a lower FDR as you're not going to be able to reach the top speed with a high FDR, so its always a balance of top speed and acceleration that match the motor and the area. For touring cars at least, FDR's of 7.5 or above are considered high."

I'm getting a 17 turn modified motor, so would really appreciate if someone could clarify whether it's best to go for low or high FDR's for the best speed please?

    Cheers, and thanks.

  13. iv had nimh batteries unused for over a year without a charge before and they have been fine. however the cold is a bugger. when airsofting in minus 3 iv had batteries just die in minutes after a full charge, also as garry said things run slower on cold batteries.

    adam

Thanks for clearing up - love the use it more so no need to worry method!

    Will store at room temperature.

    Thanks guys!

  14. Just to add to what Garry says, NiMh's & the cold don't mix well, cold air tends to knock hell out of them so the best thing to do is store them at room temperature if you can rather than leaving them locked away in a drafty garden shed or the garage out in the cold winter air.

Hi there, I am a total newbie to RC (But loving the hobby!) but now I'm confused. I thought it was better to store NiMh batteries at a cooler temperature, I've read that you should keep them in the fridge if not using them for a long period of time, some advise to even keep in the freezer!?

Grateful if someone could clarify and provide a definitive answer?

Apologies for muddying waters or contradicting your helpful advice mad-wolfe.

  15. Thanks very much for this brilliant advice Garry - joined this forum today after ordering my first RC car from Modelsport UK earlier in the month (A Gravel Hound). Been trying to get my head around gearing for a week - This info and link to the gearchart website is invaluable - Understand it completely now! A must for all newbies like myself.

Thanks again and congratulations on what I consider to be the best RC forum on the web!
