...another Savage post!
Hi
Just got a Savage 4.6, which I had an awesome time building (apart from a panic involving threadlock and putting the funny shaped nut the clutch fits onto on the wrong way round), and I'm now just finishing off the break in process. Just got a few queries about it really, and whether stuff is worth buying.
Suspension - I've just ordered some 35w silicon oil to replace the standard stuff, as its a bit too soggy for my liking and has a habit of cocking a back wheel, or just giving up entirely and falling over! I've seen some anti-roll bar kits for it, which look quite interesting, but are they any good? How much would they affect handling on the rough stuff? I'm after a kind of jack of all trades really (awkward I know) that can handle rough stuff and big jumps, without turning into a quivering wreck on tarmac. Also I'm intending on trying out some skateparks, and obviously these tend to be quite high grip surfaces, but with big air potential. Any suggestions. Oh, and I've also just ordered the aluminium adjustable upper arms, as mine are nearly fully adjusted inwards and my wheels are still a little \ / as opposed to the / \ I would prefer them to be. In fact the whole camber angle seems to adjust all the time. Is this just monster trucks? (My other cars a Schumacher Fusion, which is a completely different beast!)
Engine - Still taking it a little bit gently with this. Seems a bit rough to me, but its still breaking in, and i've not got it dialled in right yet. No wheelies, and no 2nd gear yet, but its getting there. I'm slightly concerned about overheating, so i've just ordered a temp gun, as from what i've heard anything over 300F is bad news? I'm still getting plenty of smoke, and i've just ordered F3, F4 and F5 Model Technics plugs, so I can experiment with cold to med plugs as the depending on the weather, and see if this improves performance at all. The cooling head is hot too the touch, you can touch it but you wouldn't want to hang on for too long, although its a damn sight cooler than the exhaust, which melted my shell today (Grr) as I had it too far from the chassis, but you live and learn.
Oh, and why do you start the engine with the plug loose, and then tighten it once its going? Heard a few people talk about it, but what purpose does it serve? Just to lower compression to make starting it a bit easier? Is it necessary?
Sorry its a bit long winded, and anyone who takes the time to read and answer, I salute you, but as I'm new to the Monster truck scene, I'm trying to pick up as much as I can as soon as possible.
Thanks
Ol
